Argh, ign.com is blocked from my work computer. Would somebody be willing to summarize the news, please?

If it's 2D gameplay, I can only imagine how nice this is gonna look.

Guess I'm getting a PS3 then.

Wow, this is huge. I wonder if this is going to come states-side? I'm really not sure I'll bother buying a US PS3, but it would seem that a Japanese PS3 is going to be a must-have at some point.

Thanks! I was having trouble reading the topic title.[/sarcasm]

I was looking for anything the article said beyond "Gradius for PS3." Did it give developer details, confirm that it would be sidescrolling, or anything else?

Here's what it says:
"Some of the most exciting news to come out of the 2005 Tokyo Game Show today was that Konami is already developing a brand new PlayStation 3 shooter in its always-popular Gradius franchise. Though no other details about the game were given, Sony Computer Entertainment did confirm that the game exists and that it's coming for the company's highly sought-after system.

In case you've been living under a rock for the last 20 years, Gradius is Konami's highly successful side-scrolling space shooter franchise that's wowed us with its consistently beautiful graphics and high-end challenges.

Needless to say, we want to play Gradius PS3 very, very badly. Hopefully we'll get our chance sometime soon."

God, please let it be 2D *prays*. If so, I'll be needing a PS3 afterall.

Classic Nintendo cross-shaped d-pad and two fire buttons? I think it'll do just fine for most shooters.

Sony again in pole position when it comes to shmups.

PSP now is the only sony hardware that did not see a Gradius title in its early months. *hint for konami* try to fix this.

Holy **** I seriously creamed my pants! This is the greatest news ever. I'm going to be the best player in this one too :D

So does anyone have any visions of this new sequel? Maybe this time they'll have the multiple Vic Viper -models, which was a scrapped idea for Gradius V. I also wonder if they'll bring Moais back. Maybe even Konami themselves where unsatisfied for the excessive Treasure/Ikaruga influence in Gradius V and decided to make a more loyal game this time.

Can't wait for the first screenshots.

I for one hope that they take the opportunity to at least attempt to address some of the perennial problems with the series...dull, hard-to-see bullets, extremely tough death recovery (in spots), regular enemies (and their bullets) able to invisibly pass through obstacles and sneak kill you, slow fire rate...Treasure addressed some of them, though admittedly G5 didn't quite feel like a "pure" Gradius...in any event, it is good news to hear about a (hopefully!) traditional shmup in the next generation. Maybe my hopes are too high, heh.

Err, they did stick to those elements for like twenty years. Perhaps they don't see them as flaws?

2 teraflops of computing power is incredible overkill for a new Gradius game. I can't wait.

Heh, I don't want to turn this into an argument over the essence of Gradius itself or anything, but at least for me, those same elements really hobble the series, game after game...others obviously disagree, but the thing that really leaves me flabbergasted is that, for the most part, they're really "basic" things, that numerous other shmups have managed to completely surpass as "issues"...it wouldn't take a heck of a lot of tweaking to change them, at least so it would seem. As always, though, it's just personal preference talking...

Meh, I'll wait for more details to get too excited. We might just get a repeat of the PS2 launch with Gradius III+IV.

Still, a good sign for PS3. Now we just need Cave, G.Rev, etc. to get on board and quit being delusional thinking the Japanese will support X360.

I bought a PS2 specially for Gradius V. After initially beeing wowed by it, I soon found out it wasn't even near being my fav Gradius game (au contraire).

I'll try and get to play this when it comes out, but no way in hell I am going to by the PS3 just for this..
