Shmup... visual novels?

Post by cj iwakura »

So after many years of waiting, I finally grabbed this off Ebay:

Image

Shikigami no Shiro: Nanayozuki Gensoukyoku. Exactly as the thread title implies, this is a visual novel/shmup hybrid based in the SnS universe.

It's like Alfa System made this just for me.

I'll post actual impressions once I own it, but until then, any other examples of this hybrid to end all effed up hybrids?

There's this Flash thing here:

You'll be shocked to learn that it is terrible.

Is there any scoring at all in the shmup segments?

I hear the console versions of Mamoru-kun have a lot of visual novel content. As does the doujin game Valhellio.

Always wanted to play the shiki vn, too bad it'll likely never be translated though.

If anyone's going to do it, may as well be me.

And from what I can gleam from youtube vids, this isn't a scoring game, just survival.

I could be wrong though.

I know Tsukiko is the main antagonist for some reason.

Yes, Mamoru-kun has a fairly involved Story mode. I love the game but find the characters too annoying to really care about unfortunately.

One shooter that really integrated story/visual novel well is Senko no Ronde DUO which has an outstanding Story Mode. You follow the story along the path and battle certain characters that appear in certain scenes. The story branches at certain points but you can come back and follow up the other paths later on.

Recently there was a Senko no Ronde novel released in Japan which I picked up and read through. It was actually really good. I think anybody that likes sci-fi would really be into it. It's a shame the series' chances in the west ended with Ubisoft's rather disappointing localization of the first game, because the sequel really is so much better.

I guess it might also be worth mentioning Instant Brain in this thread, even though it's not a shooter itself you can unlock Dodonpachi in it.

What? Ubisoft did a fine job with the localization, aside from "WarTech" and the lack of DLC. I think the real problem is that it didn't sell. I got my copy for $10 less than a year after the US release.

Can you imagine how awful a Senko no Ronde dub would have been during gameplay? Thankfully they spared us that.

I remember Triggerheart Exelica Enhanced was labeled as a visual novel on a videogames sales site.

Agreed on DUO's story mode. It was really fun while it lasted. Pity that its inclusion didn't help the game's sales.

At what point does the novel take place? Before Senko 1, after DUO, in between the two?

I think a good strategy for G.rev to increase Senko's popularity would be to release a multi-volume manga based on the series. If the manga is good/popular enough, it could lead to an anime.

I think what adversity1 was referring to was the title-change, the cover, and the very poor marketing. The pricetag definitely didn't help, but they could have included extras to make it a more appealing purchase (artbook, sound track, etc), like what Aksys and Atlus do for localized releases.

Not really a "VN" sort of thing, but the "Saturn Mode" of Game Tengoku on (duh) Saturn includes some pretty lengthy dialogue sections between stages - I have no idea what anyone's saying, but whatever it is there's lots of it!

I'm sure there are other console-exclusive "Story" modes like that, though I'm not sure they're really what you're looking for.

Instruction manual is full color, with English names. Will get pics later.

Guess who's back.

Back again.

Roger's back.

Hide your men.

The story to this is hard to grasp with my cursory knowledge of Japanese, but far as I can tell, it's Kohtaro's wacky adventures in Shikigami land whilst trying to woo either Tsukiko, Sayo, or... uh, both.
(Team Tsukiko present.)

The only two new characters appear to be the moe girl and her cool older brother companion(and some weird younger brother hanging around Kohtaro), but I'll keep you informed.

It started out with action stuff, some military squad trying to gun down Gennojo, then it rapidly turned into a harem anime.

I'm wondering when the shmup stuff kicks in.
