How do you hold you balltop?
And do you hold it differently for shmups, fighting games and for general arcade games?

I notice a lot of japanese people hold the ball from underneath (almost like the above pic). I believe this is stemming from people who play fighters a lot (and need to do complex QCR type moves). But for me (and I think most shumppers) you don't really grab the stick, but rather hold it between thumb and middle fingers (on left and right sides respectively). Since in shmups you are doing more soft tapping left and right type of movements.

Yeah...that's how I hold it. Holding underneath feels really uncomfortable to me.Dave_K. wrote:But for me (and I think most shumppers) you don't really grab the stick, but rather hold it between thumb and middle fingers (on left and right sides respectively). Don't you feel holding underneath is a lot more precise. "hugging" makes the movements very crude imo.TalkingOctopus wrote:Yeah...that's how I hold it. Can you post a picture of your holding style?

Underneath, but not in the "pure" way ( my fingers are too long, thanks to years of swimming). I put the ball on space between the thumb and the index finger. Also for reasons of fingers' length, i need to curl them on the base. Useless to say it, i need rest every 50 minutes or so.

I hold it this way for shooters and 2D fighters.

I find this a lot less precise than putting the stick between the fingers.iatneH wrote:Wow. I never knew how off I was...
The entire heel of my hand all the way to the tip of my pinky rest on the flat panel, and the tips of my ring and middle finger also rest on the panel.
It seems harder to make subtle movements.
