Once we run out of non-renewable resources -- or at least when they become very expensive -- consider utopia achieved. The market rules all things. It always amazes me that the same people who bitch about high gas prices also bitch about a lack of investment in alternative energy.Ruldra wrote:Besides that, I'd like to see a new form of economy capable of propelling humanity forward without endlessly sucking non-renewable resources. I'm not anti-aid, but in a sense I agree. We are spending funny money to help other countries when we don't even have it to fix our own problems. Home first, then the world. Unfortunately we're in bed with so many countries, it seems much of our "helping hand" is obligatory.DJ Incompetent wrote:-People suddenly realize it's stupid to keep sending aid to Africa to reinforce helplessness and launch major education initiatives to have them take care of themselves.

The idea of the mosquito is way more annoying than his bite.
That peaceful way forward sounds horrible to me,kinda like age of crystal.
I'm watching zeitgest 3 right now and they try to think of "new earth system",and all I think about it is whatafk what!
they are all with good intention but they miss the point.
why do we have to rationalize everything and plan everything thinking hard?
we are just bad seed and evolution has made me unable to walk where I want barefoot without crying.

I want to be around when:
- the Catholic Church is deposed as the government of Vatican City, ending the notion of "state visits" by the Pope
- EA, Ubisoft, Atari, etc. get together and make their wet-dream PC-based game console, and it's hacked on release day
- the last proprietary "content platform" (Steam, Xbox Live, PSN, NintendoWare, Kindle, iTunes, etc. etc. etc.) shuts down, having been rendered irrelevant by micropatronage/crowdfunding/whatever and a suite of open protocols/formats
- the USA elects our first openly atheist president
- the first self-sustaining off-world human colony is established
- ReactOS runs Crysis 2 on par with Windows

My choices would be:
-Seeing a manned mission to Mars or even just going back to the goddamn moon.
- People stop crying about nuclear power stations because of the inherant risk of nuclear fallout when infact nuclear power is cleaner than a traditional coal fired powerplanet (which incidentally releases more radioactivity into the air than a nuclear plant does) it's the best stop gap we have to a renewable energy source or a dyson sphere. - By the way ITER and DEMO are still a good 60 or more years away.
- Buckminsterfullerenes allow us to build a space elevator and/or we deploy a mass driver in space and start mining asteroids for our growing industrial needs (think giant war mongering spacefleets)
-Seeing halleys comet would be nice
- On a similar note, im not sure if it's either Betelgeuse or Rigel (one of the stars in the contellation of Orion) is well overdue to go supernova, seeing that would be pretty cool,.
- Seeing Antarctica become a subtropical paradise due to continental drift.
The universe is neither hostile nor friendly, simply indifferent.

See, I have two problems with this. First, basic evolution means that we shouldn't be cutting people out of the gene pool because they're stupid (poor/no education, not actually mentally handicapped). Second, we tried something like this back in the 20s/30s. Was fairly common to sterilize the slow and the socially unacceptable. Kind of came to an end following the whole, "Germany tries to purify the race" thing. Though not immediately. Alan Turing, one of the fathers of modern computer science and a key contributor to Britain cracking Enigma, was chemically castrated in 1952 for being gay.Vyxx wrote:This.drauch wrote:A law in every country where you have to pass an IQ test to be able to breed.
Poor example as he wouldn't really be contributing to the gene pool anyways, but my point is that as much good as we'd think it would do, any kind of controlled breeding is bad and just leads to a lot of problems and moral quandaries.
A better thing to hope for is that society reaches a point where it's too enlightened for people who keep themselves intentionally ignorant and stupid are just too unattractive to get laid in the first place.

evolution in humans is totally fucked anyway. thanks to modern medicine we have loads of people surviving and reproducing that never would have made it otherwise. it's all up to us now to guide our own evolution, with modern medicine. once we master genetic engineering, and eliminate all disease, we'll just start making improvements as we see fit.

Thank you Drauch. I was about to post something regarding how things were only getting worse, and this almost entirely due to (or at least hugely compounded by) our 7 billion strong population. Sex robots and restrictions on birthing would be something worth looking forward to. I know this is a bad thing to say as an educator, but seriously, most parents I meet with are 1) unqualified to be parents, 2) appear to regret having the damn kid to begin with.drauch wrote:- Fully functioning sex androids

Re: Events you hope you'll live long enough to see
Should start with an idea of what an actual sustainable human population below natural carrying capacity would look like. What I mean is, what would the carrying capacity for humans be without electricity in particular (think refrigeration of foods, purification of water), readily available fuel to transport foods to all populated areas, etc. Pro-baby assholes will point out the earth could probably sustain 11 billion in the current situation, but that involves turning vast tracts of wilderness into farming monocultures, and further irrigating areas which can't normally sustain crops. In other words, the human population is probably well above carrying capacity.drauch wrote: Okay. No breeding from anyone for 10 years.
All you need to do is perform an little mental experiment. What would happen to Los Angeles if all the power went out for an indefinite period, and there was no gas to transport food/aid in (or more realistically, escape the ensuing cannibal apocalypse)?
I suspect 1 billion isn't a bad number. Maybe we knock the fuck out of rampant breeding until we can get closer to those numbers.
Oh yeah, and seriously, all the talk about sustainable energy, recycling, etc. It's all bullshit until you control human growth. It's great we're talking electric cars, solar panels and windmills, but all your really doing is very, very slightly decreasing the acceleration of everything going to shit.

It's cool, all we have to do is to terramorph the Mars, then find some other place to terramorph. Just think about all those jobs and technological progress it'll bring along, all without even asking "why?"CMoon wrote:Oh yeah, and seriously, all the talk about sustainable energy, recycling, etc. It's all bullshit until you control human growth. Color me confused. Are we running out of electricity sometime soon? Starvation is essentially a non-issue in industrialized countries. Food is cheap, and I haven't noticed a particular lack of lebensraum.CMoon wrote:Should start with an idea of what an actual sustainable human population below natural carrying capacity would look like.
