Maldita Castilla (the new game by Locomalito)

Post by Observer »

Well, this guy keeps pumping crazy stuff. After the awesome Hydorah and Viriax, now comes Maldita Castilla (a pun between the region of Castilla and a famous spanish phrase "Esa maldita costilla", ¡joder, poder de la Ñ!), a Ghosts 'n' Goblins inspired game.

Heh, was going to make a thread myself.

Tried the demo and it was pretty good, though very easy to finish. Nowhere near G'n'G's difficulty. Still, it was a demo of an unfinished product so I'm sure it'll be toughened up.

While the game does look very nice, I hope it's possible to play without the "old and dirty monitor effect". Not that it looks bad, but it'd be nice to have the option.

F2. Though it gave me some weird visual glitches.

Great little game, looking forward to play the complete version. The demo was kind of easy but it was just the first stage, I'm sure things will get much tougher later on. Especially since it's based on G'n'G.

By the way I didn't now about Viriax, that one is good too.

Was just going to post about this. Enjoyed the demo; a lot more once I set up joy2key. I love the GnG series, and I really liked the little touches that Locomalito put in Hydorah and L'abbaye des morts.

Eagerly awaiting the finished product.

Seems as though the full version is out. http://indiegames.com/2012/12/maldita_c ... _1212.html
New video in there from about a month ago looks really nice. Lots of good variety.

The faux-CRT/scanline effect is unusually good! Lovely Mega Drive sound to the music, too. Can't wait to spend more time with it...

Protip: the sickle weapon is very spammerrific and makes the game a lot easier. Bosses go down pretty quickly with it.

Reached halfway through stage 4 (playing without continues). The torchlight section is pretty cool, I'm loving the details put into the game. Very impressive considering it's all done by a single developer.

Finished the game, but the last stage will only unlock if you find all the Moura's Tears. I'm still missing one.

By the way, finishing a stage without dying will net 1000 points, and 5000 is you finish without getting hit. Extend at 100k points.

Am I seriously going to have to get a Joy To Key poop to play this damn thing?

I don't think so. For me, the USB Saturn Pad worked right out of the box.

Ugh, screw this. I'm looking everywhere on stage 5 but can't find that last tear no matter what. I found all sort of hidden items scattered throughout the level (a ring, a pair of boots, a potion, a 1UP...) but the tear is nowhere in sight. I don't know what I'm missing here.

You could try asking Locomalito directly via email. Back when Hydorah first came out, I asked him about the ship sprites in the ending I didn't recognize, and he answered quickly in a friendly and polite way.

I wonder if the creator of this magnificent game realized that "Maldita Castilla" could be an almost literal translation of "Akumajou". :D

Got the pad to work; just had an odd setup screen I guess.

My initial impressions had been poor, due to the front half of the second level being an elevator level. Which is something we just don't do, due to it always being awful.

But I think it pulls itself together alright aside from that. 4/5 if you're not completely sick of this sort of thing. 3/5 if you'd prefer your platform shooter use more than 2 buttons.

I was about to send an e-mail to Locomalito, but decided to search for the last Tear one last time...and managed to find it. The thing is VERY well hidden, few people will manage to find it on their own. I could tell you guys where it is but I won't spoil you yet.

The final stage is insane and the end boss is pretty tough, but managed to 1cc the game. Guess what, after you beat the whole thing, it shows you a list of extras to complete.

I'll try to record a playthrough in the weekend.

"It pays homage to..." I stopped reading after Black Tiger / Dragon. I didn't look through every screenshot but what I saw looked flatter than Ghosts 'n' Goblins.

That isn't to say it looks garbage, but if it is all flat stuff then it certainly has no claim to mentioning Black Tiger.

Well, I was thinking of uploading a playthrough, but someone got me covered already: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1PrTN-hS8g

I'll upload my own if I happen to complete all the extras list. Already found the Amadis.

What do you mean by flat? Linear level design/progression?

The linear level design appearing in one shot - but like I said, I need to look at some video and stuff.

It's a gentler clone of Ghouls n' Ghosts. It's really nothing like Black Tiger, Magic Sword, Ghostbusters 2, or Karnov.

... freakin' Karnov.

(Maybe I'm not really ready to evaluate its difficulty. Since it's been years since Ghouls has presented a challenge to me. I still think it's trivial once you learn the game.)

Yeah, it has less of a "Locomalito-twist" than his other games. Hydorah is very Gradius-like, but it has much more of an original spin on the formula than does MC.

A very fun play, regardless. Make sure you check out the instruction manual pdf on the download page. It's fantastic.

In which ways does the ending change? The currently available Youtube replays only show one good ending and one bad one. Are there others? I think I read on Locomalito's site something about the game having four different endings.

Well, I noticed the game warns you if you use more than 4 continues. A death-like figure shows up and says "Keep continuing at the cost of your soul!". This same figure shows up again before you face the final boss, so my guess is that he won't let you through if you credit-fed too much.

So, I believe the four endings are:

1) Finish stage 5 without all the Moura's Tears - bad ending 1
2) Reach the final boss using more than 4 continues - bad ending 2
3) Finish the game without completing all the extras - good ending 1
4) Finish the game and complete all extras - good ending 2
