Your favorite games, this entire gen?
I thought this gen was sad as hell. That being said, it had some good games. What was your favorite(not counting shmups!)?
I'm gonna go with Valkyria Chronicles and Dark Souls, for a tie.
You?

Wii being the only "this gen" platform I own (even the PC is old), for now I say S&P2. Possibly because it is a lot like a 16-bit console game at heart. Bossess upon bosses.
I'm also rather fond of Metroid: Other M (only played it briefly, though), which seems like a game designed as if the PSX TPP action still rocked the house. You know, I'd like moving with one stick and aiming with another one better if it was done like in Apocalypse (starring Bruce Willis) or Gauntlet Dark Legacy (in the Robotron controls mode, literally called "Robotron" in the menu). No idea why those awesome ideas didn't catch on. Instead, Halo set the standards (sheesh, I played first person shooters on the PC with mouse & keyboard already and no, joypads don't do this kind of controlls nearly as well; overdone mouse acceleration in a number of recent first person shooters adding insult to injury). Have they really forgotten how to make mouse & keyboard controls well, or is there some petty conspiracy going?
Oh yes, I liked Burnout Paradise. The only "this gen" game that felt "next gen" to me, in a good way.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
Gonna have to say S&P2 probably. I just realized that nearly all of the games I've gotten in recent memory are from last gen.
If I had Split/Second, I might actually say that was my favorite, was playing that with a friend, so much fun.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
I think it'll be Dark Souls for me too. With Oblivion, Deus Ex Human Revolution and Battlefield Bad Company 2 following on behind it.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
Fallout 3
no game has pulled me in like Fallout 3 in quite a while.
Mass Effect series was a close 2nd

Sin and Punishment 2 was great. Definitely in my top 5.

Probably Super Street Fighter IV.
KOF XIII and the various BlazBlue iterations would be up there as well.
I enjoyed Marvel Vs Capcom 3/UMvC. Sin and Punishment 2 was pretty wild.
I don't dig all the 3D stuff, and I'm not excited in the slightest about nex-gen either, so I've gone back to 16-bit.
You know, where the gameplay is.

That's very hard to answer, especially if you take Nintendo DS into consideration. There are many excellent (mostly 2D) games for the system.
Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
Easily Half Minute Hero on the psp. Been a long time since I had so much fun with a game.
Console-wise, probably Xenoblade or Mario Galaxy 2.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
Dark Souls for me. I didn't play Demon's Souls, so it was an experience like no other and one of the best games I've ever played. Following that, all the CAVE shooters as well as Left 4 Dead.
I think there's been a lot of good stuff out this gen, I just haven't got around to most of it yet and unfortunately still don't own a PS3 either.
Edit: Forgot to mention Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, amazing games, best 3D platformers I've played.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
Ninja Gaiden II is probably my favorite game of all time. Top 3 at least.
There have been lots of great games this gen, even when you exclude shumps. My top 10 would probably be something like: NG2, Street Fighter 4, Demon's & Dark Souls, Vanquish, Bayonetta, Ouendan 1 & 2, Wipeout HD & Fury, Hard Corps: Uprising, Catherine, and probably VF5FS if I can sink some real time into it. Maybe throw Shadowrun in there as well for [still] being the best FPS on console since Halo CE.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
It sounds like I should really open the copy of S&P2 that I have sitting on my shelf.
If I had to pick based on games that I would be most likely to revisit, I would probably say Muramasa: The Demon Blade. For two reasons:

- I didn't get the 'good' ending
- Fuck yeah - beautiful 2D beatemup set in feudal Japan!

I could have said Dark Souls, but I think it's Legend of Grimrock, for purely emotional reasons!

It warms my heart to see people loving S&P2...
for me: S&P2, bad company 2, jamestown, muramasa
I will get dark souls for PC. I still haven't played my copy of xenoblade, and haven't beaten skyward sword yet.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
Sin and Punishment 2. Topnotch gameplay married with perfect controls - Tresure alone pretty much justified Wii's existence. The amount of different ideas it throws at you in such a short time is just staggering, never growing stale or boring. And then there are the subtle references to other classic games... S&P2 feels like a game that shouldn't exist anymore considering the current state of the industry and that's saying a lot.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
You're right about this gen being terrible. The worst gen so far... I can't even really say something is my favorite as nothing stands out that much in my mind.
If the live / psn version of Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus R is made well and has decent online... probably that will be the saving grace for me, this console gen. That's still really sad, because GGAC was last console gen, and just an updated title with online would beat all the games that were made this gen.
Fuck dumbing down games / stream lining them to the masses.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
I also really loved S&P2, but I have not idea what to call my favourite game. Leaning towards Mega Man 9. Put a lot of hours in with that.

If we include recent PC games, then I might go with Team Fortress 2. That was probably the last game that really blew me away with how fun and new it was (new in the sense of fresh ideas in gameplay and aesthetics).

How did I forget that onedannnnn wrote: Left 4 Dead.

Had a lot of fun with that one as well, not so much the 2nd.

No shmups?
Hmm, I would guess either Europa Universalis III or Galactic Civilizations 2. Aside from shmups I'm not a big console player.
But I did play a lot on my fat DS in the train. I put many hours in the Disgaea DS version. Sadly I lost my DS. >.<

I'm gonna to go with Dark Souls too. Never got to play Demon's Souls and while I'd heard enough about it to know that it would be up my street and was hyped for Dark Souls I still didn't expect to be as engrossed by it as I was. Can't wait for the Artorias DLC. I also really enjoyed the Castlevania games on the DS. Having hard modes with level caps let me keep coming back to them. Order of Ecclesia was the best, the others have more notable flaws but they are still fun.
The problem with S&P2 is that it's in danger of flouting the non-shmup rule of this thread. Amazing game, though.

Re: Your favorite game, this entire gen?
I see Dark Souls mentioned several times. I'm sure its good, but at first glance of the 'dark' screenshots it appears to be guilty of the depressing dark colour palette that has plagued mainstream 3D games in the last 15 years.
This guy re-iterates what many people have said over the years: http://trustygamer.com/industry-thoughts/i-miss-color/
To be honest, I like bright cheery colours in video games. I like surrealism not realism. If I want to 'play' a movie, I'll watch a movie instead.
My favourite of this current gen....a 2D shoot'em up IBARA or Pork or if 2000 onwards is included in this gen

Sounds like most (all?) people here who say Dark Souls haven't played Demon's Souls.

DeadStorm Pirates.
Yeah, the game is just enjoyable, and I haven't got bored of it (unlike Time Crisis 4 and Razing Storm) even though I was world #1 on it
I haven't enjoyed a single fighting game this gen, so I'm also looking forward to GGXXACPlusR
