btw I offer no guarantee of accuracy with this, it's just using the MAME / MESS nes driver to actually run nes stuff in MAME.IseeThings wrote:http://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/2011/11/1 ... ame-0-144/spl wrote:Why would there be Recca for MAME? MAME nes recca
(the project is just a combination of MAME and MESS)

Re: Too close for comfort? the revival?
Its a shame the ps2 era CAVE games uses the same board as the current stuff. But I suppose a removal of all SH-3 is for the best.
I think its about time I updated from Shmup mame 2.2 to 144. Is there any build that has working save/ load for the cave games?
recca on mame ftw

SH3 confuzzlement
(Since this new post is very relevant to the topic, and because this is not primarily an emulation forum, I've merged this into TCFC thread /nZ)
I shall keep this very simple:
1) Did SH3 emulation hit MAME and I missed it?
2) Did it work? Sound and Video?
3) Was the purported SH3 core dynarec or some other ungodly hack?
I've been on hiatus for about 4 months after Dreamcast kinda made me sick of shmups (don't ask why, it just did). The last time I signed in, everyone was still busy blasting demul for being demul, and MAME was still of the firm stance that emulating CV1000 games would bring about the end of the known universe after causing our world to implode upon itself.
Then I sign in today, and it's like a goddam digital atomic bomb went off some time during my absence, and everyone is just kinda standing around staring at the dissipating pre-rendered atomic mushroom cloud chatting about slowdown emulation and how awesome it is to play CV1000 SH3 games.
So I'm thinking, "K, self, maybe demul did something everyone said they'd immediately regret if they ever did it?".
Much to my surprise, it wasn't demul. It was MAME. From what I've gathered, SH3 support crept up over the course of a week, became workable, made a lot of people happy- then CAVE sent a bunch of ninjas to the MAMEdev HQ and made it all go away (though I'm sure we'll never know about that for sure, because ninjas are crafty like that).
So, um, yeah.
All I can find is a bunch of chatter bouncing around like echos from a distant event. And youtube videos. And some GIT commits of some really horrible hacks, and some mention of a dynarec/UML SH3 core, but I can't find any code or commit evidence to back that one up.
So what happened here?
Was SH3 just a passing hack? Or was this shit "fo real" and I totally missed it?

Re: SH3 confuzzlement
It was real, 0.143u9 is the last version of mame that supports the sh3 stuff. Although most of us use a custom build known as "slowpoke" which allows us to manually set the blitter delay for accurate slowdown, you can find it posted a few pages back.

Re: Too close for comfort? the revival?
The SH3 MAME driver was a collaboration between Demul team, MAME (Haze mostly, as far as I know), and some other guys. Who did it is, in this case, less relevant than the fact of its existence. MAME has decided to drop the driver after a letter from Cave, but Demul team keeps on developing it further as far as I'm aware, so it's not dead.
It's most likely a good thing it disappeared from MAME, since Cave won't be as afraid to release new SH3-based boards/ports, such as Mushihimesama 1.5, and who knows what else they come up with in an attempt to get rid of spare SH3 boards.

Btw, why are you guys so fascinated by Recca in MAME? It's been playable—and perfectly emulated—in Nintendulator and Nestopia for years. :P

Thanks to kevenz for posting the slowpoke v2 binary. Does anyone have a 64-bit binary for the official 143u9 build? I would like to have one to compare.

Cave seems to have requested that Google block search results for the ROM file names of the SH3 games.
Wonder if they'll resort to a lawsuit if DFK/Akai Katana are added through an unofficial build.

Re: Too close for comfort? the revival?
I really don't see the point in any of this.
The games won't be in future builds for awhile, but eventually, they'll be added back. Until then, anyone who wants to play the games can just use an earlier version or metallic's build or some other frontend/hack, and anyone who wants the roms will find them. The genie's out of the bottle and it's not going back in.

