I don't always blow hundreds of pounds on a game, but when I do, Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru. As an aficionado of Japanese sidescrolling action I rate it among the finest. Arcade-paced, technically airtight, consistently creative and stylishly violent (
Scanner Ninja Taromaru), with a thoroughly dark folk-horror atmosphere. And it has a great against-all-odds development story too. Only problem is the bland cover art, but I consider that a reminder of how lucky it was this game got released at all. The full-colour disc looks rad, at least. Will have played the equivalent cost in "credits" before long.
Wasn't a leap of faith by any means, though. When buying games of any cost, I am like Liam Neeson at the beginning of Taken analysing and vetting that karaoke machine he's considering getting for his daughter. I dispose of the lacking ones as ruthlessly as he does Albanian sex slavers later in the film, too!
