comparing it to Skyrim of all things is just silly. I shouldn't need to explain why.
Zelda doesn't need voice acting or any of the hardcore RPG elements of Skyrim to be good, that's not what I'm saying. Nintendo just needs to acknowledge stuff like that exists and create a Hyrule that can be just as compelling in ways that do compliment what makes Zelda great. (maybe the fact that Skyrim got 40/40 in Famitsu will make them take notice?)

I want to ride around on a horse across fields and mountains, scavenge dungeons for treasure, and go to a multitude of towns with their own variety of interesting townsfolk. Skyrim happens to approximate that pretty well. Why is it silly to compare them again? Is it because Zelda is more about the puzzles and boss fights? Get the googly eyes on the wall to follow my sword around until they get dizzy and die! That's what supposedly sets this game apart. This iteration is largely unchanged from the N64 Zeldas and the tweaks to the combat aren't nearly enough to reinvigorate it, and that's why the gameplay is outdated. Is there really anything new about this Zelda besides Motion Plus? If anything this game has regressed from the N64 Zeldas. The areas you go to just feel compartmentalized by the sky interface, the illusion of a giant world isn't there for me. Wind Waker was similar but it's far worse here. As far as creating interesting worlds to explore, Skyward Sword could learn a lot from last gen titles like Okami and Shadow of the Colossus, nevermind Skyrim. Here's the forest stage, here's the volcano stage, desert stage, etc. etc., all accessible from beams of light poking out of the mostly empty clouds.

In addition, I think the game can be light-hearted without being cutesy, and those woodland creatures in the forest were pushing it. I'm getting sick of having a magical babbling accomplice who has the personality of a HAL 9000 as well.

Finished this last week and i think it is one of the weaker 3D console TLoZ games. On par with TP at most. Too much hand holding (it has a freaking in-game walktrough, goddamnit) and too much emphasis on rather unneccessary motion controls. And the game feels small in scope compared to previous console entries in the series. It just wasn't worth the 5 year wait.

Man your scaring me here..... I just got my motion plus and is really excited to play this. I didn't really think Twilight Princess was that great and you say it is on par?

Best Zelda in 3D so far is Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker comes very close. Twlight Princess was good but not great.

I'm not finished yet (pretty sure I'm fairly close to the end, though) and thus far I think it's much better than Twilight Princess.

Thanks for the heads up... I got the game a while ago but have not opened it yet. Anxiously waiting to play once I have more time on my hands :)

I actually did that part second, but didn't end up triggering that bug. Something to remember for my Hero Mode run, though.

Has anyone seen the UK Wii advert for this? It's vomit inducing, put me off buying the game.

"I just want to be his hero again."

It just involves talking to someone at the wrong time, shouldn't be anything more than a small patch.

I'm assuming a replacement disc for Japan will be released, like Tales of Graces? Send in, get replacement.

Well, they offered replacements if you had a problem with the TP game-ending bug (which meant saving and quitting at a very specific point in the game). I imagine they'll end up doing that again.

I'm in that mining dungeon and so far I enjoy it more than Ocarina. They cut the annoying stuff to a minimum and keep it fun. I really need some voice acting, though. I'm tired of reading every bit of minutiae. The sword mechanics are great. This is the way I want to fight enemies now.

Great to hear, so far I've been reading mixed reviews from people. But I disagree on the voice acting though. Also I wish link was still left handed.

The more I play Mario Kart Wii, the more alienated by the voice acting I feel. I'm almost certain Zelda remained silent thanks to the Miyamoto realising how shit Mario turned out in the voice acting area. The gibberish (AND the silent protagonist) in Ōkami was perfect for my money.

huh? mario's been voice acted since super mario 64, and i've never seen any problems with that.
what i dislike though is the voice acting with donkey kong characters. the monkey noises they had in dkc back on the SNES were far superior.

donkey kong in dk64 makes the game sound like some gay porn.

nothing in this game please me when i watch videos on youtube.
I find the graphics atrocious and I'm also not a fan of motion controls.
Ocarina was great and I loved ww design but other than that I'm kinda bored with zelda games nowadays.

I disagree with voice acting too.
Im sure no voices help getting "in the game's universe" more.

I don't see what skyrim has invented more compared to other TES?
I love both series but this point seems unjustified.

Everything about Skyrim is better than what's come before in that series. There is no comparison. The dragon combat, the addition of level designers and not just "seeded" dungeons. The spine-tingling resonance of the music and lore. Bethesda learns and pushes harder for the next one. Nintendo EAD just swaps a coat of paint and muddles the control interface to usually mixed results. Watching me play it, my fiance says Skyward Sword is just like Twilight Princess. The few things that set the two games apart are very superficial to me. Moreso between the two DS versions, absolutely boring. Nintendo EAD rests on their laurels and still gets rewarded with glowing reviews. As long as this continues to happen, you won't see anything but iterations of what you played before, and this is sad considering how long their development cycles are. It shows when development teams care for what they're doing enough to throw out everything and build with brand new parts. Nintendo EAD gives a new paint job, an oil change, and slips on the gold-foiled steering wheel, sits back and watches the money come in. It won't work forever, not as long as there are teams commited to raising the bar along with their profits. Nintendo claims to practice "blue ocean strategy" but not really where it counts in my opinion. I want new ideas from the ground up and not just new ways to play games that are essentially unchanged from a decade ago. At the very least they should put out more games that are witty enough to make you really feel something, like Mother 3.

I don't mind Mario's little yips and "Here we go's" all that much except in the Mario Advance series. That got pretty ridiculous. I also think that unless they're going for real professional quality voice acting (ME1&2 are the only ones that's really done it well, and arguably Persona 4), game characters should remain silent. IMO voice acting has been the single greatest factor in the decline of Final Fantasy.

Grunts, short vocal gestures, and gibberish are perfect for Zelda since they prevent the game from seeming eerily quiet, but don't send it into facepalm territory.
