Port's fucking awesome aside from the overflow shit and Inbachi just being pants-on-head retarded.
360 Mode is fuckwin. Managing one resource bar and constantly being on the edge of a game over is such a rush even on "boring" Shot/Novice difficulty. This is easily the best part of the game for me. The TLB/TTLB aren't nearly as difficult as the "main" game mode(s), but everything else is the same... and since you're going to be jacking rank way the hell up to score instead of saving your hypers like in 1.0... yeah. Fun times.
1.5 fixes all the shit wrong with 1.0. Yeah, the Deathsmiles recharging shit is lame, but it feels much less strict than DS to me. Also, it's pretty cut-and-dry where the recharge points are in stage 5. Still better than laser wheels.
Best novice mode in a game ever. I can understand where players like Icarus think novice modes are no fun and so on, but for people like me? Fucking love it. Novice S/L > Novice EX > Regular game is actually a solid progression for once unlike, say, Futari where 1.5 Original Stage 2 is more difficult than all of Novice Ultra.
1.0? Yeah, 1.0 isn't really all that great: hypers take too long to charge and are pretty much pointless because loloverflow.
Aesthetically? I love this fucking game. I don't really get how stages look the same: city, forest/suburbs, canal, canyon, factory, and then weird trippy shit for the last boss(es). I thoroughly enjoy the bullets and the patterns. I love the smooth texture of everything. And I'll be DAMNED if the stage 4 midboss isn't a Protoss Carrier complete with Interceptors (in 360 mode, the drones circling it all have their own health bars). The music clicks with me, and I enjoy listening to the OST as well as the Arrange.
tl;dr - Different strokes for different folks. Everyone has different tastes. If you don't like the game, don't play it and stop trying to get people to validate your "meh" feelings. If you do like it, then play it.

Holy shit, it DOES look like a Carrier. I never noticed that before, but wow. the shape really is a lot like it. And it has one phase where it even fires drone ships at you!CptRansom wrote:And I'll be DAMNED if the stage 4 midboss isn't a Protoss Carrier complete with Interceptors (in 360 mode, the drones circling it all have their own health bars).

People refusing to play the superior game modes just because they weren't in the arcades, and not having fun as a result?

What, you do? Why didn't you say so before, we could have literally spent joyful hours hating on that game together!Icarus wrote: Played ver1.5 for an hour and a half yesterday.
The system is now less Dodonpachi and more Deathsmiles, which is especially irritating as I hate Deathsmiles.

I'll earmark the discussion for our next meet up.
As for the rest of you taking this thread FAR too seriously:
I appreciate some of you may not have been members here for the DFK release, and therefore won't remember the accompanying thread of infamy on which this is based. I'm surprised it even went over Chempop's head, since it's the first line in the OP:Giest118 wrote:People refusing to play the superior game modes just because they weren't in the arcades, and not having fun as a result?
Anyway, we know PCB/Arcade HD has flaws, so if there's something that irks you about the game/package/aesthetics/content decisions etc etc, this is a thread to let it all out.Skykid wrote:I had to do it, for tradition.

I definitely felt the Daifukkatsu meh. I'm not giving up on Saidaioujou yet. I think it might need some time to simmer. It does look really weird though.

If that's the case, then I don't understand why you made the comment you did.chempop wrote:It didn't go over my head, I suspected it was coming eventually

Anyway, my contributions to this thread end here. Just played another couple of hours and I'm now officially seduced! So to clarify what I find 'meh':
- Arcade original is good, but not as good as 1.5
- The overflow bug being turned off has no scoring leaderboard
- The graphical style is a little garish and there's not a great deal of background variety
- The smoothing option is on by default: stupidity
- The ship after image is set by default and requires a shop purchase to remove (I think): stupidity
- There are a few small bugs that need a patching service (like the sound), which I really would have preferred to be sorted when the disc went to print.
Everything else is just absolutely beautiful, but I've gotta post about that in the main SDOJ thread with haste!

You mean the blue shadow thing when you laser? That is in every single DDP game as far as I remember, so why would you expect them to have it off by default? Unless you mean something different.Skykid wrote:The ship after image is set by default and requires a shop purchase to remove (I think): stupidity
Re: Anyone else feeling the Saidaioujou meh?
It must be me then. For some reason it seems really prominent in this one: a very dark and very long afterimage that trails about after your ship. Guess I just never noticed it in the other Pachi's.ptoing wrote:You mean the blue shadow thing when you laser? Re: Anyone else feeling the Saidaioujou meh?
It is not super in your face in DDP or DOJ, but it is there, and it flickers, because no real transparency and all that. But I guess it is possible to overlook things like that, people have overlooked more obvious things and I am not really surprised anymore when people tell me they did not notice some graphical detail in a game I notices. Afterall I am a pixelartist, and I notice everything!!!!!! Like that they forgot to upres the lowest bit of the DFK midboss in stage 5 after the laserwheels. Oh wells.

Re: Anyone else feeling the Saidaioujou meh?
It's also in ESP.Ra.De when you're holding down the shot button in slowmode. In the early Pachi games and ESP.Ra.De it was a blue shadow, it's much more of a black in SDOJ.Skykid wrote:It must be me then. In any case, as soon as "Carrier has arrived" on stage 4, I lose all my lives very quickly. Fucking bastard that guy is.
Re: Anyone else feeling the Saidaioujou meh?
I don't like it either, however I didn't like it when I played the PCB. Also I didn't get along with DOJ at first, but I know which is the better game.
When I first played DFK, it felt really nice and special, until I'd get to 1-5 on the first life and end it with 1 life left.

Re: Anyone else feeling the Saidaioujou meh?
It's amazing how they managed to take the game's most unique idea and make it utterly sucktastic.
Re: Anyone else feeling the Saidaioujou meh?
Yeah, I actually really like the enemies having lasers as well. Blocking lasers with your laser attack is fun. The main fault tho is laser wheels not being destructible (Arrange A, I know, I know), and the bit of stage 5 with the wheels being all winding and doing weird loops, and basically depending on memorisation more than anything to get through unscathed. Bleh.
Re: Anyone else feeling the Saidaioujou meh?
It's a lot easier in Black Label too though, since you can cancel hypers for two large invincibility periods for one hyper and there's a lot of bees near the wheels.
