Not again.
That single screenshot in the article is next-gen brown enough for me to lose all interest :(

I actually kind of like Bugbear, because of FlatOut 1 & 2, both excellent driving games in their own right. First game, with the handling/difficulty set to simulation/real - whatever it was, have got to be some of the most engaging racing I've ever done using a keyboard.

But their style is not at all fit for Ridge Racer. FlatOut is pretty much RR's polar opposite. Driving through the finnish woods in a busted up muscle car is not the same as drifting 'round the U-turn down at the sunny beach in a red & white painted little sports car.

Why do companies keep releasing racing games that are a blurry mess? It doesn't look "fast", it just looks horrible and makes it hard to play.

I wonder how Unbounded sold compared to Ridge Racer 6 and to expectations. I haven't played FlatOut much but these latest installments seem more like spiritual sequels to that series with just the RR name added. It would make as much as Cave buying out R-Type and then releasing Dodonpachi R based on the classic formula or something that played nothing like previous installments. It would be like Street Fighter taking the next Virtua Fighter game with 3 buttons and a Ryu cameo and labeling it Street Fighter V.

If Unbounded didn't sell well, then it should be clear there's a disconnect between the brand and product. I think I can understand why Namco would do this—SRS probably sold horribly in part due to its completely nondescript branding—but the misbranding could confuse consumers.

However, I'd say Driftopia is actually promising news. If Bugbear is working on this project, then chances are very good they're not working on anything else. That suggests perhaps the main RR team is working on Ridge Racer 8 for the PS4 and next Xbox.

It's a given that Namco likes to release a new Ridge Racer game whenever a new gaming console is released. So I wouldn't be surprised to see a new Ridge Racer 8 for the upcoming PS4 platform this winter 2013 season. Would that entail a brand new Logitech GT wheel release as well?

Namco should release it entire Wangun Midnight: Maximum Tune 1/2/3 series as a HD revision on either the PS3 or PS4 with online support for good measure. Have they seriously thought about doing such a WM:MT HD trilogy game set?

Man, what happened to this:

Hell, even the more subdued look from Rage Racer onward wasn't so dreary.
Bamco doesn't know Ridge Racer anymore.

That video looked like fucking Split/Second [which was pretty fun to be fair], but it sure as hell wasn't Ridge Racer.

Apparently racing games can only take place in cities with massive amounts of smog (???).

Simple, Namco forgot about this which clearly had a negative effect on their ability to make good decisions.

What other way is there to make games look fast enough? To some beholders WipEout looked faster than F-Zero X, so there's more to it than frames per second.
Not to say blur is the only answer, but it certainly makes for smoother looking animation and less apparent aliasing, thus economics may be where it's at.

Fascinating how Mario Kart keeps getting away with looking ugly and having lame 1 player, but this here game is immediately bad news judging by the graphics alone.

MK kind of doesn't get a pass for that. MKWii looks like ass compared to MK:DD and it runs at 30fps in 3 or 4 player, unlike Double Dash.
[it's also a worse game, but hey]

And as for this, it doesn't even look like a Ridge Racer game, which is the real problem. If all references to Ridge Racer were removed, I'd have immediately assumed it was a sequel to Split/Second or something.

I'm actually not in the blur-is-bad crowd, it definitely gives a visual sense of speed, but there are quite a few games that do it to the point of excess.

although, people who think Wipeout is faster than F-Zero X should be shot :P

Anyone else worried that Outrun's going to have a sequel that takes this 'darker and edgier' look like browns and greys everywhere?

What exactly is the appeal of kart racers, anyways? They don't ever seem to feel slick or polished, and their visual styles tend to be very bland compared to something like Wipeout.

Mario Kart looks amazing compared to this. Especially the 3DS ver, so pretty.

I echo the sentiment that DD beats MK Wii hands down null1024, you're on the money there - but MKDS was a special return to form for the traditional style.

I also echo the sentiment that this crap isn't Ridge Racer.

Well, Turbo Outrun tried that years ago, and Sega learned. :P

I for one hope the PC version will be good. Not enough drift-centric racers on the platform I can think of (OutRun 2006 and Burnout Paradise being yesterday's news) and I like the title "Driftopia".
