Skyrim
Picked this up today, played it for a few hours and I am mightily impressed. Great sense of scale, just a real urge to get out and explore. As a bit of an elder scrolls fanatic I have been awaiting this for a good while.
Anyone else picked this up today?

Not yet, will maybe when I have a little time to devote to it as Oblivion sucked hundreds of hours of my life away.
I've heard that people playing the PC version are experiencing a lot of glitches and game crashes. Of course, this is Bethesda, so no one is surprised in the least.

I picked it up today but I have been at work all day so I haven't cracked it open yet. I'm dying to play, I'm just hoping my janky video card doesn't fuck me.

I love the series but im gonna wait until I upgrade my PCs GFX card.
Besides Im not the type to revisit long singleplayer games so ill be better off waiting until the bugs are gone and expansions are out and wave goodbye to family and friends for a month

Ditto this. I'm curious how well it'll be received among Dark Souls players.TrevHead (TVR) wrote:Besides Im not the type to revisit long singleplayer games so ill be better off waiting until the bugs are gone and expansions are out and wave goodbye to family and friends for a month

11 hours in thus far. I cosplayed in my living room for this. It's pretty much perfect as far as Elder Scrolls goes. I'm more than pleased so far with pretty much everything. I don't even know why I'm on the computer.

Completely typical awesome Drauch post. I've put about 5 hours in (all in one shot), playing a cute cat girl that throws fireballs at people. I will make a big nordic man marry a cat girl. I hope everyone in skyrim is open, cuz some dude named Sven is gonna have to pretend he isn't a furry.drauch wrote:I cosplayed in my living room for this.
I'm still a bit bewildered by the absence of stats, but does it really matter when I can hit someone in the face with a sword while shooting fire at them with my other hand? I guess if you still want stats, there's always Dark Souls. Stats were meaning less and less in Oblivion anyway.

Re: Skyrim
So is the level up system in this game any better than Oblivion? I never really got into the last game because I found the level up system extremely tedious. You had to carefully micromanage which skills you used or else you would screw up your stat gains. It was a huge pain. That and everything always matched your level and equipment tier, so you never felt like you were getting anywhere =P.
Re: Skyrim
The Oblivion leveling system it completely gone. It's more like Fallout.

Re: Skyrim
It feels like a mix of both, with Diablo II style skill trees. You gain levels by using skills rather than getting XP for doing random actions, but all skills contribute to your progress equally as far as I can tell.
Then when you level up you can point one point into basically any of the skill trees. Should probably take ~15 points to fill a tree but you have to level the skill to open up new nodes on the tree, rather than just increase your character level.
Been playing on 360; since my initial issue things have been fine and while I'm not at all a fan of the interface (visually or functionally) it's starting to pull me in. Thankfully I've got most of next week off.

I requested off work and now everyone hates me. Doesn't matter. Played Skyrim all day. This is me cosplaying before the midnight launch.

Maybe I'll give this a try, then. Sounds like the leveling system is a lot more intuitive now. Diablo II-esque skill trees, I can deal with.
Lol, Drauch. That's flippin' hilarious, dude =D.

Re: Skyrim
That cosplay is awesome. I would most definitely not fuck with you.
So many nice touches in this game! I was walking along a path last night when I heard drunken singing. I walked into the shadows and hid behind a tree to get a look at who it was. It was clearly a group of bandits so I snook up behind the group and executed two before they could even retaliate!
Also the random missions that you can pick up from inns are brilliant, or at least they are on first impression. Want something to do? Talk to the guy at the inn and he will send you to x unvisited location to fetch y or kill z bandit leader etc scoring some loot and new map locations on the way.
This time I will be playing comprehensively but what I am really looking forward to is doing some serious roleplay.

Re: Skyrim
I've had a few pretty awesome things happen:
1.) I was in this cave fucking up some pussy necromancers. I'm the ultimate sneaky mofo, so I was dodging their traps like crazy. I came to one spot where I heard the creaking bones of a skeleton. I snuck up on the bastard and destroyed him with an arrow. His head rolled down the hill and into the hall and landed on a pressure plate, which caused a burning cauldron to fall from the ceiling and land on the floor that was covered in oil. Instantly the oil caught flame and a wall of fire rushed down the hall just as I got out of the way. It was excellent.
2.) I was on my way doing some misc quest. I kept hearing someone crying and wailing that they needed help, but it was dark and I couldn't see a damn thing. Finally, I decided to just blow my cover and use a torch. A whiny Dark Elf was sitting on a rock and needing some healing potions. I was out at the time, so I listened to his lame story. Him and a couple of buddies went into a cave to hunt some bears, but a group of Spriggans destroyed his buddies while he narrowly escaped. I hoped some health would be in there, so I ventured forth. Killed two bears and the three spriggans, as well as finding a nice bow. I came back outside and the fucker was already dead. A damn dragon and came by and nailed him and was now waiting for him.
These stories are mediocre, but if anything they display the random encounters you can have and why I love The Elder Scrolls series. Soooooo much to do!

Bethesda should put that mountain dew hat in the game as a boots of blinding speed type item.

Almost bought this while out shopping, but had a feeling the PAL version will not work with my NTSC-J X360. I know some other Bethesda games aren't compatible.

Agreed. That interface might be OK for consoles, but for a PC game that's ass.Necronopticous wrote:I'm very early in. First impression: the menus suck ass.
Re: Skyrim
Have people with the 360 version installed it or not? I've heard problems with low res textures being used due to a bug? Hmm. But it's only a few of them? I'd much rather install it.

How is everyone with the lack of stats? Should I miss not knowing that my strength is 48?

I was wondering this too, does the exclusion of stats actually simplify the game or like in a JRPG make the game a confusing mess?CMoon wrote:How is everyone with the lack of stats? Should I miss not knowing that my strength is 48?

Re: Skyrim
Not really bothered with the reduction of the number of stats. I like those stats in Morrowind as they made a fair and interesting difference relative to the difficulty curve. In Oblivion they annoyed me after a few playthroughs as I found that you had to really work stat gains to make the difficulty curve work without adapting the slider. This time seems to be truer expression of the 'use something to make it better' setup. If anything I would have been interested to see them remove the Stamina, Health, Magika option and link every improvement of those to the ability gains.
What I REALLY would like to see in my RPGs is a larger range of options of how I play. I would love to be able to pick a 'full stat option' where the game gives you the option to tweak every little detail and also an 'action option' where stats are more or less invisible with a range of things inbetween. As a first tentative step towards this kind of thing I applaud the Hardcore mode of Fallout New Vegas.
On another point, I can't wait to start another character to see what is and is not 'placed loot'. I have been having fun jaunting off on the 'kill this bandit leader in x unexplored cave/hut' saving up for a house and I have been finding some great pieces of armour suited to my build, some brilliant one handed weapons, again suited to my build, alongside the usual trinkets and jewelery.
I wonder if I had leveled archery, would there be bows instead of short swords?
