Well yeah I know you have a point, but I searched on Ebay for 6 year old scalers but nothing came up.

It's a little more complicated than this, but if you give yourself a little time - let's says 4 weeks - I guarantee you, that some nice ones will show up.

Without hopefully being a nuisance, can you suggest me a few models with the exact name?

Nostromo,
Perhaps starting a new thread may be more polite, especially considering this thread title and who started it.

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
Fagin and FutureMatt made great videos about the technique. SLG-in-a-box has the same performance:

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
Hello!
Fudoh explained that due to the 60Hz output of the scaler, it was not ideal for PAL systems.
Well, I have mostly PAL systems (Super Nintendo, NES, MD, MS, PS1 etc...), and I was considering buying the SLG in a box.
What is really the problem I might face with my 50Hz systems?
How much would the SLG in a box would cost without the enclosure?
Thanks!

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
On 50hz systems you will experience stuttering in scrolling due to the frame-rate conversion that has to be done, it's not terrible but it is there.

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
Thank you for your response.
Well, I think I won't like it!
Fluidity matters a lot to me.
But I think I could mod some of my systems to display 60Hz...
On one hand I am quite afraid about the quality of the whole thing when I read what Fudoh thinks of it (and GBS CGA to VGA scalers in general) but on the other hand when I see the result in the video Fagin did, I think I could live with it. And I really love the idea of having one box to do all.
As it would be my first VG scaler, I don't think I will be disappointed (if it comes without the case...).

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
I will be receiving one of these units in the very near future and intend in completing a very thorough testing and YouTube review.
There have been a number of "queries" raised around the GBS scaler (which this units utilises) and intend in putting those "queries" to the test.
I won't just be testing this unit in general terms, but will aim to stress test it (lol) with a full compliment of consoles and I also may introduce varied target devices (LCD & HDCRT), UK & NTSC consoles.
I don't use scalers / processors enough (although I have loads of them) to provide feedback easily on questions raised over time (after any initial review I complete), so if you guys have any specifics to do with this set-up that you would like me to cover for this review, please state them here and I'll do my best to cover them.

hey fagin, looking forward to the new review! I'm currently using the GBS scaler and an SLG right now, so all my questions have pretty much been answered.

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
Great initiative, Fagin! I watched a lot of your videos, learned a lot...
I am tempted by this unit.
I intend to plug in these systems to my videoprojector (Epson EH TW3500) :
- NES (Pal-rgb-ish)
- Master System 2 (Pal-rgb)
- Supergrafx (jap-sodipeng-rgb)
- Megadrive (Pal-rgb)
- SNES (Pal-rgb)
- N64 (pal-rgb-mod)
- ps2 slim (pal-rgb) would it be better to use the component of the SLGin-a-box? I guess it depends on the game...
- Dreamcast (pal-rgb) same question...
- X-box (pal-rgb)
- Gamecube (pal-rgb)
- Wii (pal-yuv)
All of my systems have official cables.
I am pretty new to all this but I understand that not everything would be perfect with just one scaler. In fact, some systems might not work with this one. What would interest me, is how these systems behave with the SLGin-a-box, so here are a few questions :
Is 50Hz a problem, for which system is it a problem?
What about the drop shadows? EDIT : just saw your video about HDbox pro, bad drop shadows on cheap scaler, too bad!
Do we need to set manually each time we switch from one sytem to another?
Also what would be cool is to explain which button and switch does what.
I intend to plug all those consoles at once via RGB scart manual switches. If you happen to have one, can you test it? I read that Fudoh had problems with some Dreamcast signal while it was not on anymore...
Please answer a few of those! Thanks a lot for your time!

Hi Jusensei,
Exactly the kind of response I was hoping for!
I will see what I can cover but most of that should certainly be part of the review.

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
Try the stuff I had problems with.
I tried to use the SLG portion on a Dreamcast VGA signal (original Sega VGA box) without running through the GBS. Got weird interferences. And even weirder: with the DC connected (but not in use) the SLG wouldn't work on any other signal, e.g. a PS2 running through the GBS.

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
Oh great!
It brings another question, can I plug several systems via RGB scart while I plug sevreal systems (let's say DC, Wii and PS2) via the component input?
Fudoh seems to warn us that it may cause problems. As I would like my set-up to have all of my systems ready to go at any time, I do care about this issue.
Thanks again!

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
Hey,
the inputs YUV and RGB SCART are configured via the built-in scaler pcb. Both of them can be plugged in at the same time.
For the VGA bypass input I`ve decided NOT to feed the scaler pcb, but to get the source signals directly without any artefacts. The integrated SLG3000 can handle the VGA bypass directly input. But the tradeoff is that the switching is not controlled by the scaler menu.

Testing is going well, but I still have plenty left to do..... already past 30mins on the video, so this will really be all encompassing.

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
I figure this is as good of place to put this as any.
Anyway, I recently got the SLG-in-a-box, and I'm having difficulty getting a stable picture to display over RGB scart. The screen has a vertical shake, and sometimes it gets worse if you so much as touch the scart plug. I'm currently using a US SNES with (i'm guessing) a raw sync scart cable.
A short video showing the vertical shake: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXdLABHDJ9c
Here's the config of the cable:

I'm thinking I have the wrong config for the scart cable. I could reconfigure it myself, it's just matter of knowing what wire needs to go to what pin. Component and VGA input works fine and as expected, but I'm just having issues with the scart. It's not so easy for me to troubleshoot as well, since scart isn't exactly common here in the US.

Hey,
yes, this cable has some elkos. Look at this
http://bencao74.blogspot.de/2011/11/eri ... 0-ohm.html

Take 75Ohms. This should do the trick.

Re: SLG-in-a-Box
Well that's what I thought, but I read that the NTSC SNES has a 1V DC offset on the rgb lines, thus requiring the capacitors.bencao74 wrote:Hey,

However, since I have the resistors on hand anyway, I'll try it out later and see if it fixes my issue. Thanks. It is also recommended that you use a normal NTSC SNES RGB cable, i.e. one with 220uF capacitors inside on the Red, Green, and Blue lines (+ leg towards console, - leg towards display) The capacitors are usually already inside any Nintendo Scart cable you buy, but its always wise to double check. The capacitors are there to remove the 1V DC offset in the RGB signal - although many TV/Monitors will still display the RGB picture fine without them they are strongly recommended to help prevent any damage occuring to less tolerant displays.

Pass thru is 100% fine on the current revision (version that is publicly available) I have received. I'm awaiting the latest board revision for testing (yet to be released I think) to put that through it's paces and round off the exercise.

Hey,
I`m currently in the second hardware revision for the master control board. I removed some parts which was not needed anymore and simplified the wiring layout. Second I`ve moved one of the DSUBhd connectors some mm to the left. There was no change in interface pinouts and function.
Have fun
