Nah, it was never intended to be written by Kojima. Looks like someone in platinum is writing it since they ditched the story konami worked on before. But yeah, as long as the game plays well I don't care.

I'm sure this will be your next 10/10 game skykid
Well if Kojima isn't on writing duties, there's hope! :D

Honestly, it looks like Platinum just wanted to make a ridiculous hack n slash game and the Konami deal basically amounted to this:

"Put metal gear shit into the game and it will sell a lot better."

Of course not... you need to read the sentence as a whole for it to make sense right? It's a synopsis.
So it's an MGS game where Raiden is the protagonist, it's written by Kojima and it's co-developed by Platinum?

The fans reactions are odd. I don't care... it's Metal Gear with a cyborg ninja running at 60 made by platinum. SOLD.

I started Bayonnette again last night also. Just beat Showdown of the Damned for the 3rd time last week.

Skykid u have issues with Hideo's writing but not Gears or Godhand?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I'm still looking forward to Ninja Gaiden 3, even if it's not as good as 1 or 2 it's the type of game I like/want to play.

What's wrong with the writing in those?

Gears isn't exactly scriptwriting gold, but it gets the job done. It's difficult to ruin dialogue that works on nothing except old-school machismo and loveable cliche.

Godhand's script/plot doesn't want or try to matter. It knows its place as a pointless backdrop to nutty fighting action.

The debate above reminds me of the Metroid: Other M annoucnement, when people started to lament over the cutscenes, like the cutscenes and dialogue should be anybody's principal concern in a Metroid game.
I can't think of many Japanese TPP slashers where the dialogue wasn't bad or "so bad it was good" at best.
Blood Will Tell and Crimson Tears fared above average.

I'm great with all of the above... I just thought metal gear was above average as far as story goes. Keep in mind video games aren't Shakespeare.

I liked Other M also. I even enjoyed the cutscenes my 1st play through *GASP*.

QTE, camera angles, cutscene whining I can't help but roll my eyes at by now. That's not all directed at you skykid... just the internet in general. They are usually scape goats for old gamers who fell of the horse.

*shrug* They're all just barriers to the gameplay, and they're a non-issue insofar as they're unintrusive. I can't say as I care for QTEs or cutscenes, as games fare much better if they can pull off the storytelling and setpieces without pulling you out of the experience. I suppose QTEs are really just sort of an easy way to keep you engaged during cutscenes. I do wonder that skippable cutscenes aren't an industry standard by now, since they're universally preferred.

Anyway, I can understand disappointment in games where previously established narrative standards drop noticeably in a new installment. People liked the silent, self-sufficient Samus just as she was, and I appreciate that. Nintendo knows the fans would begin to hemorrhage if the Link in their heads built up over 20 years of games didn't match with the Link on the screen. As long as the feedback remains in the form of critique instead of histrionics, I count it valid. But it rarely does except in certain, rather small online communities. This forum has a better track record than most. I think the only gaming niche I've found that runs almost entirely on rationality belongs to the roguelike. Probably because of the very intimate relationship between devs and players that doesn't really exist anywhere else.

Erm.. I seem to have gone offtopic. Tired.

That's what Kojima needs to realise.

MGS plot/scripting is a train wreck in a narrative sense, but admittedly one composed of superbly directed cinematics. Those pros and cons coexist in all sorts, just like the special effects in Transformers deserve a round of applause but everything else is garbage.

Other M's cutscenes were crap in both respects, in addition to not fitting with established Metroid storytelling/design. They deserve the adverse reactions they received imo.

I kind of agree with you for once. I appreciate Kojima's direction, but his games are nothing more but convoluted nonsense and incomprehensible dialogue upon the backdrop of espionage and mech fandom. I've hated most of the series for a long time, and honestly, I probably always will. He has done a fair bit for gaming, but really, I can only appreciate everything up until the original MGS.

I don't take the metal gears that serious... always found the stories and characters held my attention more than most.

Other M was fine to me... start button makes the cut scenes go away. If they made a Zelda with a Link that spoke I'd prefer them not. But unless the gameplay was fucked I wouldn't feel the need to cry over it.

The start button makes all that go away. Kinda like waisting walls of text b/c a games title screen sucks.

If I can enjoy Gears 3 with it's lame football flashback scenes and all around "Bro" attitude. I certainly can enjoy Metal Gears over the top triple crosses and epic mech fights.

I think Hideo is having fun with it.. he never declared himself Shakespeare. I play games for fun and to get away from seriousness.

I started Peace Walker. I love it. In comparison, I liked MGS2's gameplay, didn't care for the story, recently tried MGS3 and hated it.

Peace Walker gives me everything but the ability to drag enemies places. I don't actually mind that MGS is a worn army jacket filled with anime, so long as the gameplay's good. And that's what MGS has a split personality disorder over - it doesn't know if it's a movie or a game.

Ability to quick restart, CROUCH WALK, ganking enemies and stripping them of items... the HD port is also a great remake; I've never looked up any Peace Walker vids before, but man, that thing looks awful on PSP. I also avoided it due to the PSP's controls. I think MGS works better as a stealth game, rather than trying to pick off enemies with weapons.

And now I see the JP PS3 store has it for direct download, but the US one doesn't, and 360 doesn't have either. Damn it, I should have just saved myself the money and bought Peace Walker by itself.

