Re: Too close for comfort? the revival?

Post by Drachenherz »

I'm running the slowpoke edition now. On my Desktop, an i5 750 quadcore, 2.6 Ghz, 8GB ram and a GTX470, all the new cave-stuff runs at a steady 100%, except for the level-starts and just before the bosses at MMP and Ibara. There is even some moderate Slowdown (still running at 100%) in Mushi Futari BL - but unfortunately, not enough. With the standard 143u8-Version, it dips below 100% when there is much action on screen, especially with ibara and mmp when there are many golden nuggets flying aroung. I run mame in direct 3d-mode.

On my laptop, an i3-350M 2,26 GHz dualcore, a nvidia 310m graphics card and 4 gb of ram, it's veeery choppy with regular 143u8, the sound "hiccups" and it's at 80% at max... This is in direct 3d.

When I run it with the slowpoke edition, it is more stable, but still at max 90% in game, running it in direct 3d. Then I changed the settings to direct draw. The scanlines look like shit now, but... The games (all of them, incl. mmp, ibara...) run at a blasting 100%! Wowzers, wasnt expecting that.

Now... why is it that directdraw is faster than the direct 3d mode? Shouldn't direct 3d be the fastest mode, as the graphic card takes up more workload?

And is there a way to make scanlines look better in direct draw? I'm using the "scanlines75x2_j4" filter - all the other filters really looke like ass and nothing like proper scanlines should look like with direct draw...

Any tipps?

Edit: Btw, I'm using the 64-bit versions on win7 home premium 64 bit.

I've found that varies between computers and also builds. Shmupmame does a really good job with DirectDraw on my legacy PC but using Direct3D is slow. On my Athlon computer in my room (the main one I use now) DirectDraw runs it somewhat and D3D seems to crash my computer for some reason (at least that's what it did three times yesterday).

I've got all the cave stuff working using 64Bit OS7 (i5-650 3.2 ghz) with MameUI 0.143U9. Graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 5570.

The only problems I've found is that with Futari Black in God mode the sound gets choppy when things get heavy. It's not to bad on the first level at all, but on the second level it really starts to get worse with the stuttering.

My computer does'nt seem to be struggling when I look at the performace monitor at all.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? :(

Many Thanks

Sound stuttering is always a sign of the emulation dropping below 100% , your pc is definitely struggling at those points.

Have you tried this? It's XP but I would imaging 7 has something similar.

I tried this and it did'nt help any giving it real time priority. I tested a ton of different settings, and I could see the CPU meter spike up more but I still got the stuttering.

Since I'm using direct3D would a better graphics card help, or am I just at the limits of what my i5 processor can do with God Mode going nuts?

the 5570 is holding you back for sure. you could try overclocking it if you want but the most you could squeeze out is probably about a 10% performance gain under a heavy overclock.

if you're an ati fan I would recommend atleast a 6770 which can be found for around 120$ usd currently. it uses a little more power but you get well over double the performance of the 5570

CPU meters often show wrong info about modern multi-core CPU's load.
for example - if I run some hard single threaded program (i.e. it uses only one core but at 100%), in taskmanager I see that all four cores in my Core i5 is loaded at ~25%, which is not true.
in the case of MAME can be the same thing, one of cores can be loaded at 100%, your's CPU-meter just not show this.

For sure? Since when is MAME putting any significant pressure on graphics card?

Have you tried this (unofficial) Version?

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 81#p734781

It worked wonders for me... Just lovely, pure awesomesauce...

Just put it in your current mame-folder and start the "slowpoke" mame.exe instead of the normal one (it uses all your settings from the normal build, if you do it like that) and enjoy the games... ;-)

+1

My desktop has 2x1.88 ghz and a nvidia 9600gt and SH3 runs at 70~90%.
Laptop has 2x3ghz and integrated intel graphics ( ) and it runs perfectly.

Still using my 360 though.

Pretty much. Well perfectly is of course wrong. But it runs at 100% most of the time. The only exceptions being when there are assloads of gems on screen which all use blending. Then it drops to something like 70% or so and snaps back up pretty fast.

And also not perfectly because it runs way too fast compared to the PCB or port because of no hardware slowdown being figured in.

Did a B score run last night starting to get back upto speed and as ive only ever played the ps2 port the constant full speed feels the same although itl be nice when the pcb slowdown is incorporated.I am a massive yagawa fan but muchi pork is so shit thoroughly disappointing definitely his worst game .

The slowpoke edition worked for futari god mode. Instead of the stuttering now it just slows down.

Thanks for this!

Thanks folks. Pink Sweets/Muchi stutter a bit but it's ESPGaluda 2 I really wanted since my 360 died, runs great on u9. Futari is being an arse but I'm not missing it much anyway.

It is emulated..... it's working with mame...... the only problems is the ennemy bullets are invisible because of the undumpable protection rom.

Same for Demon Front and The Gladiator.

Anyway to get autofire using the slowpoke MAME? I'd love to play Pink Sweets and Mushi for real. Is it possible to compile a MAME that has that option?

For real? Since when using a cheat button is playing for real ?

Nope, Metallic won't release the source code for the "slowpoke edition" of MAME as stated earlier in the thread. I thought the games all had autofire but anyway....

I thought this actually deteriorated after a few release and you can't even get to in-game now, or so I heard.

Not really missing out from what I've heard but it'd be good to have the title documented and working, even if only to demonstrate why it's considered the banished illegitimate relative of the Dodonpachi series.

Oh good, I've been looking for a chance to link to this post (in this same thread, no less) with information on how even the japanese players use autofire, in arcades no less.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
