Sega R-Type

Post by M0nk3y »

Just wondering if anyone knows why there's no R-Types on any Sega console since the MasterSystem? I mean, R-Type seems to exist on nearly every gaming machine and handeld known to man except the GG, MD/Gen, Saturn or DC.

And R-Type on the SMS was actually developed by Compile.

Irem probably didn't have any interest in developing for those systems, and no one could bother to license the game.

The MegaDrive was out popularized in Japan by the PC Engine and the SNES. I assume R-Type I or II was ever ported to the MegaDrive because it wasn't financially sound. I don't understand why Leo never made it to the Saturn. Delta was 3D, so that explains why the Playstation was chosen.

The only real problem, that I can remember, was that saturn could not have any triangles, so it was sometimes difficult to create economic 3D models for it, for in many occasions you would need more polys than psx to make something decent looking.

Just image if they did an R-Type 32XCD game. With the backgrounds as FMV streamed from CD and the 32X pumping around all the sprites, or even polys. Hell, any 32xCD shooter doing that would have been quality.

And the Saturn deserved a conversion of Leo.

Mega Drive would have been a wonderful hardware for an R-Type conversion, judging by other very close to the original 68000 versions of that game (namely X68000 and Amiga).

I think it's probably the opposite way of thinking: Delta was planned for the best selling system at time, so it was made 3D.

It's not like nowadays when you make a game 3D on pc and then turn around saying, "and now on which console do I release it?"

Wasn't R-Type planned for the Mega Drive at one point? And then it got scrapped, or something.

Well, it's not just R-Type... Konami's two flagship series (Gradius and Salamander) were only released on one Sega console (the Saturn).

Personally, I would have loved to have seen a Mega/Sega CD port of R-Type Complete. The only negative aspect would have been the limited colour palette.

Quartermann in EGM once said "Is R-Type II going to the Genesis?". I was hoping for it at the time, but the closest we got was SNES Super R-Type (slowdown = bleh).

A Compile-developed 8 Meg version on the Genesis would have had serious potential. The Amiga R-Type II was reasonable, but a Genesis version could have beat it.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Don't forget about the Saturn Twinbee DX Pack and Parodius games. Those are also flagship series. I still find it odd how Konami released no shmups on the Genesis, especially when they finally made some good stuff on the Genesis like Rocket Knight Adventures and Contra Hardcorps.

I would have loved to see R-Type on the Genesis/SEGA CD too.
