Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
So this almost passed me by until I saw it on newStage http://www.jp.playstation.com/software/ ... 00000.html
Can anyone shed some light on what "PlayStation ® 2 Archives" is? Are games on there more than just bare minimum emulations? Is this region free?

Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
That's cool to hear of Psyvariar CE available to d/l on the PS3...definitely new news to me. Before Success released their PS2 port of Psyvariar CE, I asked them via e-mail, how many versions were going to be made available. They wrote back and said that three different versions would be available on day one of release including:
the standalone Psy-CE set -- a single PS2 game disc with both Psyvariar Medium Unit & Psyvariar Revision games on it.
Psyvariar Sound Box set -- came with a OST music CD
Psyvariar Capture Box set -- came with a Reverse Babel Psyvariar Vol. 1 Appreciate DVD superplay (that was encoded as a Japanese Region 2 DVD). I chose the 3rd option and was a happy man watching it...eventually came across the golden opportunity to buy the original Taito G-Cards of both Psyvariar Medium Unit and Psyvariar Revision running on the slick Taito G-Net arcade platform...ace shmups all the way whether it be on the original arcade platform or the JPN PS2 console.
Later on, Success Corp. would re-release both Psy-MU & Psy-R as seperate JPN PS2 game disc releases to cash in on the Psyvariar franchise.

Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
My guess is if you create yourself a JAP PSN account you will be able to buy and download it, just like with titles as Donpachi or DoDonpachi.

Not to mention buying some JPN PSN points to make the purchase(s) as well. Without them, it's no dice.

Welcome are these tidings.
They really need to release Psyvariar 2 in HD on XBLA/PSN. It would be beautiful.

I think japan needs to realize that they could make tons more money if they didn't region lock every damn thing. No need to release it globally, its not like the rest of the world wants to play your games or anything...

Seems like PS3's "shmup hope" is getting better lately, first the release of Ketsui and then this.

I would much rather they up-rez Complete first, they can do the second one after they rebalance everything because honestly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWx5bsTz ... e=youtu.beWeak Boson wrote:Welcome are these tidings.

Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
I agree that they're the better games. What annoys me about 2 is how fast the bullets are - a lot of the fun in Revision was making sure you cling to clusters of bullets as long as possible but in 2 you just buzz them once and then they're gone. I've not played it extensively but it seems there's a lot less room for different strategies and optimization.ciox wrote:I would much rather they up-rez Complete first, they can do the second one after they rebalance everything because honestly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWx5bsTz ... e=youtu.be
But even so it looks good and has a unique mechanic - there used to be frothing demand for that kind of thing. The ideal scenario would be a HD triple pack where people come for Psyvariar 2 prettiness and stay for how perfect Revision is. But presumably that's even further out the window now they're releasing Complete Edition on PSN.

It's been awhile since I created my JP PSN account, but if you Google around it shouldn't be hard to find an explanation, the process isn't very complicated. Someone else will have to suggest where to go for JP PSN points, though...then again you could probably search those out pretty easily as well.shmuppyLove wrote:I need more info about this, does someone have a guide?

Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
Do they suffer from the same lag issues that the PS1 games suffer from?
Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
Well I followed one of those YouTube tutorials for creating a JAP account on the PSN, but check this one, it will be just as useful:shmuppyLove wrote:I need more info about this, does someone have a guide?d3vak wrote:My guess is if you create yourself a JAP PSN account you will be able to buy and download it, just like with titles as Donpachi or DoDonpachi.

What I did to find DonPachi and DoDonPachi was (lols at me) to use this website: http://www.whiteagle.net/ in order to translate the name of the games into "Katakana", because the JAP PSN virtual keyboard has those characters on it. For example, type in "dodonpachi" and you will get this shit: "ドドンパチ" thus, type that on the PSN and voilà!
**Edit**
Oh! I forgot the most important thing...you can get JAP PSN cards here: http://www.play-asia.com/paOScore/19-71 ... 5-psn.html
Hope this can help you!

Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
To be brutally honest, I wouldn't bother if I were you. (For the PS1 stuff.)
The games just feel and look wrong on a PS3 connected up to an HDTV. Whether that's down to the aforementioned lag or the fact that some of them force you to use the godawful excuse of a D-Pad that the playstation brand still uses (if the original game didn't let you use the analogue, then it won't here either) is debatable, but still largely an irrelevancy (they just feel shit - okay?)
DoDonpachi is one of those games. It is truly a thing of purest awful trying to move that ship around using that D-Pad. It might be great for selecting which stupid spell your FF character is about to cast, or tap-tap-tapping out a digital corner in the first Gran Turismo, but man, is it ever absolutely fucking useless for shmups (and don't even get me started on how inadequate it is for fighters.)
On the other hand: Zanac X.

PS3 isn't likely to emulate PS2 at full speed. Porting, on the other hand, seems likely.ciox wrote:Can anyone shed some light on what "PlayStation ® 2 Archives" is? Are games on there more than just bare minimum emulations?
If PSP could handle ports of The Red Star and Power Stone Collection handsomely, Psyvariar Complete Edition PS3 port should be a piece of cake.

Ah, sounds good, there's a chance of improved rendering then. The game's always had many high-poly 3d models, just bad low-res rendering of them.Obiwanshinobi wrote:PS3 isn't likely to emulate PS2 at full speed. Would be interesting if someone with an original disc and a JPN PS3 could compare this download release with the disc release (both on a JPN PS3).

PS3 emulates PS2 at full speed with all bells and whistles. "PS2 Archives" are basically just dumps of PS2 games, not ports.Obiwanshinobi wrote:PS3 isn't likely to emulate PS2 at full speed. Porting, on the other hand, seems likely.
Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
Older models don't even have to emulate, as all the PS2 hardware is present on the PCB.

I don't believe PS3 has no problem emulating PS2. PS2 hardware in early PS3 units must have been there for a reason.

Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
IIRC correctly, even the later models utilised some PS2 hardware, so even then it's not full emulation.

Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
The reason being the lack of a functioning software emulator at the time. Sony has since developed one. While inaccessible to OFW PS3 users beyond the limited selection offered by PS2 Archives, it can be used by CFW PS3 users to play whatever PS2 game they want, not just the ones offered on PSN. It`s by no means perfect and some titles don`t run at all, but the overall compatibility is very high with many games working flawlessly.Obiwanshinobi wrote:I don't believe PS3 has no problem emulating PS2. Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
As usual with Playstation-related information, Jonathan Ingram is right on the money. PS3 is indeed strong enough to fully emulate PS2 via software, which is how PSN PS2 games work. A couple of years after abandoning full and partial PS2 hardware emulation, Sony apparently perfected PS2 software emulation. Unfortunately for us they decided not to give this emulator away for free, but are instead selling PS2 games via PSN. This new form of PS2 emulation was actually hacked recently, and if you are lucky enough to own a PS3 with CFW you can make many PS2 games run on your PS3 now (some games don't work). This is similar to how you can run PS1 games on a hacked PSP.

Re: Psyvariar Complete Edition on PS3
Then there's an elephant in the room of the lag question. If Sony could develop a software emulator, but wouldn't deign to do something about it to this day, then PS3 has a problem with its mother of a company.
