What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Lol, that's the only route I've ever used. I find that the feeling of playing through a game like that without dying is the most fun, and often I turn games off when I still have lives left because I feel like my momentum has died. So the only few times I've beaten it were all no-miss clears. The jumpslash route is extremely intense - you have to put a lot of strategy into your path but the whole thing can still go to shit in an instant.

Been playing the sequel (yet again) and I'm warming up to it. I kind of like how there's more room for improvisation. If I took a huge break from the first NR and came back I'd forget where all the power-ups are located and fare horribly, but this one I can not play for months at a time and still improve. Damn boss rush at the end is keeping me from the clear though, I can consistently get to them with 10 or so lives left but after I die I usually can't be fucked going through all of 7-2 again.

I'd probably not mind hanging onto the jumpslash in NR1 if it didn't stop you from attacking normally while jumping forward. As is, I just get bored and pick up something else because I want to splatter a disc thrower and his weapon with the windmill star or blow up a staircase full of enemies with the firewheel. I usually have one at the end of stage 2, saving some tedium, and it's obviously useful at 6-2, but that's about all I consistently use it for.

NRII actually gave me a harder time to no-miss than the first game. It's easy to think of it as a pushover with the mountain of extends it hands out, but the very last stage and its boss rush suddenly become very intense when one death will blow the whole run. Some nasty chokepoints in the last area that fully justify all the firepower the game gives you. Shame it didn't reach that intensity sooner, but the game's so fun and gorgeously presented I don't really care.

I've not managed to no-miss NRIII yet because of one reason. The last stage only gives you enough time to clear it by blowing through the spike rooms using the invincible firewheel. Lose that weapon or run out of ammo and you're fucked. Closest I've got is Clancy's second form but I got nervous and screwed up. NGIII is exactly the same about this. Funny how for all the extra difficulty in the US version the hardest thing about the game was there all along.

You can still slash normally while by holding up on the d-pad and pressing attack. Makes it a little harder when jumping across a long gap but still doable. Haven't played the game in a while but I'm pretty sure holding up + forward works.

You mean down on the pad while jumping to slash normally, right? Up will get you the "no weapon" empty hand (actually didn't know the second one until now!).

But nope, you can't cancel the jumpslash while leaping forward, just straight up. By the same token you can't use other subweapons while leaping forward, just up. That used to bug me slightly, but it makes sense now. I'm sure Tecmo wanted to keep that advantage to the short-range jump slash, rather than letting the projectile weapons do its job too.

I'll have to give the jumpslash route a go sometime, you make it sound a lot of fun. I have a fetish for NR1's vanilla jumping attack, though - it feels so good to dive head-on into an enemy and shred it with a perfectly-timed swipe (to that *ka-THWACK!* sound effect). Especially when it's that or getting knocked into a pit. That's one reason I could never get into the PCE version, the sword won't come out until Ryu's well off the ground, ruining that explosive feeling.

In related news... sold off my MD Batman because it's a joyless bore compared to the infinitely greater FC one. As with NR, I prefer my enemies to explode when defeated. One of the most comprehensive routings of a 16-bit title by its 8-bit counterpart ever. Come to think of it, FC Ninja Ryukendens murder the SFC compilation too.

WTF @ it cocking up the FC game's chillingly minimal ending, too.

Uh yeah down, lol. Been a while since I've played. But can you really not use the jumpslash jumping forward even by returning the pad to neutral then doing down + attack?

Oh yeah, return to neutral then down+B does work, but it'll stop all forward momentum too.

Something I miss when going back to the first and second games from the third is being able to see what's in each item "box." It's maybe not as elegant a solution as Vampire Killer (MD)'s use of double candles to indicate there's a subweapon inside, but it makes it a lot easier to know when you can safely break a box as collateral damage while killing a ledge-guarding enemy. I don't think I've ever had a working knowledge of what's found where in the first game, the three extends aside, so I tend to cycle subweapons frequently and just use whatever's to hand.

Two things I dislike about Saturn Bomberman (J): the protagonist's voice (not even the voice itself as much as the game obnoxiously reminding me he's voiced now) and too "soft" sound of explosions (softer than in Bomerman Tournament).
Shame as I'd like to play Master Game more. Keep researching into single player modes of various Bomberman games and wondering why after the first one, Hudson kind of wandered off. In pre-SMB world, the primordial Bomberman (1983) must have been one of the very best games around (if the GB port is anything to judge by), before multiplayer came into discussion. I'll say it again - probably the first real-time dungeon crawler.
Maybe Hudson can't imagine themselves bettering their own game.

Nevertheless, gotta appreciate the Saturn Bomberman's glamour. Some quality pixel art to be seen right there (that Joumon boss of Master Game). Certainly the most gaudy Bomberman game I've seen.

Blazed past about 3 bosses by abusing stat reduction and Balthios' zauber powers. Can't wait for the sequel.

Been wandering the wasteland in Fallout 3 again which I find a strangely relaxing experience. It is one of those games where the initial 10 levels kind of suck but from then on it gets really fun. I am now level 16 and can dispatch all of the enemies without too many problems until the really big guys come out to play and shit gets serious. Also I am really liking the energy weapons and am collecting all of the unique variants as an extra task.

Kamen Rider: Climax Heroes Fourze. It's by Eighting and it KICKS ASS. Definitely one of the best import Wii games and if you like Kamen Rider it's definitely a treat. I know there's a newer game out too but this one is pretty nice.