I enjoyed PW on PS3 alot also. I liked it on PSP but did enjoy it way more via a dual shock.

But I LOVE MGS3 ..... alot.

I've always found MG to be half movie and half game. MGS1 was half audio book I guess.

I forgot about them! I still haven't played one yet, so I'll have to take back my statement. I love the original MSX Metal Gear games, Policenauts, Snatcher, and even the first MGS; how does it compare to them?

My concerns about this game:

--Will "cut at will" precision cutting control still be in this? I can't picture using the analog stick that fast. Will it work with Move/Kinect?
--I hope they don't abuse mashing like Bayonetta, my thumbs can't take that much abuse!
--QTEs...um...please don't use them that much, I like controlling my movements, nothing overly surprising or complicated, thanks!
--NO MORE EARNING HALOS PLEASE, I HATE GRINDING FOR HALOS!

My (semi-unrealistic) hopes for this game:

--Raiden needs to have alternate outfits like Grey Fox's Cyborg Ninja and Null outfit, even if it's only a small thing.
--Blood and gore should splatter on his body like Berserk for PS2! None of that magical vanishing slop from Resident Evil games.
--Movelist should include sword-thrust (like MGS2) and dashing strike (like the Ninja Missions in MGS: VR Missions).
--Raiden needs to use Stealth Camo at least a couple times in this game. I know they said it's not going to be Stealth-based, but there should be a few missions you can use it in. He won't be a Ninja otherwise. If Batman: Arkham City can balance action and stealth, so can this game.
--Raiden needs a jump button, and possible top-down camera angle, like the MGS games...if only to throw people a bone when he jumps from rooftop to rooftop or jumping on top of Gekko heads!
--Raiden needs to fight Orbital Frames like Zone of Enders stuff! On a related note, Raiden needs Zero Shift!!
--Where's the B&B Unit!?
--Raiden should be able to run along walls and ceilings and cut things like Strider Hiryu!/Moondiver Seyfert!
--Raiden should be able to cut projectiles/bullets to be sure! Or do stuff like Megaman Zero/Haku=men at least!
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Well, Chaucer wasn't bad. And more broadly, Western lit has been up at Shakespeare levels since Homer. Though I suppose you were using a little syntax-play. /pedantry

I do wonder if videogames can/will ever approach artistic eminence. My gut says no, unless we're talking perfect VR or what have you. Multimedia, yes probably. But I see gameplay as fundamentally getting in the way of high artistic expression. Perhaps it's a failure of imagination.

Then again theater was held in similar low esteem re: art until Shakespeare/Marlow/Jonson.

Don't be daft.... who the hell plays a shooter for the story. Who the hell plays a fighter for the story. Who the hell plays Mario for the story, or Zelda for that matter. If you do... what do you do with the other 70 percent (or far more) of the time when the game play takes front seat.

A game can have a good story and be mostly story, but games are called games. They aren't called books or film for a reason. A good story can elevate a good game but it's not needed. My point is I don't condemn a game over the "story". If I did I wouldn't have a lot to play.

If a game comes up to the quality of a movie like 2001 or something one day, great. If they don't.... I'll live. Your taking my Shakespeare way to serious. If you like reading books or watching films don't get pissed b/c another format does or does not emulate it perfect. Kinda like bitching about a truck not being as good at something as a car is.

I don't need a movie or game to be the end all of plots to find entertaining and enjoyable. Still it's great when they do offer up a great story.

So... having said that. I find Metal Gear's story to be entertaining. *GASP* Even more enjoyable than alot of other games I own or have played through the years.

Who ever said we were talking about "story?" Does the Mona Lisa have a story?

The artistic capabilities of a medium do not begin or end with spoken/written narrative. Ikaruga, Battle Garegga, and Silvergun are all classified as legitimate art in my mind...but not for their "stories."

Even Citizen Kane's story is fairly predictable and cliche--it's how the story is TOLD that matters.

I don't know what you are talking about now (I was referring to story in games not being Shakespeare, as in he was a writer of well regarded stories).... nevermind. I like Metal Gear and a portion of that is due to the story, so sue me, stone me whatever.

I loved Uncharted 3 and part of that was due to the cutscenes, characters, story and gameplay. Loved it actually.

I love cave shooters and it certainly ain't for the story. If the story or cutscenes blow I hit the start button to get to the good stuff.

Erm, art is a slippery concept at best, but I would say at minimum it should speak to the human experience in one way or another. I've never seen a shmup that does that.

Sure, nothing new there. Games are entertainment for all of us. If Hideo took MGS a little less seriously it would probably benefit, and that's not in the sense of increasing the tropes and memes, but decreasing his attempts to make some kind of deep and meaningful drama out of a silly action video game. It's not like MGS is satirical either, it's just boring.

Do classical symphonies "speak to the human experience?" I would argue that all three of those games pull off a similar effect quite well.

Also, MGS has NEVER taken itself seriously. Look at pretty much everything involving Raiden. Skykid is really misunderstanding Kojima, who hasn't been particularly interested in the series since MGS3 (which he was minimally involved with), has little patience for its creepy fanbase, and would prefer to make another Snatcher/Policenauts. He was really involved with Peace Walker, but I think he was mainly excited about the PSP itself and the Monster Hunter/Uniqlo tie-ins.
