I think it's got some really great parts.
Search the forum- I think there was a similar thread that fleshed it out quite a bit.

I rented it back in the day and found it to be awful. The FMV cinemas were kind of fascinating what with all of their blatant sexual imagery, though. Hell, the last boss is a giant ovum that you shoot while a voice chants "fertilize, fertilize..." I guess that counts for something.

That's better than RTF.

The problem with the game is that it mixes too many angles into the equation. Vert/hori/3D etc.

It does none of them great and most levels are far too easy. The FMV's are gob smacking and are worth checking out.

There was a sequel but it was not a shmup on the ps2. I think it was like resident evil in space or something.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I'd say it's great. Not excellent, but far from just being "okay". A few steps down from the likes of Einhander or G-Darius, but miles and miles above Space Shot. Overall, a good addition to any shmupper's PSX library.

Oh, and you'll never think the same way about the words "Mission complete" EVER AGAIN.... *shiver*

Terrible game...poor level design & layout, badly animated enemies, irritating music & the Bosses flash completely red when they get shot, thus making it very tiring to stare at them for very long.

The FMV intro & cutscenes are gorgeous though.
Probably the best on the PSX & on par to Silpheed 2 on the PS-2.

You can clearly tell where the budget went on this game.

One stage in Philosoma, looks like the 3rd multi-level mecha city stage in TFV.

I liked it a lot when I first played it...but now it pales in comparison to others. The diff views is what makes it unique.

Well, since the thread goes on.

I personally think it's below average stuff. Space Shot is a million times better than this. The only thing going for it really is that it has lots of different points of view. Still is no SHIFTING camera like in Einhander, or something cool like R-Type Delta, so it doesnt look cool.

Go for Philosoma only if you're interested in a comprehensive PS1 collection. There are just so many other games that are more likely to draw you in, especially if you have the ability to play imports.

Jesus fucking Christ, where's the love for Philosoma? It was the Resident Evil of shmups on PSX, for fuck's sake!

Bullshit

Space Shot owns it. :D

Space Shot is pretty enjoyable, while Philosoma has crappy gameplay.

Well... I thought Space Shot was just a cheap knockoff of Thunderforce, but I guess we can just agree to disagree. ^^;

The clue is that Philosoma's gameplay is crap, but its aesthetics were ahead and it had a big influence on Einhander. So yeah, it's not fun to play, but it's interesting to play it at least once for the trip.

Sorry to interrupt guys, but what is "Space Shot"?
If it's anything like TFIII, I'll want to try it for sure!

Any links & pics?

Thanks in advance.

Zweihander,

I just had a look at your collection and noticed Astrosmash! How cool was that game, I spent hours and hours playing it. Everything that goes past you reduces your score... evil!! I think I'm going to have to get myself an Intellivision again.

A few years back I wrote my own shmup using a language called DIV and I based it on Astrosmash, except the rocks were my mate's head and there were curry bonuses and stuff. I'll have to dig it out and see if I can get it running. Or maybe find a windows version of DIV if such a thing was ever made.

Cheers

A classic. Still an addictive score challenge to this day. Think I may dog out the old Inty later...

Space Shot is the western name of "The Shooter", which is a game in the Simple 1500 series.

Its an horizontal shmup with cheesy cut-scenes and average graphics.

I personally dont know why some people say its crap. The level design is not awesome, but its nice enough, and the game has very deep score mechanics. You can chain enemies with a specific weapon.. you also has a "dash" move, which can be used to destroy enemies. If you graze bullets with the dash move, you raise a multiplier, and you can keep dashing and grazing bullets for a big score.

I havent played for some time, but I think there is still more to the score mechanics (And its all documented in the manual AND ingame too). I remember you can finish level 1 with something around 60 thousand points if you dont play for scre, or 500 million if you do. (The score numbers is very much like the ones in Gigawing, heh :D). The game has a decent challenge, the controls are very spot-on, and its incredibly cheap!

At points it does feel like Thunderforce, but no Thunderforce game has score mechanics as cool as this.

And its a lot more better than Philosoma :)

There are some screenshots from level 1 here:

Funny story behind that... ^^;; I feel like a freakin' poser.... I own games for the Atari 2600, Intellivision, and Master System, but don't have any means of playing them. :( I basically got them dirt-cheap, saving them for when I eventually get ahold of the old systems. ^^;; Sorry for getting your hopes up. :(

Also, Space shot just had... terrible play control.. x____x The score mechanics were cool, but dashing around got me killed more often than not.

Its not the game's fault, you just suck :)

Just kidding, it took me a while to do it properly too. It needs practicing, you cant just go dashing like crazy. If your dash ends where an enemy or a bullet is standing, you are dead.

I bet if this game has good graphics and it wasnt sold so cheap (And maybe didnt had those stupid cut-scenes), it would be better regarded.
