Yep, Gokudo was the show that gives the middle finger to all medieval/fantasy shows that were booming in the mid to late 90s. Love it lots.

Basically, recomend me a 90's/80's anime to see what this thread is all about.
Here are a few OAV series I love, which I have recommended here many times before:

Record Of Lodoss War (13 OAV episodes): I cannot recommend it enough. Sure, the colours are faded and there are too many shades of green and brown used in the colour palette throughout, but it is a solid series, borrowing heavily from D&D. Look for Urushihara Satoshi's name on the guest director credits (yep, he also did one for BubbleGum Crisis) 8)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2vxlZkfW-Y

Kyuuketsuki Miyu (4 OAV episodes): I love Hirano Toshihiro's designs. He also did Iczer, so that's pretty much the style I am referring to. The animation quality is a bit choppy, but it's pretty much all hand drawn - and the colours are fairly bright for a gothic-themed story. Actually, this is the sort of animation I love the most for its smoothness in look and ability to retain the distinct style of its author, unlike the garbage/plain/generic rotoscoped/CG designs of today which are indistinguishable from each other. Lastly, the music by Kawai Kenji and sound FX are some of the best I have heard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-HCMxsSFWs

Kimagure Orange Road (8 OAV episodes and one feature): A harem-themed anime that actually gets it right. It's also one of the raer instances where the anime may be better than the manga depending on which angle of the story you like a) in the manga, Kyosuke is a two-timer who leads on one of the main characters or b) in the anime, Kyosuke secretly likes one girl, but cannot confess to her, while the other makes it obvious she likes him. In either one, Kyosuke is not a total wuss the way main male characters are in these kinds of stories (modern animu with the same theme is virtually unwatchable). Same deal here: the series was tied to some excellent Pop music 8)

Takada Akemi (PatLabor) did a lot of the video and album cover illustrations. I love that style. I haven't seen anything like it since then.

These aired around the same time.

Just watch out which Kimagure Orange Road movie you watch

I'm not a fan of the OVA myself. It's too different than the original series. I couldn't even finish it. First two episodes are full of ghosts, kidnappings, gangsters and nonsense. :? I want some love-triangles, goddammit.

Kimagure Orange Road's final OAV episode is heart-breaking.
("I Want To Go Back To That Day")

Few harem animes had the stones to have the protagonist choose.

^Too true. Not many animes show the dirty side of love much like this one. A fantastic, bittersweet ending. :D

Ironically, Strawberry Panic was a bit like that, except it took about 25 non-eventful episodes and a ton of moe nonsense to get used to the setting and characters hahaha. Unbelievable that I'd think that show was one of the better modern series 8)

Possible slowpoke here, but has anyone here read Otogi Matsuri and Btooom? They're Joker Jun's own works and they're pretty solid action series, even though they're not exactly the most original thing out there. I especially like Otogi Matsuri, lots of wild fights, (with real repercussions!) and the monster designs are all top notch. Such a shame the translators are being so slow with it, seeing as it's been finished for 4 years now...

On an unrelated note, I finally gave Kaiji a chance after listening to the hype for so long and holy balls is it ever absurd. I don't even know why these dudes are crying sometimes, but I often end up joining the villain's laughter because of it. Painfully dragged out also, but I was expecting that. I think this anime qualifies as moe even moreso than most moe shows.

Yeah, I read Otogi Matsuri a while ago (well, "read" - several volumes weren't translated at the time, but it wasn't hard to work out the gist of things). Pretty fun series - avid fans of Cat Spider will be pleased to see him Ruin Some Guy's Shit.

I heard School Days is like this as well. I've been told to watch it just for the ending.

I've seen School Days and found the ending not to be worth it, really. Its premise is delivered unusually and there's the twist ending, but what goes inbetween is average at best and reeks of bad eroge more than anything else I've seen to date.

From what I understand, the ending is just a shocking twist, it doesn't build up to it at all, things just abruptly go to hell.

The visual novel handles it a lot better, as I hear. (Which JAST USA is selling now, I think.)

sorry, I don't know what a 'visual novel' is - is it the same thing as a 'graphic novel' (i.e. a large-ish comic book?)...

That'd probably do a much better job describing than I would. Some are more like adventure games: Yu-No, Snatcher, Phoenix Wright, etc, while others are more of an "interactive" comic. Bible Black is a good example of the latter--albeit a nasty one

Yes. FM Towns (a.k.a. "Marty") had a ton of those, but, then, almost every Japanese console and computer had a line-up of VNs. By extension, Dating Sims are almost on that level, except they require a bit more interaction from the player and some - if not, complete - fluency in Japanese 8)

The only adult slice-of-life I'd watch would be Dokyusei, which was animated by Yoshimoto Kinji (Urushihara Satoshi's assistant in Earth Works studio). It also happens to be a series of most excellent Dating Sims - perverted, yet entertaining and surprisingly well-drawn 8)

Oh god. We could probably sit here and quote it for hours.

I love how in every eroge "love juices" and "special spots" are mentioned; yet, in another seen you'll fill a girl up with semen. Ohhhhhh, formalities.

Speaking as someone who went into it on a pure whim, lemme say the one thing that this show really could have benifited from: fanservice. Lots and lots of it, all over the place. It's like they fucking hated their viewers by not showing a single pantyshot or bounce while they were in zero gravity, goddamn. ಥ_ಥ

Man, Okabe's dub voice makes him sound more sinister than stupid. Maybe it'll work out better that way...? There's also going to be a movie coming out sometime this year.
Might check it out even though I don't see it going anywhere.

I'm doing my usual 'make wallpapers from anime printscreens' thing and going through Bubblegum Crisis and looking at this stuff so closely, I think one of the things that really makes it stand out quality wise is the shading/shadowing and in particular the 'highlights'. There's a really high attention to detail in those (say when it shows the Genom factory robots at the start of 3 (Blow Up) and it shows the highlights on them from sparks etc.), it just makes everything feel so much more alive or something. Also obviously the Knight Sabers themselves are highlighted/shinied (!) so well, there's that scene where literally all you see is a highlight going across one of their helmets and it's just so well done, couple that with a great story and incredible music and I don't know, I'm just blown away by Bubblegum Crisis overall.
