AIRRADE Air

Post by Icarus »

NOTE: This thread is no longer being updated. If there is no new thread created and you wish to make one, just copy-paste and notify a mod to lock this one down.

Presenting the highscore table for AIRRADE Air, a nifty little homemade shooter featuring the popular characters from the PC game Air. Made by Studio Siesta, this features pretty tough, almost manic horizontal scrolling shooting, with a very good scoring system, and good controls. Definitely worth checking out :)

Siesta's homepage is here. The demo is here.

Scores for both the demo and the full version are available. I'll pop up a complete character list in the next few days. For now, the three default characters in the full game are:
  • Misuzu - the blonde one
  • Kano - the blue haired one with the yellow ribbon
  • Minagi - the dark haired one
As for controls:
Icarus wrote:
  1. A = Shot
  2. B = Punch (sends enemies flying across the screen in a straight line)
  3. C = Uppercut (sends enemies flying in an arc across the screen)
  4. D = AIR Dash (special attack, it is possible to aim the direction you fly in by holding down that direction before you shoot off)
  5. > + B = Power Punch (this has to be timed properly, tap right then B, not press simultaneously)
  6. ^> + C = Power Upper (same kind of timing as the Power Punch)
  7. AIR Dash, then > + B while charging = Fireball (slowmoving multihit fireball that also vacuums items to you while active)
  8. < AFTER Punch/Upper = Quick Recovery (this one is timing as well, you want to push left just as your character withdraws their arm after punching/uppering. Enables quick punch bar recovery)
  9. 1P & 2P Simultaneous AIR Dash = Hyper Mode (all Punches and Uppers are Power variants until Hyper Mode is exhausted)
NOTE: If you're playing on a keyb, the ABCD buttons are mapped to ZXCS, in that order. Pad players have them mapped to buttons 1234, and all buttons are configurable.
If you wish to share replays, then have a look in the "replay" folder of your AIRRADE Air root directory, where you'll find input files. Feel free to share them, if you wish.

And the score tables :)

I don't really understand how the scoring system works, but whatever.

Demo.

The scoring system:
Icarus wrote:
  • ITEM BONUS:
Once you are at full Shot power, you will start to receive points for the items. Their value starts at 100pts, and will be doubled each time until it reaches a maximum of 51,200pts. If you miss an item, the values will be reset to 100pts, and will have to be rebuilt.
  • CHAIN MULTIPLIER:
You can use Punch, Upper or the "powerup flash" to create chain explosions, which are affected by a multiplier. This multiplier is based on the number of enemies caught in the chain, so if you destroy 35 enemies in one chain, for example, your highest multiplier will be 35x. I believe that this multiplier is global, so all enemies caught in the example chain will have their base point values multiplied by 35x.
  • SPECIAL MULTIPLIER:
When you use the AIR Special Attack, you are sent flying across the screen, causing a massive chain reaction. For the first ten enemies caught in the special chain, they will be multiplied by 1024x, the next ten will be 2048x, and the rest after will be 4096x. The rewards for linking together a massive group using the AIR Special Attack far outweigh the temporary power-down your character suffers as a result of using the attack.

Also, when you cause a big enough special chain, you will get the Fever Bonus, where the screen is swarmed by a lot of bullet-firing eggs. These eggs can be destroyed as normal enemies, and will release one item for each destroyed. They can also be chained like regular enemies *hint hint* ^_^
  • SPEEDY FORMATION CLEARANCE:
Like Feveron, clearing enemy formations quickly will cause extra formations to appear. More chaining opportunities ^_^
  • SHOT IMPACT SYSTEM:
    Thanks to Eltegantis:
You have a little meter and a multiplier over your character's face, and as you take down enemies with your shot it goes up as high as 10x, then falls back down rapidly when you stop. This multiplier works on chains and terrible air chains as well, so it seems best to deliberately shoot down a few enemies on the edge of the formation before punching.
  • END OF STAGE BONUSES:
If you successfully No-Miss the stage, your Life Bonus will be doubled. You will also get a doubled Item Bonus if you successfully pick up all items available, without letting one leave the screen.

I know there are more of you out there playing! please post a score or two :)

Here's mine:

DEMO VERSION:
Icarus - 41,774,920 - 33
(replay input)

Image

Still trying to get my timing down to catch the group of eggs that appear in Fever Mode, plus looking for opportunities to use the AIR Special. Quite happy with this, but dropped a lot of items.

FULL VERSION:
Icarus - 115,577,200 - Misuzu - Stage 3 - 54
(replay input)

Image

Got taken out in stage 3, trying to catch a cluster of enemies with the AIR Special. Lots of mistakes leading up to the stage 2 battle with Kano. Can be vastly improved upon :?

Full version:
Eltegantis - 1,258,694,820 - Misuzu - Stage 5 - 82 Chain

Died just before Ryuuya and Uraha went down. And miraculously the replay for this run doesn't break halfway through like they usually do... but I'm having trouble uploading it at the moment. I can post it later if there's interest.

The key to scoring high this time seems to be the Shot Impact system; you have a little meter and a multiplier over your character's face, and as you take down enemies with your shot it goes up as high as 10x, then falls back down rapidly when you stop. This multiplier works on chains and terrible air chains as well, so it seems best to deliberately shoot down a few enemies on the edge of the formation before punching. You can see this in action in this replay for the old demo version: click the blue button.

Goddamnit, dethroned! ;)

Good stuff Eltegantis, I had a bit of a crappy run that made it to stage 5, and the Ryuuya/Uraha pair cleaned house very damn quickly. So I'm knida worried about the later stages ;)

If you don't mind, I've taken your description of the Shot Impact System and added it to the quick list for the scoring systems.

Hope you're having fun with it. In future, could you please post your scores in the correct format, so I can update the score list a bit easier.

I just got the full version of this today along with Angeraze2. I am glad this thread was here. I didn't even realize there was a 4th button being used, nor did i know about the power punches, cancels, and other specials.

Where did you get all this info from icarus? Did you just translate it on your own? How do the unlockables work?

I am a big fan of the Airrade series (got all three), and the original AIR game which these are based, and played Airrade AIR quite a lot. All the info for scoring and gameplay I have determined from experience and observation, so they are pretty much correct ^_-

You can change your controller/keyb config in the options screen. I can put up a translation later if required. (It's almost 5am here, gotta sleep x_x)

Characters are unlocked by clearing the game with other characters. For example, to unlock Hijiri (Kano's older sister), complete the game with Kano. Likewise, to unlock Yukito, clear the game with Misuzu. To unlock Michiru, clear with Minagi. Other secret characters are unlocked in a similar fashion. (Winged Misuzu rocks!)

As for game modes and options, they are unlocked on a time played and games cleared basis.

This game is MUCH harder than Bike Banditz despite you having a life bar.

Extends:

Stage 2: Destroy the red frog before he gets bored and leaves.
Stage 4: Kill one of the shiny frogs before they get bored and leave.

Extra Life Points:

40 hit chain: 1 heart
80 hit chain: 2 hearts (not 70)

I assume it's every 40 hits to get an extra life point.

I figured out the secret score trick in stage 3! :D

Fucked up stage 4 hardcore though :(

Replay here. Replay may be broken. Why are they time based and not frame based like Bike Banditz?

I rank the game up high enough to make the margin of error of the triple layered circular boss pattern as small as about 3 pixels Image
