Well, I've put about 20 hours into it now, and the wow factor is still there. I'm level 19 and still discovering tons of stuff. Have barely tapped smithing and enchantment. Haven't really touched magic at all (short of what I could find in Whiterun.) Mostly focusing on stealth/archery/dual-wielding 1handed weapons. I've barely left the area surrounding Whiterun (I guess it's called the 'whiterun hold'.) There's clearly a ton of game I haven't even touched. Now maybe that 'ton of game' doesn't offer much I haven't seen (and the dungeons are starting to get tiresome), but I wouldn't be surprised to get another 20-40 hours of real entertainment out of this game before I start getting bored of it. And then there's always the possibility of starting over with a completely different build (personally though I think an all melee 2hander build would be really boring.)

Trying to get to the meat of the game I find out that most the effort was put into the sandbox but none of the events that take place in it. Not trying to rag on the game at all... I'm hoping that I'll feel different about it. Like I said I loved Deus Ex, but I didn't like Fallout.

Are you talking about the original Deus Ex or Human Revolution? The original was FAR more open world. I'd give the new one a 7.5 for design and script but a 5.0 for open world and a truly atrocious AI. The original is damned near perfection. I found the new one enjoyable but constraining. It was....not open enough. That being said, I generally hate open world games, except for the last couple of Elder Scrolls games (Oblivion and Skyrim). I usually find them tedious, but there's something about being outdoors in the forest and mountains, discovering temples and abandoned fortresses and going through all the well-written sidequest that just sucks me in utterly. It's the environment as much as the gameplay style (1st person real-time combat with pause menu options).

That being said, I HATED Fallout 3 with a burning passion that knows no bounds. I found it tedious, uninspired and just unenjoyable. They're practically the same game, but no VATS system (thank god) and no tediously bland post-apocalyptic BS. The writing is better in the Elder Scrolls series too IMO. And fighting hand to hand is more gratifying :D It's just....my kind of game I guess. I wouldn't consider it a traditional open world game like GTA3 or Infamous or Arkham City (gag) though. Not sure entirely why...

Got the PC version of this on order now (thanks to some Amazon credit and the buy 1 get 1 50% off deal they have right now.) My system handled Fallout 3 just fine, so should I be OK on this one?

27 hours in, completed:

8 main quests and only got a hint of what is actually going on
3 companions quests
1 side quest
about 30 miscelaneous bits and pieces

Basically nothing of consequence whatsoever! Gaming bliss.

I was talking about the new Deus Ex. I loved Mass Effect and the new Deus Ex was like a little metal gear along with some mass effect so it really appealed to me.

I think I'm sold now... gonna get the 360 version soon.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Gah, how long have I been waiting for Skyrim? And NOW my computer decides to go kaput. Oh well I got to play the opening 20 minutes anyway.

Now, do I spend $250 on replacement parts for my PC or just buy a 360 instead? Decisions, decisions ...

Better buy the replacement parts... So you won't be tempted to cave in to those cave ports. :P

Well I was MAME'ing those anyway, so yeah, obviously can't now ...

But yes, I will most likely get the parts. I can't not have a decent desktop. I've tried ... well I'm doing it now too ... and it blows. Right now I have a crappy old Toshiba notebook hooked up instead. For anything except browsing shmups forum it blows mega hard.

I wanted to make some awesome gear so I leveled smithing up to 100 and filled out the perk tree. My dragon scale suit and daedric bow were nice, but I wanted them to have powerful enchantments so I leveled up enchanting to 100 and filled out that perk tree, too. By this point I had figured out that there were potions and gear that could actually enhance my enchanting and smithing abilities beyond their cap, so I leveled up alchemy to 100 and got the perks I needed to create the strongest versions of them. Now I'd realized that there were enchantments I could put on my gear to boost my alchemy to create even more powerful potions, so I used my potions of fortify enchantment to create a set. Now I was able to brew more powerful potions of fortify enchantment than I'd used before, which meant I could remake the same set I'd made to further boost my alchemy even further. Eventually this capped out and I was able to brew the most powerful potions possible, so I made a batch of godly elixirs of fortify enchantment and fortify smithing which allowed me to create what I believe to be the most poweful weapons and armor craftable in all of Skyrim. Then a guard cracked a baby joke about me as I walked by.

1) Out of curiosity, I'm playing a cat, and everyone always makes these 'cat' comments (I'll make you into a rug, etc.) Do any of the other races get constant slurs, or is it just the cats?

2) I really love the natural leveling/skill progression in this game. I tried to do a little power-gaming last night and it was incredibly un-fun. Then I played the game in a more natural way and it was like I was just going with the stream. I think this is the first game you really don't have to think that hard about the game mechanics, just have fun.

3) Where is everyones' Skyrim marriage videos?

4) Necronopticous> Damn!

Can someone give me some tips on what to do and how to get a bit stronger? I'm level 6 and I'm just pretty much getting creamed in any caves I go in - it's a bit disheartening. I can't even kill some animals! :(

I have to clear out this fort in order to join the imperial guard or some shite, and I get in the door and theres three people hacking me to death before I can do anything - how do you guys level up early in the game and where can I go to get a couple of decent weapons like a one handed sword or whatever, think I have about 1500 gold.

