It was definitely a tripping point for me, but I promise once you get a grip on the section it's really not bad at all. Take advantage of hyper startup invincibility, you're safe longer than you think. Also popping a manual bomb in there gives you a lot of time to maneuver if you miss one of your moves.

Rank

There's nothing quite like "oh, hey, I managed to do that better than I ever have before and didn't need my hyper for a screen clear! Oh, there's another hyper dropping directly in the path I need to take. *few seconds pass* Ok, here's the part where I hyper to hold the chain *proceed to get raped by increased rank that I'm not used to from second hyper*."

Rank is pure BS that's for sure. As if these games in general don't have ridiculous enough base difficulty as it is.

I was looking at my shelf full of shmups that I worked hard to find, and collect, and have shipped over to me and it made me realise that my grievance is that I just can't enjoy them, which is a shame. I can't find any enjoyment in just playing them casually (not for any amount of time) but playing them with the intention of clearing them is equally unsatisfying and ultimately just becomes an exercise in self-inflicted frustration because it's not possible. As I've said many times, it's not that I don't like the games themselves, it's that I hate the insurmountable difficulty and it's ultimately that which ruins them for me.
To go "full-Plank" - colloquial - To experience disproportionate levels of frustration as a result of resistance to completing a task. Those who go "full-Plank" very rarely recover.

The last two posts have my approval for an eugenetic treatment for shmups.com.

I'd say that mods need to be more proactive about bans/probations but then I'd probably be a casualty of that policy :V

If he's using the version of MAME I think he is, he actually has less slowdown than normal.

More evidence that despite what a few people would like to tell you, natural talent is probably the deciding factor as to whether you can clear something or not. Even after tons of credits, I'm completely unable to do shit with Futari, even Black Label (1.5, I can't even get past the first half of stage 3).

Maybe you should just give up and go do something you're naturally good at, since you obviously don't have the will to actually get better at anything.

Or you can stop being a whiny scrub and actually start working on getting better.

That's why we need more eugenics in this forum.

Can't get past the 2nd boss in Ketsui, namely the attack when he fires stuff into the screen's edges and the stuff turns into bullets that go in a crooked pattern.

The rest of the game?
No problem!
But that attack always kills me, hence I never get to the Ura loop.

That attack is easy when you know the trick:

When he fires the canister, move to the opposite side of the screen. Watch the pattern; it turns into sort-of vertically oriented "hallways" moving across the screen. Get into the second or third hallway as it stretches down, and move with it, but before you get to the edge, slip into the "next" hallway and move with it for a bit until you get a convenient opportunity to slip into the "next" hallway; after you've done this a few times, the hallways won't reach to the top of the screen anymore, so you can just go out the top and move to the other side, repeat.

Tomorrow's players. They can 1-CC everything, first credit. Second credit, best possible score, ever. Ever!

I actually have a (pointless) grievance, dammit. Why, oh why early Saturn shmups had poor Yoko modes? I tried to play Batsugun in Saturn mode as I can't tate my current tv, and I always get caught by bullets shot from an off-screen enemy. What the hell?

Gunbird on Saturn had a crap yoko mode too. The only available yoko mode was "wobble," so you either couldn't see the top of the screen if you were near the bottom, and if you backed up or moved foward the bullets seemed to change speed.

Or just bomb that part... personally, I grieved too much over unwanted deaths on that part so I bombed it just when the second "bomb" hits the other side of the screen.

He specifically mentioned trying to get into the Ura loop, which requires no miss AND no bomb.

RE: Ketsui's second boss

I found that pattern much easier to dodge when not thinking about moving left or right, but up and down the screen. The pattern disrupts your perception by throwing things at you from a direction not common in shooting games. It's a relatively sparse pattern and not all that fast. Tapping up or down should let you pass through no problem.

Moving horizontally is too risky in that pattern, especially shooting for a corner or specific side of the screen.

my 2 cents

This is pretty much the majority of ketsui. Most of the difficulty in my experience comes from it being confusing to look at.

You are, unless you're talking 2-2 boss, then I'm not sure.

I usually play too agressively when I play Ketsui, which ends up with lots of random flying into bullets. Totally my fault there though.

Hahaha, then I MUST be missing something. I'll have to make a savestate later and work out what I'm doing wrong. I'll probably end up kicking myself. :|
