Video Games (1982)

Post by Jeneki »

I was digging though some old boxes and uncovered this:

It's a book on video games, published in 1982. For reference, the whole video game crash thing started around 1983.

There's just so many awesome quotes in here. In the first few pages:

"Have you seen that guy with a grey beard at the corner machine? He chunks down one quarter after another, but his games never seem to last more than sixty seconds. Don't laugh, that may be me."

"If someone offers you stock in Atari or gold - take the Atari. It's better than gold."

The most interesting chapter is the one on future games. Things the book correctly guessed: vibrating controllers, remote network gaming, computers in every household taking over arcades, subscription services for video games.

What was wrong though? Make enough predictions for a few of them to come true and somehow, like Nostrodamus, you're lauded as visionary in spite of the rest of the bullshit you came up with.

...

huh?

I already made fun of it, for telling us to buy Atari stock and how old people can't play games. I just balanced the negatives comments with a few positives.

But if you want another negative, there's a bit on movie tie-ins being a great thing. Maybe it was written by the same guy who green-lit all those extra copies of E.T.

Blade Runner is my guide to all the stocks not to buy. Coke's time is coming! Maybe not until 2019 though. They just barely squeaked through last time.
