Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the SNES: Why?

Post by dtdg »

Why? Why? Why?

Why did Capcom port this to the SNES? If I think about this question any more, my head will explode. My main issue with the game is constant loading. Why Capcom why? Was the Saturn or PS1 port of this game better than this.? Good god, this game is horrible. Never playing this again.

Well, why not? The not-yet-dead SNES still had perhaps the largest user base and SFA2 was still fairly hot at the time. Cruddy hardware but extra money is extra money.

Erm..

When this was released on SNES, I didn't know many people who had a Saturn or a PSX.

I can tell you I had a lot of good time with this game. No, its not as good as the 32 bits versions, but it was surely a lot of fun for SNES owners, and a pretty solid port.

To answer your question: Simply, to make money.

It is pointless to play in the modern day, though. Zero 2 Alpha's much better than alpha 2 due to the custom combo system.

It was not made by Capcom. Nintendo actually paid a license so they could publish it on their system. I think the game was a joke. But you should have seen the hype for it in the official Nintendo magazine in Mexico. It's run by idiot fanboys who drooled at the blurriness of the N64, and the "CD quality" sound of the SNES.

Morons. I'm glad I moved to the USA shortly after.

Erm SNES alpha came out after it came out on the PS.

I know that in theory it could've come out before the PS, but I don't think it did. Prove me wrong and I'll smile.

Also describe the loading on the SNES, because that IS the funniest shit ever, loading on a cartridge...?
I have heard mentions of this before and we should give Capcom credit for making a cartrdige which loads

Aero Blaster/Air Buster for MD/Genesis has loading times. It's rather odd... you get to look at a screen of the 5 main characters for about 5 seconds before each level.

One should make a clear distinction between loading and time needed for decompression to avoid misunderstanding.

CD/DVD games have loading times and may also need time to do decompression. In the case of carts we are talking about decompression only.

In the case of SFA 2 the S-DD1 compression. And in this case the compression is understandable and reasonable.

Air Buster indeed has a delay, but I really doubt it is there because of decompression as it is only 340kb big. I think it is merely questionable presentation.

Hell....I own it on the SNES. Bought it from Wally-World for cheap a looooong time ago. It's fun by itself, but if you compare it to any other version, it falters. It was fun back in the day, however.

If someone has ever played Batman Forever on the SNES, that cart has loading times comparable to those of the Sega CD. I know, decompression. But that only makes it stink even worse.

I know the SNES version came after the Saturn and PSX ones.

But I had a close friend who owned an SNES, and neither me or he had either a PSX or a Saturn.

So the SNES version was lots of fun for us.

Pfft, I've played SFA2 on SNES before and remember the stupid "decompression" time. More like lazy coding. Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia use the same kind of compression and they don't load like crazy. SO and TP even have a fair amount of voices.

Yeah, I think the poor quality music was worse than the loading, though. It pains me to listen to poor midi quality versions of some of the best tunes in the SFA series. The port wasn't too bad, but it pales in comparison to other versions of SFA2.

Yeah I agree, the poor quality music was by far the worst part of the game for me. But I mean c'mon guys, for the SNES the port of this game wasn't half bad. Yeah so there was loading just before and after a round (about 4-5 seconds), and ALOT of missing frames but other than that the port was alright. Not too bad a job at all I thought.

Actually I had a few fun hours with this game while my wallet was empty. Of course once I played the Real version (Saturn), there was no going back.
