Are you people complaining that Dick wrote like he was always on drugs, by chance?

And, which project got killed a fourth time, GP? Akira? Please say so!

Well, PKD pretty much was continuously on amphetamines. I agree a lot of his novels are a hard go because of it, though ironically one of his best (Valis) seemed to require him to go nearly insane before he could write it. Also, Do Androids Dream seems pretty decent compared to a lot of others--and there are some pretty interesting themes in there that never make it into the film. All in all though I think its PKD's short stories that really shine and recommend these before bothering with the books.

Casablanca or Citizen Kane have not been remade. It should be the same with Blade Runner. Of course, it's all about the money. Scott will probably fumble this one as well.

Makes you wonder whom will do the cool electronic score for this new BR flick?

MX7 wrote:Hey, here's an idea. Why doesn't Ridley Scott make a new science fiction film unconnected to any existing franchise? Can even be a gritty, rainy dystopian noir with androids or whatever, but with a pretty much completely new plot. Genre fans would be delighted to be able to chuck themselves into a whole new world, and to rope in casual film fans you can shove 'From the director of Blade Runner, Alien and lots of shit films too'. Keep costs down by hiring unknowns as actors and use no CG.
I wouldn't mind seeing something in the same world as "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" (book didn't seem quite as dark as the BR movie), but detached from the BR chars n plot we are well saturated with.

That'd be quite a different sci-fi film if Scott does adapt that Dick novel for the big screen.

This is a really good point. Alien and BR both have top notch soundtracks. Prometheus doesn't. A lot of modern films don't.

Just get Vangelis to do it. The BR score hasn't really aged, and I'm sure everyone would welcome more of the same.

Actually, a lot of sci fi writers from that era were heavy into drugs; L Ron Hubbard, for example, was also heavy into amphetamines and alcohol; good sci fi writer, apparently even better cult creator. Although if you read his fiction, its kind of funny the similarities you find to Scientology. The interesting thing about Scientology, especially if you are familiar with heavy amphetamine use, is how easy it is to relate to, or at least understand the headspace that brings about that kind of thinking, the ideas and stuff behind it, as it's totally the kind of shit you come up with after a week or so( or more) with no sleep and your mind racing on uppers. I recall coming up with similar theories and ideas in my younger days when using.

Sorry for the total OT(sort of)

But ya, PKD is an awesome writer!! Naysayers need to STFU!!

For this, sequel= meh for me; re-make= blarghhhhh!!!

Not trying to start shit here, but I wouldn't put L Ron Hubbard anywhere near the league of PKDick. Doesn't invalidate your argument, your undoubtedly right. Just wanted the opportunity to say (IMO) what a shit sci-fi author LRon was.

I have a book by L.Ron and when I flipped to a random section, there was an extended scene with a black guy speaking in ebonics about a house fire that he doesn't seem too worried about.

The first pages are a glossary of science fictiony terms and names :x

I'd rather Scott take on the directing job for Neuromancer instead of the fucking hack that is apparently holding the job now...

I wouldn't either, I was simply illustrating my point about amphetamines and got a bit distracted.

That being said, how much L Ron Hubbard have you read?Dianetics was particularly captivating   . I kid, but seriously, the Mission Earth series was pretty bad ass, same goes for Battlefield Earth, albeit longwinded. His older stuff like Ol' Doc Methusaleh was pretty decent too. I think what I liked most about his writing was how batshit crazy it could go out of nowhere, and especially in the Mission Earth series, how violent and downright cringe worthy it could get.

If you are at all familiar with scientology, you will understand why he puts glossaries in his books; misunderstood words( and how to use a dictionary) and how they affect what you read are core themes of scientology, and pretty much the first thing they teach.

I read either all or most of the Mission Earth series and thought it was junk. That's my take from reading it back in HS. Haven't bothered reading more.

In all fairness, I haven't read it in at least 15 years. Bit of a time investment to read all 10 volumes again at this point though.

Don't know how you have the patience to read that much junk!

I read two chapters of The Davinci Code and took it to the charity shop. Someone at work a few years back gave me a book called 'Contest', a sci-fi novel by Matthew Reilly who had self-published before achieving success.

I only managed about a hundred pages before defeat, it was pretty shambolic.

I was in HS; I read a lot of junk. Not to say I don't read junk now, but its stuff I've come to terms with (IE enjoying the genre at the expense of 'good writing/storytelling'.)

You seem like an avid book reader CMoon, so as a favour from one lover of literature to another: go and find a book of short stories called 'The Magic Man' by Charles Beaumont. Don't think just get it, promise you won't regret it!

Would you recommend anything by Beaumont or just that particular volume? This book has the misfortune of being out of print in the US but I have some pdfs of his work in a general cache of sci I downloaded some time ago.

I do appreciate the recommendations. Yeah, I read a fair amount but most of it I would like to throw back. Still, I'd rather read fiction and be disappointed than give up the pursuit. Sci Fi itself is particularly hard. Not many can do it well.

That's what the internets told me. Although honestly I was hoping to see it a little just to see how awful it could become, and further prove my new mantra: The 80's Were Better. We really need a Kenny Powers video sequence to hit it home.

You have to read that particular volume before you die, so Magic Man or bust for a starter. Found it on Amazon for you for $4 bucks, worth fifty times that in literary value, and you also get that nostalgic smell of 1965 paper.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Magic-Other-S ... 958&sr=8-2

Beaumont is an unsung genius of fantasy fiction. I've never encountered an author who appears to successfully recreate his style with every new story yet maintains such equal brilliance between them. There are a couple in The Magic Man that became Twilight Zone episodes too (he was responsible for some of the series best remembered screenplays), but most are too dark to be televised. He's got a twisted edge, but the stories are really wonderful - some staggeringly good.

Look at the bright side of Scott doing this movie. We will have justification for a whole onslaught of him 69'ing George Lucas jokes at our finger tips.

Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford are slated to star in the upcoming Blade Runner 2 movie, a true sequel to the original 1982 sci-fi cult flick. Initial filming is slated to begin in the summer of 2016 and the theatrical release hasn't been determined as of yet. Mr. Ford will reprise his role as Richard Deckard in this much-hyped sequel (that takes place some possible 30 or so years later in the far future). It's about damn time it got "greenlit"! The further story between the humans and the Replicants is still on-going. It'll be interesting to see if the audience could look at what a Replicant factory looks like (or could they be based "Off World" considering that they're illegal on Earth back in 2019).

Prometheus 2 sequel under the name of Alien: Coventry is the official title and is slated for a 2017 theatrical release.

Matthew McConaughey is slated for top billing in Stephen King's upcoming The Dark Tower saga.
