Cave Story

Post by Super Mega C »

 Why the hell hasn't anyone told me how awsome this game is yet? Oh, sure a couple of you have posted about it from time to time enticing me to hunt it down at my leasure, but not a damn one of you came online and said "Dude! It's just what you've been waiting for.", or "Go get this now" I guess I'll forgive you slackers this time since you are the reason I did find out about it, but don't let it happen again. And for those of you that might not know, this is an awsome little game that looks like it was pulled right out of your favorite 16-bit system's ass. It's like a cross between metroid, blaster master (without the tank or overhead stages), and just a touch of faxandu. It was originaly a japanese game, but don't worry the first site I clicked on after doing a search landed me on the translation patch page and a link to the games download page. In all the whole thing comes out to about a meg and a half download. Plus it's free (I would have gladly paid for it) so you have no excuses. Go get it now. You'll hate yourselves (or at least be really disapointed) for it later if you don't.

It may be useful to post links...

Like the original game here: http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA022293 ... kutsu.html
And the translation patch here: http://agtp.romhack.net/doukutsu.html

Download the archive from the first link, unzip into its own directory. Run the exe from the second link, input in the directory where you unzipped the first. Then run "doukutsu.exe"

Yep, this game is my valentine. :P

I like how my suitemate kept asking me "How is this game good? It looks so shitty. It's worse than Mario."

I put this up at the insert credit boards. As a warning, there are SPOILERS, and some minor mistakes too (I'm pretty sure of it) but if you ever get stuck and don't know what the hell to do (which happens rarely) give it a look.

Now I just gotta work on my time, I know I can beat 12 minutes.

Small question. Can't you run VirtualPC on the Mac instead of being deprived of ever neat PC-centric gem that is made? Or VirtualPC doesn't work well?

I wanted to hear something like, "Cave and Atlus have agreed to release all their games on a "Cave Arcade Treasures" DVD, including non-butcherd North American releases!!!")

VirtualPC is pretty slow and sluggish on a G4 1.33ghz Powerbook (with 768mb of ram). It's kind of to be expected, since it has to emulate an x86 processor and all, but it still bites. Even Civilization II was choppy as hell.

bah why was i not informed about this now I can play it on a computer that isnt a P2 300. Hmm wonder if the files the translation uses are the same.

update
Just copied the data directory from the pc version over the data directory in the mac version and it seems to have worked :D well nearly the place names seem to be in Japanese still but everything else is in english.

well played it from start to finish last night and it seems to work fine, few cosmetic faults like the sign text is a little off centre sometimes and place names are in japanese but works great otherwise. Heard there were some secrets so now off to find those.

Wise fwom your gwave.

So, I've been playing this on my PS Vita (thanks to the new exploit that allows you play PSP homebrew/isos), and I'm very impressed with it. However, I hate that there are multiple endings of which you can only get the best one if you do a very counter-intuitive thing at one point in the game (not talk to a certain character); that is bullshit.
Anyway, one of the best indy/homebrew games ever. If you haven't played it before, give it a try. The PSP version is freeware.

BTW, this thread is from the stone age; all bugs and translation problems have since been fixed.

I'd say the game's pacing problems are pretty heavy until the labyrinth, and afterward the game really picks up and gets good. And I agree that the method of getting the "real" ending is a case of poor development and lack of common-sense on pixel's part. You are only vaguely alluded to getting the real ending on the Balcony (IF I LIVE I'LL MAKE A BETTER JETPACK LOL), but no one in their right mind would ignore a plot-important character as he falls down a hole.

It is an evil twist.

Battle Kid is better anyway.
PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.

Yeah, that's poor design right there. I didn't want to post any spoilers, but it's probably better to know this one bit if you are new to the game, because except from starting over there is no way to go back (there is only one save-slot). I have reached the end of the game and I'm not inclined to play the whole thing again. Maybe I'll download a savegame from before the final boss by someone who made the right choice earlier on so I can see the "real" end.

The real ending (especially everything leading up to it) is worth the extra bullshit, IMO. I think you should avoid downloading a save just because there are a few smaller bits of dialogue throughout the game (when you're on the "right" path) that help flesh out the story/characters more if you care about that (and if you don't, then fuck it, I guess).

Since we're on topic of the PC and PSP version, has anyone played Cave Story+, Wiiware/DSiWare version, or 3DS yet? Personally I feel Pixel (along with Nicalis) is starting to milk the game by just adding a few features. I mean more power to them to expand public interest for the game, but really? I could see the argument that redoing the engine will benefit for future development of some indie games.

Also making to that true ending is a bitch, especially the "last" level. I haven't figured out the right stragety to have enough health to the boss.

Such a good game. I think I've played through it 3 times on my PSP. Once on the "bad" end, and twice with the "hell" end. Hell is definitely worth it, I tell ya hwat.

I have Cave Story+ and while the new features are okay (and it gave me the chance to support Pixel), I really really hate the new graphics and music. I also prefer the original fan translation. =/

I got the normal "sad" end, first, and the good ending second. Because after I beat the game, I knew I could have changed some things, but didn't know how. I don't feel bad looking up how to get the alternate, aka "Real" ending, because the counter-intuitive choices you have to make to get it make no sense.

Also, I have only played the Wii version, and that took years to fucking patch all the audio problems... and they still didn't fix them all. That was about when I said "fuck you" to WiiWare altogether.

Haha, that made me google to find out and I see you pawing around the Nintendoage forums.

"Hey, this bastard looks familiar.."

Anyway, shit. I would love to learn to learn how to compose like these guys. Just.. so lazy and websites are so shitty at educating. It's just a sequence of numbers, it can't be any harder than making pixel guys~!
