I certainly think that it does make a difference. When I'm not in the mood these games seem beyond ridiculous. Even in the right frame of mind it's a struggle to imagine that they are able to be completed, but it isn't beyond the realms of possibility.JJXB wrote:having to be in the right mood in order to progress. DFK black still baffles me. Unless I am doing something odd, the game is ludicrously hard and I'm on the 2nd level...... I'm not feeling it at all. I have warmed to the soundtrack a little, but still feel that 1.5's is better. I like that the chain meter seems a little more forgiving because the meter in 1.5 is stupid. It fucking cancels my chain even when I'm lasering something.

Re: The BIG thread of Shmup grievances.
If you keep your laser locked on to an enemy, the chain gauge decreases and stays steady at the very bottom. When you destroy that enemy with the laser the chain gauge does not replenish as if you destroyed it with shot. So you need to line up your route so you destroy an enemy directly after destroying the last enemy with laser. Also, destroying more enemies at once will boost the chain gauge more.DrTrouserPlank wrote: DFK black still baffles me. Also in case you still think I'm lying, wait, "tending to overestimate my ability/rate of success", I felt like firing up Futari in the first time for months and played a warm up round of 1.5 Original. I cleared it with 2 extra lives remaining and that was the absolute first try without any stage 1 restarts or anything like that.Erppo wrote:DFKBL is easier than 1.5 in many ways. Thanks. I don't remember the score exactly but it was somewhere between 250 and 300 million.
Re: The BIG thread of Shmup grievances.
to me it's less "this is impossible to complete" when i'm not in the right mindset and it's more "Why am i screwing up so much? i know i can fucking do better" and that ends up pissing me off to a point where i leave the game for a while until i do feel like playing again.DrTrouserPlank wrote:I certainly think that it does make a difference. and having read up some of the stuff on here about both DFK and DFKBL, i had some idea of what i was doing. Main trouble with Black label is survival to me but i'm always approaching it with a "I can do this" mindset while from what i have observed of you in the process of my lurking, your general approach is "is this even possible?" (no offense meant). am I good? the response when compared to most standards on here would be "hell no" but even with that, somehow i've made the DDP:R leaderboards on all the modes are in what i would consider reasonable positions (name on XBL is the same as here so if you want to judge, check there). so i can't be that bad either. that's why whenever i'm screwing up constantly, it pisses me off because i know i can and should do better. and the only exception is when i'm in the right mood. either way, i try to improve but also enjoy.

Re: The BIG thread of Shmup grievances.
He's definitely better than me in Mushi Original if not shoot-em-ups in general. I've never reached stage 5 on a single credit. I'm the worst participating member on my team in the annual STGT. I'm definitely a bottom half player.Erppo wrote:Also while there are certainly better players here, I'm sure there are loads of players worse than you here too. You are able to get to the last stage in 1.5 Original and that already tells you have learned something. From the impression I've gotten I'd say you might actually be in the better half of players here already. Most of the worse players just don't make that big of a number about it and go blaming the games for their own lack of experience.
The only arcade shoot-em-up I could claim competence (not greatness) in would be Deathsmiles. My meta-game strategy was as follows: Casper has the fewest players and the lowest high scores. I'll make her my main, and reach the top of the Casper scoreboards. It was tough. At times, I thought I'd never make it, but I kept at it. As a result, I am currently 1st with Casper on the North American 360 mode leader boards, and 1st with Casper on this website. However, in the grand scheme of things, my scores are nothing special and are easily crushed by a lot of better players.
The moral of this story is that people need to realize what they are capable of and set realistic goals.
I still play Mushihimesama Futari on Novice mode once per play session. Why? Because I still can't no-miss that mode. I see a novice no-miss as a goal I should manage before I can expect an Original Mode 1CC. It is encouraging to accomplish smaller goals while working towards a larger one. "Yes! I did this thing that I could not do before! Now I'll attempt something more difficult! I can do it!" Really helps develop an attitude for gains.

After the first week, I checked the participation levels, thought about the scoring system, and decided I could try for a top half overall finish. Meta-game strategy, realistic goals, etc.

I don't know, I have trouble with the limited firepower. It is barely enough in XOP Black Ultra and now it gets worse when using bombs. The bullets turning into popcorn enemies are a cool/wicked idea somehow, but the thought that a bomb doesn't necessarily save your ass for long as lots more bullets are coming in and you lose firepower for the standard enemies because of having to shoot the popcorn... doesn't feel much fun to me thus far. Maybe it's just about memorizing/strategizing like every so often.BPzeBanshee wrote:It does seem a bit bullshit doesn't it? The furthest I've gotten is Stage 2's midboss.
I for one like how it's straightforward - I'm not left feeling lost as to what mode could be considered the 'experts' one to pick or what mode is just right for me. Just dodge the bullets and use the bombs to YO DAWG up some points.

@DrTrouserPlank:
Maybe it's been suggested already, and I hope you'll forgive me that I didn't bother to read through the countless posts of "ignore DTP" and whatnot if it was mentioned already, but I think you should try the Touhou series if you haven't yet. It doesn't have big explosions or any huge amount of sensory overload like most modern bullet hell arcade shooters, but it does have lots of bullet dodging and four difficulties in each of it's main games: Easy, Normal, Hard and Lunatic. Easy in particular really is very easy, especially when compared to most arcade shooters (which are probably comparable to Hard mode the majority of the time). There are also many games in the series for you to try if you didn't take a particular liking to one of them. Perfect Cherry Blossom or Imperishable Night are usually regarded as the easiest in the series and the most beginner friendly, if you did want to check it out.

I found BL pretty easy to adapt to. Mainly you just need to do less stuff and the things you do for score are overall a lot easier to execute. Daioufuckingjou is an Asshole with a capital "A". I've been playing this game for over 3 years now, and I still have yet to beat stage 5, and I can only arrive there with like, 1 or 2 lives in stock. Makes Espgaluda II seem incredibly underwhelming in comparison, even when utilizing kakusei zesshikai. (It hasn't even been half a month since I've got this game and I can make it to the stage 4 boss regularly with a somewhat measly score of over 58,000,000.) I have yet to grasp why people find Espgaluda II to be one of the harder CAVE games. It just feels so natural and refreshing compared to DOJ...but that's just me.
I know, I know, it's not the game's fault, it's my own. But at least I've tried everything I could think of in a vain attempt to make a small degree of improvement. Leaving hypers alone so the rank will increase only slowly, going all out and using every hyper and bomb I can find, etc. This game just hates my guts. /bitching
