The Nintendo 64 thread!

Post by trap15 »

Figured I'd nab the chance to make this, after reading antron's post in the PS1 thread

Same deal as the MegaDrive/SNES/PS1 threads.

My personal favorites:
Kirby 64 - Probably my favorite platformer on the N64, one of my favorite games as well.
Rayman 2 - Don't hear this game talked about much, but I found it quite fun as a kid. Haven't played it in years though, so no idea how it holds up still.
Bomberman 64 - Great typical Bomberman action, great single-player mode with a fair amount of things to do.
Bomberman Hero - More Bomberman! :P Haven't played this one in a while either, so I don't remember too much of it, but I do remember enjoying the single-player a lot. Also the music is incredible. Jungle as fuck.

Alrighty, this fad is officially dead.

There aren't any N64 games.

Yeah, tbh I had a fairly hard time coming up with that short list ~_~

Here's your list:

Gambare Goemon 5/Legend of Mistical Ninja
Star Fox 64
WCW vs NWO
Tsumi to Batsu - Hoshi no Keishousha/Sin & Punishment
Mischief Makers
GOLDEN EYE
Blast Corps
Turok
F-Zero X
Pilot Wings 64
Mario 64
Zelda OoT
Yoshi's Story

Bomberman 64 was really mediocre IMO.

Was going to mention a few games but KAI got me covered.

Just need to add Mario Kart 64 to that list.

I literally owned 4 games for the thing. Mario, Zelda, Ogre Battle 64, and later I got F-Zero for some stupid reason.

Oh, and bought Perfect Dark from a Funcoland for negative five dollars. I think. That's one of my worst purchases.

The Mario Kart on it was an upgrade from the SNES version at least.

The PC version remains my very favourite 3D platformer (I think it's about as good on DC). This and BG&E are where Ancel's at.

Games I'm, well, interested in: S&P, Pilotwings, F-Zero X, Bangai-O, Super Smash Bros. (Samus Aran is the lady), Star Fox 64 (too much hype to not give it a go at some point), Mischief Makers, Majora's Mask, Blast Corps. Oughtta revisit OoT one of these days (didn't finish it back when due to technical issues).

I must admit I always liked watching the Banjo Kazooie's attract mode (but I hope it performs better on the 360). Sorta liked that Xena game played vs CPU (there, I said it).

Perfect Dark was astonishing when I first played it (for the first time) a few years ago - it has lots of little minigame-like things you can do, goals to be met, and additionally some really crazy speedrunning techniques to attempt. I haven't beaten it though - and the main reason for that is the unfortunately bad framerate. Many N64 games give me headaches nowadays, and this is one of them. That's really the only thing dragging the game down, however; a nice evolution of Goldeneye, and far ahead of its time really. If only these guys and the Deus Ex team could've smashed together PD's better combat and DX's better story while keeping both games' unique takes on multiple paths to objectives (more firearms combat oriented in PD, of course). I remember somebody gushing about PD to me back in the day but I realize now that they were barely hinting at the neat stuff in there. Even today I think the bot options are better than almost all games that even bother to include them. This keeps the game playable long after the community has shrunken.

I need to get back to my Turok 3 play sometime - not the stupid bare-bones arena combat game, but the one which seems to come after T2. Interesting premise but strange execution. Still, promises to be more conventional than Turok 2 which loses almost every player after they realize how monstrous the later maze levels really are (how many Turok players actually finished the games?). This is right in line with Duke Forever and the other oddities on the console - the system is pretty good (like the PSX) at portraying cosy-but-surreal virtual locations.

Racers - the Rush games aren't the best-looking versions, but still the most likely shot you'll have at them, and as a bonus they add coins and other things to go after for replay value.

DOOM 64, obviously, although the better way to play this is now via a PC port project.

Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth is a reasonable attempt at a score attack game.

Plenty of third person platformers - if you don't like these, much of the console's library will be of little use.

The Castlevania games are personal favorites. Odd, moody games. Still need to try out Hybrid Heaven sometime, but I'm not expecting much.

Koei's WinBack seems to be available on the PS2, but the RE4 style of combat originated here.

Majora's Mask still holds some secrets for me.

Interesting, I'm studying single-player Bomberman curios.

Technically Mario 64 was really a slide simulator game.

