This is beyond awesome... and if you manage to reproduce the "ranyonese" feeling (or the way he writes), I'll make you an altar and sacrifice a sheep with it's guts to you...

I think I grumbled about that one for longer than it actually took to work on. Ended up having to find the relevant code by the power of educated guesswork, which was the real problem. Textures are stored into slots, and the slot that particular texture went into is used over 100 times throughout the entire game. Once I actually found it and deciphered it, it wasn't so bad to reorganize how things are laid out.

So far the font code has proven to be far, far, far more trouble.

Truly fantastic. Want to change the topic title so more people can be aware of this, RNGmaster? Now reaches the fatal attraction be described as "TRANSLATION PATCH"!
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Great news, I love the game but would love it even more if I can understand its text.

Great news, I'm really looking forward to Hellsinker's translation! Are there any other games that are in mind for other translation projects? I don't mean to be pushy on your work or anything, I'm sure you're busy enough with the current one but I'm just wondering. :)

I don't like to talk about things that might possibly be coming up unless they're definitely going to be finished. Hate the hype train for things that may or may not ever be coming.

Hey mauve... Is the dialog really as dense and incomprehensible as they claim?

You're going to laugh at me, but I actually haven't spent much time reading stuff at this point. I'm on the technical side of things, so whenever I receive resources from the translator or image editor, my questions aren't "how well does this read?" or "does this even make sense?" but more along the lines of "does this crash it?" / "does this replace the original resource correctly?" / "does this look good?" / "ugh why did i choose this font?" / "am i going to have to re-align things to be a few pixels left or right to look good?" and so forth. My #1 nightmare is something causing replay desyncs. (More than the game itself does, anyway...)

What I have actually paid attention to so far is.. hm. I don't think it's incomprehensible but it definitely isn't shy about leaving things up to the player to figure out. It just is what it is and seems pretty proud of it.

As things go closer to testing time I'll be experiencing it more fully myself and giving feedback to the rest of the staff about it. I did make an invincibility hack just for testing things out easily/quickly, at least. Which is good because I'm not much of a shmup player these days! More of a fighting game guy. (Though, some companies do seem to be trying to bridge the gap lately.)

So according to Ranyon/Tonnor's Twitter, he's been working on a patch himself for a while now to bring a few new features such as sound effect and music volume control to the game. Maybe it would be better if progress on this translation patch was halted until he released that? It would really be a shame if his official patch was incompatible with it.

Correction: The patch came out. One hour ago.

I get to spend the rest of the week updating all of my hacks (there's about 3000ish individually mapped entries) for this.

Fortunately I have a tool that will automatically remap 95% of these. The rest will have to be done by hand.

Wow, this just keeps getting better. Well, maybe not for you, but... Can't wait to finally turn down those music-obscuring sound effects!

He's got the new patch up for download on his new website. The file is hs_C72_patch_1009.exe but it can't be linked directly.

This is going to need a new English control pad mapper (HS_padas.exe) as well because he slightly updated it to allow for more buttons. It seems he added a few things to the instruction manual too.

Instruction manual hasn't changed from .8f. Neither have any other content files, as far as I can tell.

Shouldn't need to reset any progress.

And good thing I hadn't gotten started on my own hacks for the pad stuff, that was one of the last things on the list.

I took my old config3.sav and put it on the new instalation and what I got was a bugged main screen.

BTW: My old Hellsinker folder was of 400 MB... now it's 200 MB....

Did Tonnor release a patch just to compress the game archives?

I'm fucking stoked about the translation patch. Maybe it will get people to actually post more scores and discuss more strategy for this game!

You shouldn't have to reinstall to apply the update patch. At least, I didn't have to. I didn't have to destroy my progress either, and my older replays aren't desync'ing.

My replay didn't desync so I doubt it. Maybe you just didn't notice how its duration depends on Sol level before?

I played HS way too long to not notice that.

Maybe The replays are more like movie files which just replay it as a motion picture, and don't record pushed buttons and stuff.

A full-game replay is 1.65 MB (much too small for a ~50 minute movie), and I've heard people complain about them desync'ing before, especially across operating systems. They're just input files that don't record pausing.

Yeah, the game has known desyncing problems. I saw things on Japanese sites like "run the replay immediately after starting the game up to prevent desyncs" when researching stuff about it. I can confirm that the replay files are just input sequences and nothing more.

It also has a few other known bugs, like crashes on the sound test menu.

As far as translaty things go, 1.0.0.8f hacking is effectively done at this point, sans one font bug, so just waiting on the remainder of the edits/translation things while things get tested and sorted out. Again, don't know how long that's going to take.

1.0.0.9... I dunno. This patch is proving to be extremely problematic for a lot of reasons, so I'm not sure how that's going to turn out. Despite what the changelog says, there's some pretty major internal structural changes. Going to take a break for a little while before getting back to this one.
