How do you hold you balltop?

Post by LRa »

And do you hold it differently for shmups, fighting games and for general arcade games?

I don't think I hold it differently for different types of games...I use the same form for every type of game. I hold the balltop part of the joy with my fist.

There was a great article in an issue of Hogan's Alley where they had photos of famous cartoonist hands- how they held their pencil.

It'd be neat to see the same for players that use joysticks.

The thing I noticed is that oriental players tend to hold their ball between two finger unlike occidental which "hug" the ball.

I notice a lot of japanese people hold the ball from underneath (almost like the above pic). I believe this is stemming from people who play fighters a lot (and need to do complex QCR type moves). But for me (and I think most shumppers) you don't really grab the stick, but rather hold it between thumb and middle fingers (on left and right sides respectively). Since in shmups you are doing more soft tapping left and right type of movements.

Yeah...that's how I hold it. Holding underneath feels really uncomfortable to me.

Don't you feel holding underneath is a lot more precise. "hugging" makes the movements very crude imo.

Can you post a picture of your holding style?

Same (Klatrymadon here... small world, huh? )!

I've noticed this odd "wine glass" grip, too. I suppose it'd feel like 2nd nature after a bit of practice.

Which is how I play fighters...sometimes/most of the time, I use only my thumb and two fingers to play shmups. I 'll often "anchor" my pinky on the control panel for stability.

Underneath, but not in the "pure" way ( my fingers are too long, thanks to years of swimming). I put the ball on space between the thumb and the index finger. Also for reasons of fingers' length, i need to curl them on the base. Useless to say it, i need rest every 50 minutes or so.

I hold it this way for shooters and 2D fighters.

Wow. I never knew how off I was...

The entire heel of my hand all the way to the tip of my pinky rest on the flat panel, and the tips of my ring and middle finger also rest on the panel.

I find this a lot less precise than putting the stick between the fingers.
It seems harder to make subtle movements.

^ yep thats almost identical to how I hold it (except I anchor with the ridge of my hand, pinky and ring fingers curled in).

Like Sabreman's, but the joystick is a bat, not a ball.

Not so much a vagina as a flap. More a stick, than a ball. I have an X-arcade, it has baseball bat style ends rather than balls.

Maybe so, but the buttons aren't switches. I'm assuming they are simply those rubbery "plungers".

I hold the balltop in the arch of my thumb and index finger. My fingers are left loose.
