The best "New" PS2 Shmup.

Post by Blade »

Mind you, I was initially going to go buy a special Controller Adapter for my PC so that I could play my PC games with my PS2 controllers, but then I saw Raiden III, Mushihimesama, Gigawing Generations, Psyvariar 2 Ultimate Final, Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou, etc. etc. all sitting nice and comfy on Lik-Sang.

I know there's a database out there for Shmups and whathaveyou, but I'm going for a number of factors here:

Powerup Diversity
Bumpin' Music
Overall Fun Blowing Stuff Up
Maaaaybe a little extra post-game stuff.

I honestly don't really care about difficulty, as I've played the likes of/own Gradius V, Ikaruga, Shikigami no Shiro 2, I just want something new, fun, and well...something Japanese-ish to play, heh.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

My favorite is still Gradius V.

It has alot of powerup options and different weapons to use. There is a large amount of difficulty depending on if you loop it (or put it on very hard from the start, which is a notch below normal loop 2).

Excellent music and graphics. And it's Gradius.

Hard to pick a best. Shiki II is my favorite, but it is hard to say that ANY game is obviously better than Gradius V. Gigawing Generations is painful to look at, but a whole lot of fun. DDP DOJ is gorgeous to look at but painfully hard.
And don't forget about Gunbird 1+2, and Dragon Blaze.

All of Cave's PS2 offerings fall very neatly into these categories.

Perhaps give Mushihimesama a try... all up that seems to be the biggest PS2 crowd pleaser among recent releases since Gradius V.

Gradius V = Silvergun for the PS2. Hard as nails though.

probably Gradius V and Raiden III neck and neck, altho at the moment my tv is on it's side so Gradius is making way for Raiden III and it's older and better brother Raiden Project

Well, to those of you who weren't listening, I said I HAVE Gradius V

So I decided I'm getting Raiden III, since DDP wasn't available, and the likes of Mushihimesama and ESPGaluda seem..."too cute" for my taste.

Good choice on Raiden III, but you're comments of ESPGaluda and Mushi are... wow. You're definately going to be missing out on some serious amounts of fun if you never get, basing your decision on the artwork.

Espgaluda is the best shmup that's been released on a console in the last few years imo :)
Still loving this one, no 1CC yet though

Not buying Espgaluda because you think it looks "too cute" would be a loss. It's definitely a great game if not the best shmup on the PS2. I mean, just last week I went into Hey arcade and there was a line for Espgaluda nearly the whole time I was there and I didn't see one person, other than myself, sit down to play Raiden III.

Yep . . .good choice mate. That's the one I would have recommended. It's more traditional and "old school" than the others mentioned, but is all the better for it IMHO.

Still, I suppose for somebody who played Raiden II to death on the PSX, I'm not TOO biased . . .ehhhh ????

DOJ is worth more than all the other PS2 shooters put together.

Not really - it's just hard. A hard sequel to DDP backed up with an absolutely fascist chaining system, designed purely for hardcore Cave fans and absolutely nobody else. Espgaluda is a better game overall.

I prefer Galuda to DOJ, myself.

GWG is a favourite among people who play for score. I've only played it a short time but it seems golden aside from the graphics problems.

Dragon Blaze is a must own, too. z0mg scaled graphics!!11one are the only problems with the port.

Gradius V gets my vote, Treasure did an exceptional job. I enjoyed going through Mushihime sama as well.

My votes go to Gradius V and Dodonpachi Daioujou. Get those two and you're in business!

Daioujou is brutally hard, unforgiving, and also has one of the nastiest chaining systems I've ever experienced. Despite all this, it's still friggin weet and keeps me coming back for more. One of the best offerings the PS2 has for shmupping goodness.

I just picked up Gradius V based on all the great reviews here on the forum. And I must say... fantastic. What a great piece of work this is. It seems that choice games are getting to be more and more scarce and this is one of the great ones. It's funny how most of the great games get no attention from the masses.

I reckon you should go for Mushi, I haven't played Espgaluda though.

DDP DOJ is brilliant but really is spawn of the devil, the brother of Garegga.

Cheers
