Hahaha that Mute City video is fantastic. That's pretty broken alright. For my purposes, F-Zero X is fine though, since I'm not about to compete. Great game.

F-Zero X aside, I am pretty impressed with N64 graphics, despite the horrible limitations of the system. It's interesting-- I think many 3rd party games (like those from Midway, Perfect Dark, Extreme-G, or World Driver Championship) actually look better than Nintendo's. Comparing where the graphics of other systems were in 1996. This is including the PC-- think Quake or Interstate '76, and remember that comparable 3d accelerators that year cost more than the entire N64 console and still weren't a complete graphics solution (e.g., Monster 3d). Taking all this into account, it's pretty crazy that Nintendo was able to come out with a system with such advanced graphics features (like perspective-correct interpolated textures and fog) and not totally break the bank. Looking at it that way, sure it was kind of a mess, but I think it's underappreciated these days.

X Cup is fun to play around with, but I didn't miss it at all in GX since a good chunk of the random tracks aren't very good.

This thread got me to finally check out Sin and Punishment. Fuck me, how did I not play this before? Actually giving some thought to picking up an NTSC-J N64 and this game just to play on the actual hardware with the intended controller.

Don't think twice. It's still a very reasonably priced game, considering it's one of the system's highest points.

I think it's gotten cheaper too. I've been thinking of grabbing a copy, even though I have it for the Wii VC. The VC version does run well, unlike F-Zero X on the VC.

ahaha Arturo's introduction in Aidyn Chronicles is great

I really don't understand how they managed to make the introduction and the entire castle so terrible. The game gets much better later on, including your average random talksy encounter.

"Skinnies" damn trolls!

The game is keeping up the tradition of lightkeepers being interesting characters in games (the lightkeeper in this game didn't lose his son, but rather his pet mouse...so sad)

As far as modding it's just easier to open up your own N64 and just file a little bit of the plastic off the cartridge slot than to go and spend the extra money-

Yeah :( But, it's an alternative to pop-up, and it's good for atmospherics. Maybe it's the glow lighting of 1996-- astonishing at first, but quickly wears out its welcome from overuse.

So are there other worthwhile Japanese exclusives besides S&P, Dezaemon, and Bangai-O? I think those are the only ones I ever see mentioned. Anything exclusive to Europe?

Nope. This thread now has more pages than N64 has games worth playing.

It's also twice as many pages as the Vita has games worth playing

Hiryu no Ken Densetsu, a spinoff of Hiryu no Ken Twin / Flying Dragon's SD mode, has a single-player fighting game experience done right.

Super Robot Wars 64 (not to be confused with the awful fighter Super Robot Spirits) is yet another installment in the series.

I've seen a lot of folks suggest Wonder Project J2 over the years but I never understood the appeal.

Isn't there a Japanese exclusive Goemon on N64 too? Heard good things about that one.

Sick burn! :P

Hmm, actually both of you might be right. :( If it weren't for the fact that Nintendo makes really good first-party games, the N64 would've been pretty pointless. Luckily, they did!

Rare, Treasure (if only for one or two games) and Factor 5 (if only for technical reasons) did as much with the console. Hard to outshine Majora's Mask but that would've been great on any system.

Well, there`s also Wonder Project J2, Nushi Tsuri 64, Fuurai no Shiren 2, Doubutsu no Mori(Animal Crossing 64), Densha de Go! 64 and maaaybe Neon Genesis Evangelion(go for it only if you really like Eva, otherwise avoid like plague). But yeah, not a whole lot. N64 is a wrong console for imports... and for games too. :)

I really like the N64 controller as a d-pad controller. Too bad most games don't let you play with it. (Star Soldier does, though!)

Anyone know where to get some good (or any) Dezaemon 3D games/savefiles? Anyone actually made some of their own?

Puyo Puyo Sun is good, but it's cheaper on other systems. Not sure if you are interested in wrestling games, but I heard those JP Virtual Pro Wrestling games using the same engine as WWE No Mercy are extremely good.

There's a JP exclusive N64 Goemon, but it's a board game style game, not an action game like the other two. I was surprised Goemon's Great Adventure even made it here to the US.

So what does that make the worthwhile games per year rate for each system?
