Your favorite games, this entire gen?
Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
If shmups count, Akai Katana. If they don't, Tekken 6.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
If we're going on just sheer playtime, I'd say mine would have to be either Disgaea 4, Skyrim or Borderlands (all of which have their flaws, but we're talking favorites, not best overall.) If we're going on games I enjoyed the most while I played them, I might have to go with either the Forza series (there's been 3 of them in this generation, so I think it's best to just group them together) or the two Ratchet and Clank Future games.
I hear Demon Souls and Dark Souls mentioned a lot, but I suspect that these are games that I'm not ever going to play, mostly because with my really terrible gaming skills I suspect that attempts to play these would quickly devolve into controller smashing.

Unless I'm going to be allowed Resi 4: Wii Edition or Metroid Prime Trilogy, it's going to have to be Xenoblade. It's been a long time since a game really pulled me in like that did - Mass Effect managed it with the story but not the third rate third person gameplay.
I also seem to have gotten way more fun out of Resi: Darkside Chronicles and Alpha Protocol than anyone who reviewed them did.

I own both. I just like Dark Souls a bit better.Friendly wrote:Sounds like most (all?) people here who say Dark Souls haven't played Demon's Souls.

Man, with all the rereleases on XBLA and all you could shoehorn quite a few things in here. Sticking purely with this gen though, I'd say:
Crackdown: Because it made me realize just why I'd enjoyed the GTA games initially, and how stale they'd gotten. One-note? Yep. Repetative? Yep. It was also the most fluid, over-the-top, and explosive sandbox games ever to be created, and second only to Mario Sunshine in being a really addictive and fluid 3D platformer.
FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage: Wonky physics aside, it was pure, pure fun.
Deus Ex: HR: After such a long wait, the fact that it managed not be to a huge disappointment was a great surprise. The fact that I found it a truly worthy sequel was beyond anything I'd hoped for.
WipeOut HD: Just amazing. Tied with F-Zero GX for best racing game ever.

Ryu ga Gotoku: Kenzan closely followed by Dark Souls, Demon`s Souls and Ryu ga Gotoku 3.
Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
I bought it fully expecting to be disappointed but I was playing it and thinking 'hey! I'm actually playing a good videogame for a change' It had it's share of faults, the boss battles in particular but overall it was a really good game. It's also one of the few games released in the last few years with a good hard mode that doesn't just turn enemies into bullet sponges.Marc wrote:Deus Ex: HR: After such a long wait, the fact that it managed not be to a huge disappointment was a great surprise. If Dark Souls hadn't come out it would have been my favourite game of last year.

You gotta count shoot-'em-ups 'cause I was about to say Eschatos or Shooting Love 20XX
I seriously cannot think of any game in this generation of consoles that I have enjoyed as much as those two, nor as much as I enjoyed non-shoot'-'em-ups from previous gen consoles. Hell, at this point, I'm gonna say Beautiful Katamari for the 360, although the previous versions for the PS2 were more fun (I have two for the PS2 and one for the PSP).

I'm surprised I chose this one since I generally dislike 3D graphics and will always prefer 2D

Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure is a top candidate for me if the DS is included in the running...on non-portables, I'd hafta think about it a bit more.Friendly wrote:That's very hard to answer, especially if you take Nintendo DS into consideration. There are many excellent (mostly 2D) games for the system.
Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
1. Half-Life 2 (Orange Box)
2. Mario Galaxy 2
Hmm.. I was gonna make a list, but those two shine so much brighter than the rest. Maybe throw Mass Effect 2 & Dark Souls as honorable mentions.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
I only dip into modern gen, non-shumps a couple of times a year, so haven't experienced a great deal. However, games that really stood out for me personally:
RE4 (Wii)
Fallout 3 (X360)
HL2 (PC) <-- counts as this gen?
LA Noire was a lot of fun, but after the story's conclusion I couldn't be arsed to revisit it. Think I scraped through with pathetic ranks on half the cases anyway.
I started Bioshock, got about half way through, and found it all too tedious to continue. Then again, I paid absolutely no attention to the story, for much of the time playing it with the sound low or off.
Guess I've dropped to a couple of notches below casual gamer.

I agree.Friendly wrote:Sounds like most (all?) people here who say Dark Souls haven't played Demon's Souls.
I can't quite place my finger on it because they are VERY similar but something about Demons souls makes me perfer it.
I don't think I could give an absolute favourite but this would be one of them, along with Valkyria Chronicles and probably Fallout 3. I'm enjoying The legend of Grimrock at the moment but by no means is it a contender for game of the Gen.
The universe is neither hostile nor friendly, simply indifferent.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
Dark Souls was the From Software Kings Field style game I wanted all along. I love exploring and finding secrets in a world that interlocks and feels complete, yet not so big there's vast areas of nothing interesting.
Demons Souls is more like a set of individual missions. It's still a good game but could have been much more.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
Half-Life 2 was a Xbox release, released before the Xbox 360 was even out. Not sure how you could possibly count it as this generation, without also including every port/remake as this generation.
I'm going with Valkyria Chronicles, but there's lots of competition, I think this generation is just as good as any other, but the good games are scattered over more platforms.

Street Fighter 4 series for me.
It was a joy getting to appreciate and become enthusiastic for a fighting game in a similar way that I have playing shoot'em'ups. Studying match-ups and regular training to stay sharp. I never quite expected I'd achieve a competitive level of play in a fighting game.
Now I'm learning King of Fighters XIII in earnest and it's fun.
It all goes with the arcade stick!

Resident Evil 5
top tier for best splitscreen-multiplayer of all time, very good in spite of the pisspoor storyline.
runners up (splitscreen multiplayer is my preferred state of playing) - gears of war & borderlands

Tough to say for me, I never can pick one. But I really enjoyed:
- Demon's Souls
- Spelunker HD (top PSN game by far)
- Gran Turismo 5 (only worth playing with a wheel)
Skyrim and Dark Souls would probably be in the list if I had played them.

Demon's Souls. Dark Souls is excellent too but it's gameplay was a little broken out of the package. I'm gonna play through it again soon, but I played Demon's after Dark and enjoyed Demon's much more. Dark Souls does have some really amazing environments though, like Ash Lake/Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith. God what a gauntlet of terror those places are. I still think that they pale in comparison to how well designed the entirety of Boletarian Palace from Demon's Souls is, but good stuff indeed.
Also I'm really in love with Time Crisis: Razing Storm.

You know, KOF13 should probably have been in my post, but since I don't have a copy of my own, I've only played it a bit against my friends.Aquas wrote:Street Fighter 4 series for me.

Great stuff, and it quickly topped 2002 as my favorite KOF.
I can't get behind Street Fighter 4 so much. I'd much rather play Third Strike [even though I am ass at that, and 2 of my friends are competitive level at it [so they consistently kick my ass]].
And I really need to pick up playing on a stick, I currently can't stand using anything other than a PS1 pad to play fighters...

Even went as far as getting a PSx->360 converter just so I could fight properly against them, the 360 pad almost made me hate KOF 13, hahaha.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
I've been nonplussed by almost everything this gen, and most of the rest I've wanted to play has been too expensive (and I don't have the systems, outside of PC that is). Still feeling smug about not buying any Bethesda Software games since the last Oblivion mod.

Quake Live (QL/Q3 is my favorite game of all time)
If that doesn't count as a current gen since it's basically Quake 3 then I'm not sure I could come up with an accurate list as numbers 2-10 change each week (since we aren't counting shmups).
