Once we run out of non-renewable resources -- or at least when they become very expensive -- consider utopia achieved. The market rules all things. It always amazes me that the same people who bitch about high gas prices also bitch about a lack of investment in alternative energy.

I think China will have all of this covered in the next 5 to 10 years. They're already halfway there on your second point.

My choices would be:

- People stop crying about nuclear power stations because of the inherant risk of nuclear fallout when infact nuclear power is cleaner than a traditional coal fired powerplanet (which incidentally releases more radioactivity into the air than a nuclear plant does) it's the best stop gap we have to a renewable energy source or a dyson sphere. - By the way ITER and DEMO are still a good 60 or more years away.

- Buckminsterfullerenes allow us to build a space elevator and/or we deploy a mass driver in space and start mining asteroids for our growing industrial needs (think giant war mongering spacefleets)

First, basic evolution means that we shouldn't be cutting people out of the gene pool because they're stupid (poor/no education, not actually mentally handicapped). Second, we tried something like this back in the 20s/30s. Was fairly common to sterilize the slow and the socially unacceptable. Kind of came to an end following the whole, "Germany tries to purify the race" thing. Though not immediately. Alan Turing, one of the fathers of modern computer science and a key contributor to Britain cracking Enigma, was chemically castrated in 1952 for being gay.

Poor example as he wouldn't really be contributing to the gene pool anyways, but my point is that as much good as we'd think it would do, any kind of controlled breeding is bad and just leads to a lot of problems and moral quandaries.

A better thing to hope for is that society reaches a point where it's too enlightened for people who keep themselves intentionally ignorant and stupid are just too unattractive to get laid in the first place.

Thank you Drauch. I was about to post something regarding how things were only getting worse, and this almost entirely due to (or at least hugely compounded by) our 7 billion strong population. Sex robots and restrictions on birthing would be something worth looking forward to. I know this is a bad thing to say as an educator, but seriously, most parents I meet with are 1) unqualified to be parents, 2) appear to regret having the damn kid to begin with.

What I mean is, what would the carrying capacity for humans be without electricity in particular (think refrigeration of foods, purification of water), readily available fuel to transport foods to all populated areas, etc. Pro-baby assholes will point out the earth could probably sustain 11 billion in the current situation, but that involves turning vast tracts of wilderness into farming monocultures, and further irrigating areas which can't normally sustain crops. In other words, the human population is probably well above carrying capacity.

All you need to do is perform an little mental experiment. What would happen to Los Angeles if all the power went out for an indefinite period, and there was no gas to transport food/aid in (or more realistically, escape the ensuing cannibal apocalypse)?

I suspect 1 billion isn't a bad number. Maybe we knock the fuck out of rampant breeding until we can get closer to those numbers.

Oh yeah, and seriously, all the talk about sustainable energy, recycling, etc. It's all bullshit until you control human growth. It's great we're talking electric cars, solar panels and windmills, but all your really doing is very, very slightly decreasing the acceleration of everything going to shit.

Color me confused. Are we running out of electricity sometime soon? Starvation is essentially a non-issue in industrialized countries. Food is cheap, and I haven't noticed a particular lack of lebensraum.