Are you playing melee? Put a perk into 1 or 2h weapons to up damage 20% Same for heavy or light armor. Same for archery. If you're primarily using magic, obviously get the perks that bring spell cost down. Other than that, scrounge the best gear you can find, and if possible improve it through smithing. Get a follower to help you not get obliterated.

Beyond that, normal strategies--try to lure out enemies at once; keep an eye on your health and quaff potions when needed, don't be afraid to run away, save often.

To get a few levels I recommend going to the inn at Riverwood (I think it is called that, the first town with the blacksmith who points you on your way) and ask for work. They will mark a suitable dungeon on your map with a 'kill the leader' objective. Doing it this way, I believe, spawns enemies at the appropriate level. By the time you have cleared a few of these you will easily have a good few suits of armour, a range of weapons and a lot of loot to sell for cash. Always do runs to each shop when in town and buy up some potions.

Also, and I know that this may seem blasphemous to some, but crank down the difficulty if you want. I play through games like this at a range of different difficulty levels. Usually default to start with and then adjust depending on the experience that I want to have.

I also recommend that you pick a weapon style, if melee is your focus, and invest some serious perks in damage output. Damage output sucks in this game so far in my experience. I have a skysteel war axe that is improved as far as it will go as well as a bunch of damage perks and I still have to wail on enemies a fair amount before they go down sometimes.

You may want to play the main quest a little until you get some shouts. I find that using the knockback shout helped a lot early on, and fire breath is great against a lot of stuff even as a one word shout.

I highly recommend the following mods for anyone playing on PC:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=136
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18

These made my character look a million times better. I really struggled to create an attractive looking character and basically gave up after a point, but it ended up working out once I put these mods into place. If you want to go a step further there is already a full nude mod.

Also, this one is just awesome:

I'm an Argonian and everyone continues to refer to me as "hey, Lizard" or "that lizard".
The universe is neither hostile nor friendly, simply indifferent.

Even without my umbillical cable attached I still have over 12,000 plates of fortified armour AND I have my AT Field! There's NO WAY I can lose!!

I find it funny how Argonians looked like gray or green skinned humans in Elder Scrolls Arena. They looked more lizard like starting with Daggerfall, though the Kajhit still looked like humans with a tail in that game. I should check to see if people react differently to those races in Arena and Daggerfall.

I'm thinking of getting this, Marrowind, and Oblivion, though I'm on the fence. I like what I played of Arena and Daggerfall (last I checked, both offered for free on the official site). I don't think my PC could run Skyrim optiumally, though. I will probably be getting a 360 for Christmas, so I'm thinking of getting Skyrim for that.

Glitches seem to be the norm for TES games. Daggerfall especially, has a ton of them, even after the patches.

sjewkestheloon> Great recommendations! Pretty much what I did when I started the game.

I think the great think about Skyrim is you can just roll with whatever works, and if something else unfolds later, it's perfectly all right. This isn't dark souls goddamnit!

Man, I just got to Morthal and was expecting a city, not this tiny little village. Not even a real shop. Jesus. I think the first town you go to, Riverfall or whatever, is bigger than this piece of trash. Seriously, get a church and a shop or don't even pretend!

well only level 9 myself and around 15 hours in I would recommend doing as many side quests and getting enough gold to train to buy spells and learn as much archery as possible and use an enchanted bow, heal spells on the left and mace on the right hand when the enemy closes the distance this has also been working well for me :)

Hmm Companions quest line was a bit short. I think it was about 7 quests long and didn't really make any sense considering you are supposed to have formed this great bond with your guild members and you only actually end up talking to the various members once or twice each.

Quests were fun though, and the last section was cool, but as a quest chain it has absolutely nothing on the other Elder Scrolls games with regards to length. I was expecting that to be the first section of quests before I start going to different wards to meet other branches of the Companions too but turns out they only have one lonely building in the entire province.

Where's mah fyters gild?!

Hopefully some of the other guilds are a bit more in depth.

Picked up the regeneration perk, and suddenly healing in combat is a real option. I wonder if there are some other perks I've overlooked that are insanely useful.

Put soul trap on both my swords and bow for 1 sec (used very little charge), filled up a ton of gems, enchanted all that junk I find in dungeons (+ what I smith) for mad loot and leveling. Can't wait to max out enchantment to do two handed combos like weapon 1: weakness to fire, weapon 2: fire + soul trap. Of course I could do this right now minus soul trap for what I assume would be insane damage.

I doubt I've played a 5th of the game yet. Jesus.

A bug may occur that if Lydia is dead, her corpse will appear at the wedding ceremony and you will fail the marriage quest - a work around is to drag the corpse out of sight (nearby) and try again. (Drag Lydia's body to the basement, go to the house of who you wished to marry, wait 24 hours and then talk to her).
Oh dear.

Someone should mod an "undead" status into the game. Would be even better than vampirism I think.

If you're playing on PC, I'm sure you can change the quest status through the console. I remember having to do that a few times in Oblivion, and also FO3 and NV. Annoying because you know that you've completed it, but it doesn't clear from your log, so it makes you think you did something wrong.
