I recently picked up the Mega CD version w/o spinecard and have been playing it over the last couple of nights.
It's amazing really, just about any first gen 3D game throwing texture mapped polygons around seems to have aged badly, yet the ones with the flat shaded polys still look great. Ok, in Silpheed's case it was mostly FMV, but here it was used well and I am still impressed with all of the 3D structures that come flying towards the screen, despite appearing to run at 15-20 frames PS. (Stage 4 looks hot)
What ain't so hot is the actual game itself, I've had that many damn collisions with enemy ships I just about got up and punched a hole through my Trinitron, no shit.
LTP I know and I can see you have to approach the rather archaic gameplay a little differently to other 16 bit shmups, and the proof is there on YT that players can avoid most of the collisions, but damn.
Your basic starting shot is weak as all fuck and I think just about all of the popcorn takes more than one hit before biting the dust, and as they break thru your shot stream they circle around the bottom of the screen and threaten to collide with your ship
I found that the side blasters or whatever they're called actually seem to do more damage and stop a lot of the popcorn getting thru, and Phalanx shot is useful as well.
Anyway I'll stop rambling. Just wanted to know if this game is considered by shooting fans to be cheap, or is it actually as fair as anything else and I just suck?
That is all.
