STGT'12 Week 1 & 2 discussion (Strikers '99 & V-V)

Post by Aquas »

Hey folks. I forgot to make the discussion thread for Strikers as I usually do for STGT. This thread will combine Strikers and V-V for discussion.

Discuss strategies, turn out, general thoughts on (games,) how it went for you, results, drama etc.

Strikers 99 is cool but I had a mission to 1cc Plus Alpha this week instead and put off any substantial effort I may have put in. With that aside, I'm a bit more excited for V-V. If only because it has a power-up bar.

Shit yes, a game I can run at full speed with save states and replay recording! I've played some of this and it is Pretty Fun. The sheer length of stages will be hard to get used to after S99 though...

Also, V-V has rank. Do not fully power up plzkthx.

What version of MAME are people playing V-V on? Neither shmupmame has sound.

Is the Genesis version acceptible?

No chance. Squashed screen and adjusted difficulty means it's a no fly zone.

It looks like working sound landed in 0.141u1.

Best idea: use a modern MAME version (with the no-buffer patch if you really care about the sprite buffer "lag")

Yes, because that works on anything other than Windows, and has sound for V-V.

Using 0.146u4. It has sound.

One frame of buffer isn't that bad for me. It could be worse, it could be Daioh (3 frames at best) or Rolling Thunder 1 and 2 (5 frames--not a shmup but you still see where I'm coming from).

Also, seconding this:

...as I learned the hard way. And promptly forgot on a subsequent run when I decided to maxpower again.

Grind Stormer unfortunately is to V-V what Batsugun Special is to Batsugun.
It's completely different and thus not eligible for the tourney.

I myself have been using MamePlus 0.146 for V-V. It has the sound and the music.

EDIT

Can you or someone else maybe upload a compiled exe with this patch applied?
I'm really not good with code.

Well my Strikers result was as awful as I had predicted. There were a couple of days where I couldn't really play but even those wouldn't have made a difference.

I'm pretty unfamiliar with V-V but I'm hoping a lot of other people are too.

Is there a preferred weapon for general use on V-V? Or do you have to keep switching?

No expert, but from what I've seen regular shot - usually in laser form - is preferred throughout.

Personally, I'm loving the missiles. They rip through everything, and you can get one away from Max power without any real diminished damage potential. When you're at Max power the rank really seems to go up (the stage 2 boss's six destroyable circular turrets fire much larger balls when the rank is high it seems).

Stage 2 boss is stupid and long when using laser, and I don't like stupid and long things.

Don't power up fully. That will solve the problem.

Stage 3 is gonna take a while to get down...lots of powerup crystals to chase after and after a few point carrier targets there's a screen blanket of popcorn, so you (probably) have to remember to open up the laser to a fan spread before you even see them. No idea if going after the crystals for the stage "Perfect!" bonus is worth letting up off the point carrier targets.

You shouldn't be letting them get any shots off. With plain ol' shot upgrades below max power you can still destroy them with little problem. There's little reason to use anything but a wide spread shot against that level 2 boss after the opening right-angle homing laser volley.

Really liked Strikers 1999. It's like 1945 II with less stupidity, though the ships in general are significantly weaker. Too bad I couldn't play much Saturday and Sunday because I was close to the 1CC. I'll probably keep playing that instead of V-V, which I can't stand.

it's obviously worth it, you get a special bonus after you get a no miss + full crystals on the six stages of the first loop, and another one if you perfect the whole game at the end of the second loop

I was just saying they were more a good indication of your current rank if you delay killing them and let them fire. You can easily kill them off without them getting a chance to shoot normally, though.

How much is the special full crystal bonus worth? Around stage 3 I've been ignoring crystals so it remains on the Shields segment in case I get hit and need to quickly re-apply shields.
