I wouldn't mind seeing something in the same world as "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" (book didn't seem quite as dark as the BR movie), but detached from the BR chars n plot we are well saturated with.MX7 wrote:Hey, here's an idea. Why doesn't Ridley Scott make a new science fiction film unconnected to any existing franchise? Can even be a gritty, rainy dystopian noir with androids or whatever, but with a pretty much completely new plot. Genre fans would be delighted to be able to chuck themselves into a whole new world, and to rope in casual film fans you can shove 'From the director of Blade Runner, Alien and lots of shit films too'. Keep costs down by hiring unknowns as actors and use no CG.
This is a really good point. Alien and BR both have top notch soundtracks. Prometheus doesn't. A lot of modern films don't.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Makes you wonder whom will do the cool electronic score for this new BR flick?

Just get Vangelis to do it. The BR score hasn't really aged, and I'm sure everyone would welcome more of the same.CMoon wrote:This is a really good point. Actually, a lot of sci fi writers from that era were heavy into drugs; L Ron Hubbard, for example, was also heavy into amphetamines and alcohol; good sci fi writer, apparently even better cult creator. Although if you read his fiction, its kind of funny the similarities you find to Scientology. The interesting thing about Scientology, especially if you are familiar with heavy amphetamine use, is how easy it is to relate to, or at least understand the headspace that brings about that kind of thinking, the ideas and stuff behind it, as it's totally the kind of shit you come up with after a week or so( or more) with no sleep and your mind racing on uppers. I recall coming up with similar theories and ideas in my younger days when using.CMoon wrote:Well, PKD pretty much was continuously on amphetamines. I agree a lot of his novels are a hard go because of it, though ironically one of his best (Valis) seemed to require him to go nearly insane before he could write it. Also, Do Androids Dream seems pretty decent compared to a lot of others--and there are some pretty interesting themes in there that never make it into the film. All in all though I think its PKD's short stories that really shine and recommend these before bothering with the books.

I wouldn't either, I was simply illustrating my point about amphetamines and got a bit distracted.CMoon wrote:Not trying to start shit here, but I wouldn't put L Ron Hubbard anywhere near the league of PKDick. Doesn't invalidate your argument, your undoubtedly right. Just wanted the opportunity to say (IMO) what a shit sci-fi author LRon was.

I read either all or most of the Mission Earth series and thought it was junk. That's my take from reading it back in HS. Haven't bothered reading more.jonny5 wrote: That being said, how much L Ron Hubbard have you read?Dianetics was particularly captivating![]()
. I kid, but seriously, the Mission Earth series was pretty bad ass, same goes for Battlefield Earth, albeit longwinded.

In all fairness, I haven't read it in at least 15 years. Bit of a time investment to read all 10 volumes again at this point though.CMoon wrote:I read either all or most of the Mission Earth series and thought it was junk. Don't know how you have the patience to read that much junk!CMoon wrote: I read either all or most of the Mission Earth series and thought it was junk. That's my take from reading it back in HS. Haven't bothered reading more.

I was in HS; I read a lot of junk. Not to say I don't read junk now, but its stuff I've come to terms with (IE enjoying the genre at the expense of 'good writing/storytelling'.)Skykid wrote:Don't know how you have the patience to read that much junk!CMoon wrote: I read either all or most of the Mission Earth series and thought it was junk. You seem like an avid book reader CMoon, so as a favour from one lover of literature to another: go and find a book of short stories called 'The Magic Man' by Charles Beaumont. Don't think just get it, promise you won't regret it!CMoon wrote:I was in HS; I read a lot of junk. That's what the internets told me. Although honestly I was hoping to see it a little just to see how awful it could become, and further prove my new mantra: The 80's Were Better. We really need a Kenny Powers video sequence to hit it home.Randorama wrote: And, which project got killed a fourth time, GP? Akira? Please say so!

You have to read that particular volume before you die, so Magic Man or bust for a starter. Found it on Amazon for you for $4 bucks, worth fifty times that in literary value, and you also get that nostalgic smell of 1965 paper.CMoon wrote:Would you recommend anything by Beaumont or just that particular volume?
