It lulls you into a false sense of security before viciously assraping you and donkey punching you right before you die, just so you're in tears while you try to switch off your console.
PS' legendary difficulty is 90% myth (the other 10% are snakelasers and SE7).
Dunno man, I've seen that game get real nasty. All runs with potential always ended in tantrums when we had it in the arcade.
That;s what makes PS so damn awesome.

So what I gather is that people say they want hard games but actually they just want to pretend their games are hard. I guess building a myth of a game of pretty average difficulty (DOJBL) being some holy grail of hardness is in line with this too.

Why are you people playing Cave games again?

We at shmups forum want our games hard as nails, except not hard as nails. We would like to think we're playing hard games, so when we're confronted with a game that's actually hard we rightfully ignore it and pretend it's the wrong kind of "hard". We like thinking well of ourselves, even if we lack dedication and skill to actually become good. — Revelation, 17:23

According to the Shmups Bible. Now only if I could find one in print, it'd be all good.

Yeah, fair point  Everyone has a personal vision for what they think a cool DDP should be. Kudos to Cave for just doing what they do.

Sorry for bringing back an earlier subject but I was wondering if anyone here knows why people say Akai Katana was a flop? Is it based on any facts or published sales figures? There's a negative buzz for the game around here which seems to be based on heresay.

Top scorers capped out the game quickly. Also, the kits didn't sell through quickly and Cave recalled unsold stock.

It was actually somewhat difficult to source at a time because there were no kit price drops before stock was gone.

But have you tried your hand at it?
Yep, I've given it a crack. Never had the pcb, but I played it in the arcade a few times and on the home port. I found it's deceptively easy at the beginning but the rank becomes as difficult to keep a grip on as a rubber dildo covered in baby oil. Game busts my ballz man.

I never heard PS difficulty being called a myth before, but I probably just haven't played it enough.

Anyway, this is OT.

Because we enjoy them.

Cagar, that isn't really my philosophy, I prefer difficulty in survival/scoring to be more equally balanced is all.

They have questionnaires for people to fill out with questions like "rank the difficulty on a scale of 1-5", etc.

Everyone should just fill out 1 so cave ups the difficulty tenfold.

To add to what brentsg said, the port also sold pretty poorly relative to Cave's other shooter ports on 360. A lot of people like to throw the blame on the 360's active userbase in Japan, but the low demand of the PCB points to the game itself as the culprit. Poor reception in arcades seems to be the kiss of death for shooter ports.

Anyways, sorry for derailing the derail. Carry on.

I like the sound of this. Basically a less punishing DOJ with gentler chaining, limited autobomb, and no weapon downgrades when you die, without going to the extremes of DFK. Not a bad way to go out if it ends up being their last.

From what I've seen in the videos, the game looks much more like a proper sequel to DOJ than DFK ever was. I don't really oppose sexual undertones in my games, but I always thought that DFK's giant Transformer-lolis and all that cocklaser-spam didn't really fit in the DDP universe. I don't mind the pilots in SDOJ donning bikinis at all, though. If this leads to Cave selling a couple of PCBs more, that's fine by me.

SDOJ looks really interesting, albeit, as has been noted, a little generic, design-wise. You could say that about most of the series, though.

Interesting point. DP was very obviously post-Toaplan, DDP was bright and lighthearted, DOJ grim as norwegian black metal, and DDP DFK was bubblegum J-Pop, so it´s quite hard to argue that the series has a solid stylistic consistency. Maybe it´s like Zelda where every title is essentially the same game but varies in its tone and atmosphere.

Let's be honest; the majority of Cave games are border-line impossible anyway. There is certainly no appreciable difference in difficulty between a lot of them. The difference that does exist is like saying that climbing Everest and stopping 5 feet short of the summit is "easier" that climbing to the peak.
To go "full-Plank" - colloquial - To experience disproportionate levels of frustration as a result of resistance to completing a task. Those who go "full-Plank" very rarely recover.
