Seriously, it's not a handicap. It might even be the opposite. Who knows ? So little are giving it a serious try. And those who do are dominating the DDP rankings :p
By the way, circular motion (which I can do anyway) don't seem nearly as important to me as having 3 or even 4 fingers for directions instead of just one on a pad. This increases reactivity and possibility of making very small adjustments in all directions at any time. I think circles look like crap in comparison to the ability of doing that, you see circles being used a lot in those games ? I see reactivity and small adjustments in all directions a lot though.

And what about comfort? Don't you think holding an ergonomic pad (eg, a Saturn pad) in your hands is more comfortable?

How did this jump to some stupid pads from the REAL OFFICIAL ARCADE CONTROLS?

Insert "or holding a stick with your hand" into the post above.

If I can say something from my humble position... I started playing smups (Touhou) with a keyboard and after 2 months of trying to do a easy mode 1cc I finally bought a gamepad and not only did I got the1cc but also started playing normal mode decently...

can't it simply be a matter of born skill?

I play with a stick. I suck at DOJ. :P

IMO input method has nothing to do with anything. Whatever you're used to and comfortable with is the best for you. I've never been a computer gamer so keyboards feel really foreign to me. Sticks, even good ones, have deadzone. Keyboards don't. So maybe that is an objective advantage. But again, it's comfort and familiarity that matter.

Awesome stuff, Prometheus. I watched that DOJ vid all the way through. I thought the crowd really got into it after your first death. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them thought what you were doing was easy before then with how effortless you made it look. If only they knew.

There are more important matters worth debating. Examples:

-Does sikraiken cheat?
-Is Garegga a piece of shit?
-How many aspies can you beat up?
-Which 2hu would u fuk?

Oh, this thread is going in THAT direction now.

Anyway, it looked like an awesome experience Prom. I loved how the crowd cheered every time after you defeated a boss. Even if you didn't clear, you at least put on a good show for the audience and that's all that really matters in the end.

Those videos are awesome. It would be so, so, so cool for events like this to spread. In the US there has been a huge resurgence in the fighting game scene; after seeing this I can't help but think that with the right players and the right audience, STGs could see something similar.

And Prometheus, your DOJ skills are still ridiculous. I bet it felt pretty great to be up there like that.

Yeah, seems you can't have any discussion here without some ass butting in after 2-3 posts, trying to shut it down. I was genuinely interested in PROMETHEUS' expert opinion.

Anyway, great performance, the video was awesome to watch.

You can discuss whatever you want for all I care. :)

DOJ performance was solid, I saw the whole thing the other day and couldn't get over the fact that so many people were watching a live run. It made me feel a bit warm inside.

Not at all, I see this as a disadvantage because your fingers are made unavailable because you need to hold the pad. Whereas a keyboard is like a piano where you have easy access to any keys with all your fingers for optimal, fast and accurate presses !

Then again I generally agree with the opinion that says "its just a matter of what you're most comfortable with". It's been proven before by MMM for the pads, and same thing for keyboards and obviously sticks. I think even though some controlers might have some little advantages, players' skills matter for 95%, controller 5%. It doesn't really matter.

Thank you and they will only stagnate or improve !! You never lose your skill, only get rusty until you get a few hours of practice and everything comes back really fast. And yes, it did feel great :)

It's pretty incredible isn't it ? It touched me as well and in the end you see me say "thank you" to the crowd when they're applauding, and as they kept applauding I said "thank you" again, and added "... so much" (merci... beaucoup). It was pretty amazing.

And I forgot to add that people came to ask most of us for autographs as well. I was shocked. That's the first time it ever happened to me I think. People who don't know about shmups or Tetris or speedruns, they see our stuff, they're convinced within a few hours "those guys are freaking gaming heroes" and they come to ask for autographs. O_O

Those were two beautiful vids. Thanks for sharing.

Aside from the obvious display of skill, I think the most amazing part is playing on a non-tated LCD screen using a keyboard via an emulator. So much for all the hand wringing that has gone on over the years about tate, lcd's, lag, scanlines, true low rez, and stick vs pad.

Good job guys !
I was there specialy from Paris to see your run, and it was very impressive and interesting of course
Firsteval, it 's the first time that an event of this dimension was FREE in France
As u can see, many people came in to see this Dai ou Jou run in prime time ( sturday afternoon ), not because they were lost or something, but because they were attracted to this unique experience that is the "superplay in live"
The music, the screams of the crowd and both commentator attracted people from anywhere in this event
We were like in a roman arena, this stall was very busy at this moment, people watching from the balconies, very intense :-)

The Last superplay show that I saw was at the Stunfest in Rennes ( north West of France ), who is the most important Versus fighting event in Europe
I think the organisators didn't feel the infatuation, because of the place who has been dedicated to
There 's was a small and a big scene for the superplayers, and when Rechiku started his run on Futari 1.5 on the big scene, not many people came in, there was only one commentator who just improvised cause it was not planned
At the same time on the small scene, another superplay run on a zelda or metal gear solid, something like that
Well, the customer who paid for this event, want to enjoy and play on a lot of cabs who were here for everybody
They came there specialy for the versus fighting

Anyway, I think that this Superplayers team is going to improve and I 'll be there next year to enjoy the runs !

See u next year guys, and THX for the show :-)

Congrats to you and the rest involved on such awesome "experimet" Prometheus. Hopefully more events like this are made in France and other European countries to please fans and introduce shmups to newer generations :D

I'll try and watch those vids this evening! :D Maybe you will inspire some folks to start playing on "hitbox" controls (for those of you not familiar, it's an arcade stick box, but instead of the stick, it has buttons for directions).

These are pretty rough, but basically:

1: A french player who attended this year's Wasshoi at GSF2012, ran a similar event in France! That's a huge crowd! The event is packed!

2: At at event called Montpellier in Game, a skilled player did a live run in front of an audience on a big screen. There were two commentators, one of which did comedy and one which went over the game system. The event looks amazing! But playing Dodonpachi on a keyboard must be insane lol

3: I think it's a blog about organizing the event? There's a bunch of photos of the venue! And the crowd is completely packed! The venue's filled with people just standing and watching!

The guy seems really impressed by how many people are there 8)
