I wouldn't call it a mainstream movie. Otherwise...you gotta admit that the opening with Hitler in the clouds is pretty amazing, ideology aside.

I was thinking of this thread when I ran across this SF Gate article. It's one of those "click through the picture" deals but has some interesting takes on who shouldn't have won Oscars, i.e. James Cagney's role in White Heat lost out to Broderick Crawford, etc. They also have a "best picture" version.

I watched a local production of this last year, and I imagine the film is that, but with Marlon Brando, which doesn't really do anything for me despite his presence. Vaguely interested in looking up Sayonara again, or seeing Mutiny on the Bounty, though.

Good OP, but I'd put Charade(1963) on the list for sure. If not Dr. Strangelove, my favorite film made before I was born.

Le Samourai wouldn't be far after it. I can tell how many modern classics that film paved the way for, namely Ronin.

Yeah, watched Se7en on the big screen back in the day. The ending is a truly WTF! moment of sheer genius. Compared to watching the alternative ending scene that was compiled as composite sketches but never filmed, the original ending is the one to stick with.

I watched it without reading any critics' reviews of it beforehand, making for a profound movie experience with the infamous gut-wrenching ending -- have never seen another film ending like Se7en since then. Combine the usage of horror-gore props in the detective thriller genre to advance the story along, raises the bar quite lofty indeed. Not to mention the usage of full-sized 20w bulbs for subtle lighting one particular scene...can't buy those bulbs anymore nowdays (with the U.S. government phasing out all 100w {and below} incandescent light bulbs in 2011 in favor of the compact flourescent light variants in their place).

I watched the scene when the detective is chasing the killer through the rainy streets from those rainy streets. It was a good day to have an overcoat.
