Silpheed Series

Post by ProcoTaito »

Is anyone here also a fan of the Silpheed series? I found them to be good games and I'm a big fan of both the Sega-CD and PS2 versions. But, I've also played the series as far back as when it was released through Sierra on the IBM and Tandy computers.

Man, the memories of being in my grandfathers den late at night playing Silpheed. State of the art stuff back then. Might go play it now in fact....

NOT a fan of the spin-off Sylpheed game though. I was pretty damn pissed it was a space sim game and not another shmup. Then the one on Android, I have that one, but only because it had more simplified controls and wasn't as deep and involving as Sylpheed.

I'm probably just ranting here, but what are your feelings on this series? (ex. Gameplay, Silpheed ship design, etc.)

I though it might be a nice shmup topic to bring up. :)

I think it's still fun enough, but definitely not one of the best shmups. Actually, its approach is in general isn't very shmuppy at all in some ways, not that it's necessarily a bad thing. Sure, it follows quite a few shmup conventions, but the aim of the game is really to make the player feel like they're in a huge intergalactic firefight with enemy ships screaming past. It has sort of a simmy element to it, where you can get various systems on your ship knocked out, kind of like one of the 3d tank games back then.

I do like the Sega CD version's visuals a lot. It all comes together very nicely, and I think for that reason alone it's still pretty fun to pick up and play now and then. But the gameplay in general hasn't aged all too well, and the SCD remake played pretty oldschool even for the time. That said, it's a game I'd really like to have in my collection!

The first one on the Sega CD is a very nice game overall, only the "smooth" nature of the ship's firepower is what bugs me at times.
I haven't played the PS2 sequel yet, but I plan to do it soon.

You should, it's not half bad in my opinion.
Nice storyline.

The Lost Planet is like the ultimate Euro... where graphics, cutscenes and background dialogue overwhelm actual gameplay. It's still a fun game though.

Project Sylpheed wasn't worth the three bucks I paid for it.

Heh, completely agree there. :P
But the rest of the series is good enough to play through.

I'll probably get to Silpheed TLP here in a little bit.
I just really like the ship design of the SA-77 Silpheed quite a bit.

I've only played the PC version, way back. Original box is actually in my brother's closet somewhere. Floppies went bad before either of us ever cleared it though =/

The key to Project Sylpheed is realizing that it's actually an Ace Combat clone. As in, right down to the menus and music style.

I've played Silpheed for DOS and The Lost Planet for PS2. I love the guy's voice at the beginning of the first one on DOS.

Probably someday I'll get the xbox one just because it has "Sylpheed" in the title.

I promptly disregarded Sylpheed.
I assumed it was no name change, it was actually something completely different and pointless.

This is the first time I've ever been interested in it.

I actually enjoyed Project Sylpheed more than the PS2 Silpheed game (which seemed like it could be decent if it hadn't been rushed.) It does a pretty good job of making a starfighter sim work on a console controller. The first playthrough was cutscene-heavy (plot not the best) but doing a new game+ on the hardest difficulty with all of the better weapons already unlocked was great.

I just finished the first playthrough and am working through the DLC missions to unlock the bonus weapons before doing another run. Score Attack has ramped up the difficulty yet again - it's relentless and brutal. The powerful weapons are great to experiment with, though - I've just found a combination that I expect should work perfectly.

The controls are basically the same as in Ace Combat: I was able to map every button but one to work the same way. Anyone who's played one should be able to pick right up.

I just never got into Project Sylpheed, but I do enjoy Ace Combat, so maybe I'll look into it again under a different control scheme. :D

I just wish the SA-77 Silpheed was unlockable as a playable ship, that would have been awesome!

Project Sylpheed is *not* an Ace Combat clone. It's an X-Wing/Tie Fighter clone.

And a fucking brilliant one, at that.

Oh, okay. Well it's something I'll look into again soon I'm sure.
I'm just really stuck on the Silpheed shmups right now. ;)

Have the PS2 Silpheed game. It's kinda boring...

Maybe I should give it another go. Or not. :|

I remember this and SSX were the first 2 games I got when PS2 launched. It was an awesome fireworks display at the time. Even though the gameplay was basic, I was sooo happy to have a proper top down shmup on PS2 with modern day graphics that didnt feel too "polygonish".

Its still a solid game and I wish Treasure would make a proper sequel, not that "Project Silpheed" bs.

Had no idea Treasure was involved with that incarnation of Silpheed. Still, Treasure's relation to the series is likely the same as their relation to Gradius - any decisions as to the series' direction certainly doesn't lie with them.

That's probably very true, but I think they did a good job with renewing the series with TLP. I know it was kinda slow, but the story was gripping for me personally and I really did feel bad for the humans living on Solont. TLP has a very movie style quality to it that some other shmups seem to miss. I did actually tear up a little at the end, something about the music that plays in the background and the whole "Humans are a foolish race" speech.

You might find it funny, but Darius actually has a full story to it, and it gets a tad deep if you really look into it. Just remember that the games don't run in chronological order story wise. ;)

The Sega CD game still holds up pretty well and is a good bit of fun to play. The PS2 game on the other hand--great visuals, but seriously snooze-inducing gameplay. One of Treasure's worst efforts.

Yeah, I wasn't crazy about Silpheed: The Lost Planet. I think I used the three-way exploding bomb weapons in both slots for most of the game.

I recently picked up the Mega CD version w/o spinecard and have been playing it over the last couple of nights.

It's amazing really, just about any first gen 3D game throwing texture mapped polygons around seems to have aged badly, yet the ones with the flat shaded polys still look great. Ok, in Silpheed's case it was mostly FMV, but here it was used well and I am still impressed with all of the 3D structures that come flying towards the screen, despite appearing to run at 15-20 frames PS. (Stage 4 looks hot) 8)

What ain't so hot is the actual game itself, I've had that many damn collisions with enemy ships I just about got up and punched a hole through my Trinitron, no shit.

LTP I know and I can see you have to approach the rather archaic gameplay a little differently to other 16 bit shmups, and the proof is there on YT that players can avoid most of the collisions, but damn.

Your basic starting shot is weak as all fuck and I think just about all of the popcorn takes more than one hit before biting the dust, and as they break thru your shot stream they circle around the bottom of the screen and threaten to collide with your ship

I found that the side blasters or whatever they're called actually seem to do more damage and stop a lot of the popcorn getting thru, and Phalanx shot is useful as well.

Anyway I'll stop rambling. Just wanted to know if this game is considered by shooting fans to be cheap, or is it actually as fair as anything else and I just suck?

That is all.

I recall playing Silpheed on the trash 80 or TRS-128, can't recall. Underwhelming, but that was like 20 years ago, so I may have to give it another chance :D
