It's still shit. Look at Akai Katana's artwork. That stuff is gorgeous, and that's "a comic"... Do note that these are from background pictures from the 360 port. As in, you will be seeing these deformed faces while you play unless you've tate'd your display.

That artist doesn't suffer from same face syndrome, some of those pics even have 2 on the same face.

Some weird expressions in the in-game Espgaluda 2 art, but overall Masaki Hirooka is an excellent artist, and his work in Order of Ecclesia is superb. Akai Katana's artist on the other hand is quite generic and I hate his coloring. I'd much rather have Hirooka than him.

Thanks for the translation, Blackoak!

Nice work Blackoak.

Those extra modes don't sound so bad. Also, from that interview it doesn't sound like Cave is shutting up shop anytime soon. I just hope they continue to make arcade games.

Edit: I'm no fan of espgaluda 2's artwork - the faces suck, but that cd cover is beautiful.

I cannot agree more. The art is technically perfect but it has a huge lack of personality. I'd even have prefered Esp 2 art over these.

Cave should make a game where they use Kawayoo as a character artist.

I'm ok with this :D. When was the last time CAVE used some angular and agressive art for their chars? I think something like this would fit more in a shmup than some moeblob waifu artstyle

Totally. Or someone like Naoki Saito or JNTHED. They would make much more interesting designs I am sure.

Range Murata is an oldie but a goodie, can't go wrong with Akiman (esp with his new style switch up for Shien the Wandered NDS), and Hiroaki Samura needs more VG tie-ins - would be epic.

Tony Taka did some beautiful stuff for the Shining Wind games, but I realise it would be all tits, ass and pussy if he was on board (at least his girls got curves though.)

Sadly I assume Cave either can't afford or are too cheap to hire any decent artists currently. They figure Zun draws total shit and gets away with it, so they can do the same.

I want a guro-shmup (Guwange 2?) with Samura's artwork. Is that too much to ask?

I'd pay good money for that.

I think he'd have to tone it down slightly from Hitodenashi no Koi though. That misogyny/war crime vibe might be pushing it a little for a mainstream shmup.

I'd love for Cave to team up with Yasushi Suzuki at some point and produce something stoic in the vein of Ikaruga or Sin & Punishment. Not to mention that due to his angular art style, I feel that Suzuki's stuff actually translates really well to polys (even low poly models of his stuff manage to retain the feeling of his art) if Cave felt inclined to try 3D again (although, perhaps they should talk to G.Rev about doing the modeling).

ZUNart shits all over every drawing principles but at least his work doesn't have the derivative look at all and the characters are usually well-dressed. I'd take that over SDOJ art any day.

Tony Taka is bad. He got some good grasp on anatomy but his faces and coloring are horrid. Just shove the SDOJ art into Photoshop, hit Desaturate and you've got Tony Taka.

Tony Taka's alright. I wouldn't say his faces are horrid, but all of them have the same face. I don't really mind his coloring.

He also did work on an STG, Valhellio. And indeed, it was all tits and ass.

Yeah, that's pretty much my complaint. My reaction to the first Tony pic was "that looks nice", but after the 7th time it became "lol what the fuck they're all the same". For the coloring I think it can benefit from a little more saturation.

Exaggeration ever. He's a far more accomplished artist than the SDOJ stuff, and saying "he got some good grasp on anatomy" is like saying Salma Hayek has an 'okayish' figure. There is same face syndrome there (Range Murata and shinkirou suffered the same problem), but considering we're facing an entire industry of derivative imagery, at least Taka has solid artistic principles backing up his gang of seductive heathens.

Care to list some of these solid artistic principles?

Calling his vixens "seductive" is utter hypocrisy. His sense of fashion is the same as that of Ryou Nagi. I am in no way defending the SDOJ guy as I've already made clear a while ago in this thread that I fucking hate him, but it is hilarious to irrationally favor one artist over another when they are undeniably the same shit.

Danbooru links.

Not necessarily swaying either way, but I'd just like to point out the main differences in the art style, which may or may not explain Skykid's view:

* Nagi's is a lot more 'angular', whereas Taka's is more 'curved'.
* Nagi's has a very 'hard' shading, whereas Taka's is more 'gentle'.

These are really just two parts of the same difference in style (hard vs. soft), but they're the most obvious, and are probably why one would choose between the two.

However, they are both quite 'recycled' in the sense that they look very much the same conceptually.

Also, Nagi is a girl

Look, he's not my favourite artist, but your linked pictures are utterly terrible: I don't like them either. I'll either assume you handpicked them for their blandness to try and cement your point, or simply haven't seen enough of the work. Solid artistic principles of anatomy and clothing, which constitutes 90% of the images, and generally excellent draftsmanship. I like the less strong colour saturation personally, and the casting is very good. I'm not going to trawl through images for you, because it's off topic, mostly full of dripping vaginas and shiny nipples, and you can do the searching yourself: but here's a handful of superior safe for work images to the ones you linked. Obviously better than SDOJ.