Then some wizard realized this, and unleashed the full power of the N64 with a 180 snowboarding kind of a game.

The N64 was really a slide game machine when you get down to it.

Golly! How could I forget that snowboard game? The animations were top-notch alright.
Funny thing about the Goemon game is, when I saw it for the first time, I thought it looked bad. In more recent times I found it pretty badass-looking. Aesthetics are hilarious things.

I remember clearing (100%) Zelda, Mario, Banjoo, Star Fox, Goldeneye, Blast Corps, Mistical Ninja, Pilot Wings 64, Yoshi's Story, etc. Fuck! I have fond memories of this console, the only shitty point is that I missed all the PSX fighting games and shmups thanks to it.

The first Turok was insane, it took me ages to clear it when I was a kid.
WinBack was good. Lots of good ideas on that game. The PS2 sequel sux.

Star Wars: Racer was amorphous as hell, but I liked it. Last game I bought from that system.
The N64 doesn't have any decent racing or fighting game.

Majora's mask is also a fun one. Really dark story for a zelda game, makes for quite an enjoyable experience!

Both of the Zelda games, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Sin & Punishment, and Mario Tennis. I like this system for some weird reason. It does have an extremely limited library. It's all that multilayer stuff that got me hooked on it. We used to play the thing so much it would freeze up on us.

My N64 mostly just collects dust these days, unless someone starts to wax poetic about Goldeneye then I might dig it out. Sin & Punishment is a good reason to dig it out. Surprised it's not being mentioned more in the thread. I'm sure Sin & Punishment 2 is probably a much better game, but I haven't played it yet.

Me too, lord knows how that one was forgotten. S&P2 is a better game, but by how much is subjective. The original is still plenty solid.

OK, I was dissing the N64 in the other thread. But here are my picks: F-Zero X (runs great, fast, has plenty of depth, and amazing music programming), Blast Corps (clever and well executed), Goldeneye (single player! I think this is a lot more playable than Perfect Dark), Sin and Punishment (I prefer this over 2 by far), Mario Kart 64 (OK, so half the tracks in this piss me off, but the balance and physics are very nice-- much better than the sequels), and StarFox 64 (decent follow-up). I also really liked Ocarina of Time, but I didn't sink enough time into it to finish it.

Pokemon Snap is surprisingly fun, too :)

Nah, there were lots before that which were 60 fps, including Nintendo's own SNES racing games.

Haha, this is the max rank version of the console threads.

Sin and Punishment, Mischief Makers and Mario Tennis are my favorites. I wanted to play Ogre Battle but it seems to be pretty watered down compared to the rest of the saga (and it looks ugly as hell).

WWF No Mercy was easily the best wrestling game ever, then came VPW 2.

Just picked up Star Soldier today for $5 and it's good but the bullets blend into the background very easily. Other than that, I'm surprised it has a battery save. I still haven't played Goemon's Adventure much because it requires a controller pak and I don't have one.

I have to pay respects to Diddy Kong Racing. Was so much fun as a 1p game. Hard as nails, charm, great tunes. Especially the boss races and that crazy octopus.

Rare need to start rejuvinating themselves with stuff like this in the current era.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

My N64 is a SIN & PUNISHMENT adaptor. S&P, when you want to play Panzer Dragoon and Wild Guns at the same time without operating two televisions. BAKURETSU MUTEKI BANGAIOH and YUKE YUKE! TROUBLE MAKERS are okay if you're into that sort of thing.

EAD games are generally great too!

I agree with Mr. Oscuro, the N64 Draculas have a certain mood and they're often very decent 3D actioners as well with their perilous, athletic platforming. INDEPENDENT GROCER'S ALLIANCE would've avoided his PS2 humiliation if he'd put down the WOLF3D MAP EDITOR and paid attention to these games' towering level designs.

Interesting, I wonder how many other folk feel this way. Personally, I love S&P, there are rewards to be reaped aplenty.

My principal issue with S&P2 is its length: both stages and number of them. But to me, it still offers the greater highs and more rewarding overall score challenge, since there's so much to do and so many unreal set-pieces in which to do them. It's also more dynamic overall, and the soundtrack is rad.

Just wish I could 1CC it, but it's so darned long it's too much to memorise in the limited time I have available. :(

Back OT, I love Mario Golf 64. Prefer it to Tennis in-fact.
