Basically, recomend me a 90's/80's anime to see what this thread is all about.
Here are a few OAV series I love, which I have recommended here many times before:
Record Of Lodoss War (13 OAV episodes): I cannot recommend it enough. Sure, the colours are faded and there are too many shades of green and brown used in the colour palette throughout, but it is a solid series, borrowing heavily from D&D. Look for Urushihara Satoshi's name on the guest director credits (yep, he also did one for
BubbleGum Crisis)

Kyuuketsuki Miyu (4 OAV episodes): I love Hirano Toshihiro's designs. He also did
Iczer, so that's pretty much the style I am referring to. The animation quality is a bit choppy, but it's pretty much all hand drawn - and the colours are fairly bright for a gothic-themed story. Actually, this is the sort of animation I love the most for its smoothness in look and ability to retain the distinct style of its author, unlike the garbage/plain/generic rotoscoped/CG designs of today which are indistinguishable from each other. Lastly, the music by Kawai Kenji and sound FX are some of the best I have heard.

Kimagure Orange Road (8 OAV episodes and one feature): A harem-themed anime that actually gets it right. It's also one of the raer instances where the anime may be better than the manga depending on which angle of the story you like a) in the manga, Kyosuke is a two-timer who leads on one of the main characters or b) in the anime, Kyosuke secretly likes one girl, but cannot confess to her, while the other makes it obvious she likes him. In either one, Kyosuke is not a total wuss the way main male characters are in these kinds of stories (modern animu with the same theme is virtually unwatchable). Same deal here: the series was tied to some excellent Pop music

Takada Akemi (
PatLabor) did a lot of the video and album cover illustrations. I love that style. I haven't seen anything like it since then.
