Then there's an elephant in the room of the lag question.

I don't know, otherwise I would have addressed it. All I know is that PS3 games have no lag, and neither does the old hardware-based PS2 BC for 480p games.
I haven't heard anything about PS2 Classics having lag but I haven't seen any scientific data. Maybe someone here has the necessary equipment to test it.

I saw this a few mins ago, but I can't buy it right now (I just bought CvS2 and I have 800 yen change).

Can anyone recommend a shooter off JP PSN <= 800 yen?

Don't care if it's PC Engine, PS1, PS2 or PS3 as long as it's good and lag isn't an issue.

Well, all PS1 games appear to have 40ms of lag on PS3, so it very much depends on how much lag your TV set adds to this. I often use a CRT TV to play PS1/PS2 on my PS3, so it's not a problem for me.

Confirmed as a direct emulation of the PS2 version, because some video of it did turn up eventually and the game looks exactly like on the PS2, can be played without any hitches on a PS3 now at least.
Still I wouldn't have minded an enhanced edition like the incoming Ketsui Extra PS3 release... not at all...