Played through the gym of Tomb Raider, on Saturn, where it all begun. One of those very few games where I find low framerate almost sickening.
Which is a shame, as it is, from the word go, my kind of game. Horribly dated, technically, but I didn't expect anything better. Even Lara looks more human than countless character designs I'm seeing in games nowadays. If only your average "cartoony" designs were this good in western games.
Played Anniversary on the PC, but it brought some Crystal Dynamics pollution to the table. Better technology, yet the game not soulful enough.

I know I said I was through with Bethesda games after quitting New Vegas due to crash bugs, but I got a good deal on Skyrim (360) on Black Friday (all the preorder stuff came with), so now I'm playing that. Pretty early on, but going for a stealth/archery build. If I get bored I'll start using magic. I'm playing on Expert, but haven't hit any difficult speedbumps yet. I think I like the new skill system, although having health/magicka/stamina as stats is pretty lame. They're all pretty useful to all characters - unless maybe you swap mana for stamina. Would've been better with something like Strength/Intelligence/Dexterity. O well.

Pokemon Trading Card Game [GBC].

It's Pokemon! Except without any grinding. Also, you have a chance of actually losing! Surprisingly fun, and has mid-match auto notesave [deleted on load so you can't save-scum a fight], which is amazing because the battles take quite a while, so just being able to drop and pick up is great.

Once I get all the medals, I'll see if that English patch for the JP only sequel is any good.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Although you could blame Bethesda for farming the game out, Obsidian made New Vegas and that gives a good indication as to why it was such a mess at launch. Pretty good after the patches though. Shame aboutthe invisible walls and messed up difficulty curve.

Not technically "playing" but since ebay gave me a $5-off coupon on any purchase $50-or-over, I think I will be purchasing the VING port of Elevator Action Returns for the Sega Saturn. Strike while the iron is hot, after all.

Has anybody here played Elevator Action Returns co-operatively? Pretty solid game, but in the single player mode something seems to be missing and I'm trying to put my hands on it. Like those idle seconds when you retrieve data behind red doors. Those don't add any "stealth" tension and I think the point is, two players could rush forward the way one person can't.

I usually can rope my friends into playing my Saturn games with me. A round of Die Hard arcade is usually par for course for hanging out. Same with Crazy Taxi and Power Stone 2.

I can recommend the original Burnout for the sake of split-screen racing. Something about it just worked for me.
Now I wonder if the odd bit of Gunstar Heroes that drags on and on wasn't meant to make you ask your pals to help you out.

My overall gaming skills are VASTLY superior to when I was younger. It's not even a contest. The main difference comes from how I play.

For example, when I was a kid, I didn't have a computer, or disposable income, and my family wasn't rich. By the time I got my first job, I'd been "collecting" games for about a decade. I think I had about a dozen games for each of the systems I owned (the three main Nintendo systems, and a Genesis... No Sony, no later model Segas, nothin'.) So, compared to now, having access to hundreds of games, many of which I still haven't even played, where I play through a story-driven game like Zelda: The Whatever of Something, love it, leave it, and move on... Back then, I'd end up going back to other games I'd played a hundred times, because I didn't have a huge and daunting "to play, beat, 1cc, or amuse myself with" list. I dumped more hours into whatever games I had on hand as a kid, than I would EVER dump into any non-shmup these days, because that's what I had available.

The me of 10 years ago could beat me handily at Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Snake Rattle and Roll, F-Zero GX, probably Avara, and do all kinds of things in some games that I'm sure I'd be impressed by these days. However, toss a brand new game in front of the two of us, and I will finish first and easier, every time.

The idea that only Obsidian releases bugged RPGs is kind of tiresome.
Bethesdas games are usually riddled with bugs. Even though they have much more staff and a lot more dough to spend. Just check out Skyrim on release.
Obsidian has had to release games that didn't have enough testing done simply because the publisher would have chopped off their dicks if they didn't release it when they said.
That, and no moniez.

I'll say it again - Xenoblade Chronicles feels a lot like some cRPGs I played (Gothic first and foremost). I liked it better than Morrowind, but it's not saying much. If your PC can emulate Wii, give it a try.
Quite notably, it wasn't too buggy. (Wii games can't really be patched without hack solutions, so they had to do some testing beforehand.)

Paradise runs at 60 fps, which I doubt any NFS game in existence does on consoles.

Yes, the Saturn port has been a goddamn riot with friends who aren't really into this whole gaming thing. Slapstick Murder Simulator.

However, in singleplayer it's one of the only arcade games I've come across that demands to be played on maximum difficulty. It's surprisingly mild otherwise with the generous delay between enemies spotting you and attacking. On V.Hard you can easily get ambushed by a baddie who's popped up/out behind you, they don't hesitate. Much more Rolling Thunder-esque.

If the game's lacking something it's memorable boss battles (sometimes any boss at all), though the endgame still feels great. Thanks in no small part to the smooth jazz stylings of MFN' YACK accompanying the Vermillon Sunset and a classic Bond-esque setpiece. Oh, it also lacks a similarly Roger Moore cool cat like Albatross.

Spoily spoily: Ending is classic bittersweet Taito. The one where the nuke explodes killing all the team is the good end.

Ooh, does the saturn port have an arranged soundtrack? That'd be really sweet. Though if not, it's not a terrible loss.
