Oddball feats/sh*t you do in a shmup
Buzzing bullets to the point of stupidity, when I lack the necessary skills to do so. And I'm a noisy fucker, I quiet often squeal like a teenage girl when there's a particularly nasty bullet pattern heading my way. It sounds so ridiculous that even my girlfriend's 8 year old daughter and 14 year old sister laugh at me for it.
I think this has been brought up before but it is fun as hell.
I tried playing Gradius V on DDR pads. Beleve me, it is a ball, except for the fact that our pads are worn out and controol is a nightmare. LOL
Also I got bored playing with my sister on that game and we decided to do this. See who can kill the boss by ramming the core. Beleve me you can!!

in ikaruga and ketsui, when the game forces the ship to a spot on screen (ikaruga cut scenes, ketsuis end of levels), i move the ship into place myself before the game takes over. ketsuis spot is a little above the right edge of the 3rd bomb box (1p), margin of error there is a few pixels.
otherwise i just try circling bullets. when i played strikers 1999 a lot in the arcades i always tried right before bosses when theres a lone enemy firing off a last shot. i could never do it. in dangun i do it constantly cause i use uo-poko, pretty easy to do.

I do that one as wellFatCobra wrote:I do the figure 8 dance as well. Maybe that's what I meant by circle dance.zinger wrote:I do this too. I also like to move my ship in the shape of an eight.FatCobra wrote:And when I do play with options, I like to keep moving the Vic Viper around and watching them dance and make patterns.
Also, I like do to the circle dance, where you move the stick or pad in a circle and watch the craft move from side to side.

The E-lazer in GV is especally fun with bosses. After killing a boss, I like to bunch up the options onto my Viper, and shoot a full charge, timed to hit when the boss explodes. The blast turns blends into the fire, making for some pretty purple! Plus, it looks like you completely destroyed the vessel.
Lastly, I spread out the options on the far-left, and shoot another full charge, and watch the empty screen COMPLETELY fill with blue!

Well you see I have a TV permenite set into rotated position for playing game in Tate mode.
But recently, I found myself play horizontal shumps on it, And I am now seriously considering building a custom joystick with rotated controls for this purpose...

*Meow* I am as serious as a cat could possible be. *Meow*
Raiden DX does that. The closer you are to the correct position, the higher the bonus, up to 10,000pts.zaphod wrote:some games actually give you a bonus for positioning the ship right at the position it gets moved to at end of level before the game does it.
Not really worth it when you consider the bonuses you get in-game, but if you're going for a perfect score - or want to show off - then it's a fun little trick to do.

I do that too. I also try to switch to black polarity (in IKA) when doing it so the silhouette comes out better.Acid King wrote:After killing bosses in Ikaruga and Psyvariar 2 I position my ship in the middle of the boss explosion so that the ship is engulfed and it looks like the ship is spawning from the center of it as the explosion dies.
When I'm playing Parsec47, I listen to fast-paced music and try to time my movements to match the beat of the music. (Sometimes it works. Sometimes I just get killed really quick.)
Also, on the first boss of Ikaruga, I like to try and dash straight between the homing missiles while maintaining black polarity just as I effect the kill. Partly to shave about a half-second off my boss time, partly because it looks cool. (Usually it gets me killed, though. X( )
Gameshark codes and Pro Action Replay codes bring new life into old shmups.
Try Ikaruga's "Max Release Energy" code, and see how many chains you can score with the Energy Release at Max without Firing a Single Shot.
I'll tell you right now, it's ENTIRELY POSSIBLE in Chapter 5. I managed to get all 122 Chains.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.
