Steampunk style shmups? (Gigawing, Battle Garegga, Progear)

Post by dark »

Lately I've decided that I really enjoy the steampunk/diesel punk aesthetic when employed in shmups. Seeing re-imagined propeller driven planes, and large bosses that look like some kind of German mystery weapon from 1945 are appealing. I enjoy the creativity, and it's a nice break from triangular pointy space ships.

Can anyone think of anymore shmups that might fit into this genre outside the ones I've already played? I'm interested particularly in shmups that have an inspired but different look than a straight WW2 inspired shmup like Ghost Pilots or the whole Capcom 1942 etc game/series.

Here is what I've played and enjoyed so far:
-Gigawing series
-Battle Garegga (a total favorite, this game is my new life. The ships, the enemies, the background scenery, the music, the muted palette, and overall serious and dark mood of the game are amazing. Any recommendations for titles similar to this are much appreciated)
-Battle Bakeraid
-Progear
-Aerofighters 3 (actually don't really enjoy this game so much, but thought I would put it in so it doesn't get suggested)
-Under Defeat

Steel Empire (haven't played)
Sine Mora (the story mode is decent but the arcade mode is pretty bad)

Ibara's got a surprisingly dark/gritty graphical feel. From an aesthetic standpoint the stages are reminiscent of Garegga, as is the scoring.

Espgaluda's steampunk, at least I think.

Yeah, the enemy designs in particular have got a definite steampunk feel. The first game more-so than the second.

If you're in to Doujins, check out Jamestown on steam.

Vertizontal.. might not be to your tastes. More of a cartoony steampunk vibe going on I'd say.

Akai Katana is very similar to Progear in style. Gunbird/2 is probably the purest steampunk.

Gun Frontier, the aesthetic inspiration to BG.

OT; there is unfortunately nothing that can match the aesthetics of BG.
I wish there was but i'm sorry to say it man; you've already seen the best there is.

Empire of Steel/Steel Empire on the Mega Drive is pure steampunk.

Sort of related:
Scramble Spirits (arcade/SMS) - modern setting but stylised prop-driven planes, bosses range from large bombers to zeppelins to full on flying fortresses
Power Strike II (SMS) - alternate history setting but mostly starfighter/ship designs for enemies, the bosses could probably fit the bill

You mentioned Under Defeat so I'll say you should check out Ketsui, though neither of them really feel dieselpunk let alone steampunk, they're more "real-punk" than anything.
I really like Garegga, I guess it falls under dieselpunk alright, its giant bomber is its highest point imo.

Battle Garegga (aesthetically) reminds me of Gun.Smoke, Gun Frontier and Task Force Harrier (arcade).
Giga Wing reminds me of Guardian Force and Shienryu.
Boogie Wings reminds me of Sky Adventure.
None of the aforementioned looks steampunk to me. If you're after "military" colours, I can recommend Sonic Wings Special on Hard in tate.

Such a mechanical powered danmaku shmup candy cab in the Steamboy era that the anime film takes place in, would've been interesting to see. Of course, it'd be a intricate piece of mechanical ingenuity if produced in real life -- gears & all mechanical sprockets of film reels for the bullets, etc.

In real life, Tomy's Pocket Arcade shmup of "Attack from Space" (a mechanical wind-up marvel of Space Invaders themed shmup clone) would be the closest thing since it's inception back in 1982. Unfortunately, it doesn't keep score...the player has to keep track of how many invaders are destroyed in a single gaming session or wind-up if you will.

There are some mild steampunk elements to the Raiden Fighters trilogy. They're probably strongest in the first game.

Great suggestions guys, I really appreciate it. I'll have to take a look on youtube this weekend and see what some of the titles I've never heard of look like. It looks like I might also have to buy a playstation 2 :P

Armed Police Batrider has some similar gameplay, and even some similar art and the exact characters, but it doesn't have the awesome serious mood that BG has. Nor does it have the awesome dark music :?

I've played Ketsui through mame. It's great and I love it, though it doesn't have the "retro" reimagined feel that I get from the steampunk aesthetic - rather it looks pretty ultra modern / futuristic despite the odd propeller.

The mood of Garegga is really great. It's not really steampunk, but have you played Soukyugurentai? It reminds me of Garegga a little bit in that it has great music and a serious mood.

steampunk is some kinda military themed shmups, i would recommend some Toaplans (Flying/Fire shark, Twin cobra, Twin hawk,...) or Raiden/ Strikers 1945 series. For more info check out this thread

Robo Aleste on the Sega CD has a japanese steampunk theme. And a pretty good game.

Definitely mention ibara for that "Steampunk" aesthetic.

I remember first seeing it used in a game for Chaos-Engine and i then read The Difference Engine by William Gibson. At that time, early 1990s, it was new and novel really to use it. Now, well, I feel that it has been overused.

Both ibara and Battle Garegga have it.

I never really felt that musha Aleste, Spiggan 1 (PCE )and denin Aleste were strictly "Steam Punk". It was more that technology fusion and warring states Japan kind of thing mixed in with fantasy.

Edit:

Just scanning the list of titles mentioned and I noticed that good old Powerstrike 2[1] on the SMS is missing. It has that alternate history/future vibe going with Steam Punk aesthetics.
Out of all the games, it reminds me of the anime Last Exile in case that's something of interest

Did the definition of steampunk get vastly expanded since it was first coined? A lot of games mentioned in this thread don't have that aesthetic at all.

Of the game mentioned in this thread, Steel Empire and Gunbird I + II fall closest to that aesthetic, though more magical in the Gunbirds' case.
Espgaluda
Aetherpunk
Battle Garegga
Dieselpunk seems to fit . Anything with an Art Deco or Streamline Moderne style, but "futurised".
Ibara
Seems like a big mishmash of several styles. Sometimes it looks diesel, other times steam, other times something else entirely.

Most other titles just seem to be SciFi or military shooters, especially
Thunder Dragon series, Flying/Shark, Twin Cobra, Twin Hawk, Raiden, Strikers etc. etc.

Steel Empire is very steampunk but it kinda sucks.