Re: Too close for comfort? the revival?
at first i was like:WOOOOW,so many cave games on mame now,but the performance isn`t really good, tried the sh3 games on mac osx under sdlmame with my macbook pro and under win7 with a dedicated mame pc,performance is nearly equal
Mushihimesama:seems to be the one worth playing, although stage 3 is really a mess,it stutters every few seconds with extreme sound glitches-never played it before, never had an ps2,i must say i like this more than futari, don`t know why, maybe the stages are cooler, maybe its the boss attack patterns,i love that game
Mushi Futari:Black Label seems ok with the slowpoke version, rest is a mess against the xbox360 port..
Pink Sweets:stuttering at the beginning and when the bosses approach, but its ok,at least i can check it out as i sold my xbox360 and never got my hands on the port
MuchiMuchiPork:same as Pink Sweets, stutters at the very beginning but then it becomes fast but there seems to be messed up slowdown at the bosses-and im must say that this neat game could be the reason that i`ll be getting a xbox360 again,i just love this whacko style with the little pigs, its just awesome
Ibara:constant framerate problems,runs too slow
seems to be something wrong with those 3(PS,MMP,IB),maybe the rom dumps are faulty,as the performance especially at the start is horrible
Espgaluda2:as good as Mushi 1,worth playing,i don`t understand why the performance is miles better than in ibara to be honest..
Deathsmiles:horrible
ALL of the games have sound glitches, missing or false slowdowns and stutter issues when there is much action on screen, kinda ruins the experience by start,so it isn`t the real deal, why complain about subpar playable mame versions?my 2cents about cave`s request on removing the drivers:redundant reaction, its the same with their "only japan xbox360" politics, are they really thinking everyone that is interested in their games is getting a japanese xbox360 and those ports or a fullblown arcade cab+pcb? come on,its 2011 .-)
while i respect their work to the fullest, these games are 5 years old, some older.it is their problem if they still developed the newer ones on the same hardware than the older ones.there are enough people that would never buy an xbox360 just for some niche shooters, have no chance on getting their hands to the arcade versions or they dont even know that such games exist.so,these people wouldn`t have played these games anyways if they arent emulated, but if they are, many people will recognize:"hey these guys make damn good shooters, wait there are ports for the xbox360 of them? i`ll grab an xbox360 as soon as i can".and those guys having a full blown cab at home with the pcb`s saying:"yeah damn fine, too early for emulation"-get off your high horse, there are people who can`t affort such things and also want to play.simple as that.

Re: Too close for comfort? the revival?
The performance is down to underpowered pc the sound glitches ONLY occur when the framerate drops below 100% . Strange with ibara though? permanent 100% here from start to finish . I get 100% on ibara , ibara kuro , all mushi original modes havent played maniac or ultra not really a fan of purple >_> pink sweets minus minor stage start and midboss dips , espgaluda 2 seemed fine aswell , muchi same as sweets and deathsmiles only dips in the scrolling down cave stage .
Re: Too close for comfort? the revival?
that could be the problem mate,as i cant afford a new MAME PC system, its my older MAME pc(c2d 2,1ghz,4gig ram, geforce 5900something).so,only true fans will spent the money on a new rockstable MAME pc for those games..and theres the thing, why forbid the driver for the games if a really beastly machine is needed anyways .-)

My guess is that they probably wont show up for a while since it needs "someone" to donate the PCBs which that means theyll probably be a fan. well, yeah, the long-hand isn't quite as pretty as the shorthand 'mame64 nes mecca' but as long as a system is 'simple' (one slot, the majority of consoles are) and has a software list (the major ones do), and you have the correct roms for the software list (which sometimes differ from the Good*** sets because MESS uses the -proper- roms, like MAME where possible) then the shorthand works.yosai wrote:Rolls of the tongue.

Well, I think we all want to see these games preserved for posterity, the problem's that there's no way of doing so without handing out an unlimited supply of free copies to the masses.TrevHead (TVR) wrote:My guess is that they probably wont show up for a while since it needs "someone" to donate the PCBs which that means theyll probably be a fan. Actually with the driver out there anybody with the PCBs and skill can buy the tools they need (which if they can afford the PCBs then can probably afford) and make their own backups, adding them to the driver to test them.Estebang wrote:Well, I think we all want to see these games preserved for posterity, the problem's that there's no way of doing so without handing out an unlimited supply of free copies to the masses.TrevHead (TVR) wrote:My guess is that they probably wont show up for a while since it needs "someone" to donate the PCBs which that means theyll probably be a fan. They don't have to post them on the internet for somebody else to add, they don't have to share them at this current time, but they can now make their own backups, ensure that those backups are correct, and keep them somewhere safe.
The driver being around makes it easier for somebody to NOT have to give an unlimited supply of free copies, because they can do it themselves, and feel more secure about their purchases.

I think it's safe to say less than .01% of Cave board owners are comfortable removing surface mounted chips from their thousand dollar boards but it's a nice thought.
