Nah, the original trilogy is still really fun to watch. I've done so recently. ROTJ is where Lucas was starting to shove his influence around a little too much (Ewoks!) but it's still not a bad movie by any stretch.Skykid wrote:Nicely put, and totally agreed.sven666 wrote: star wars for me is just like the C64 and amiga, fond childhood memories with stardust sprinkles best left untouched.
I think it remains very naive to credit a film to a single person, yet perhaps this is the worst insult regarding the prequels, since they were over-controlled by Lucas. The late 70's and early 80's films are so good no doubt because there were a lot of talented folks working at that time, and Lucas was wise enough (at least for ANH and ESB) to let them do what they did best.Mischief Maker wrote: The main difference between the Originals and the Prequels? I'd like to believe that isn't true, especially given how many people are groaning over remakes, but wagering on stupidity is always a good call. Never looked at the star trek blu-rays that have all-new special effects.neorichieb1971 wrote:But I guarantee everyone would be shouting "If SW was made today it would look a lot better"

My girlfriend loves the original trilogy - they are her favourite movies, her R2-D2 scream is spot on. She won't watch the special editions because like anyone with any sense she thinks they're garbage.CMoon wrote:

Eh, I thought Sven was just generalising on the entire original trilogy. As in, it's a wonderful nostalgic thing that doesn't need messing with.Udderdude wrote:Nah, the original trilogy is still really fun to watch. I've done so recently. You really should watch the Red Letter Media reviews to get an idea of just how terrible they are. They open new doors of terrible that I had never even considered, and I already hated the damn things. :PObiwanshinobi wrote:If Phantom Menace was without midichlorians and tacky computer animations, I wouldn't speak ill of it at all. Hardware design is still absolutely top-notch, Darth Maul is a canon dude and the lightsaber duel is canon as well. I like the decadent glamour of the Old Republic as depicted in prequels.
Attack of the Clones had chavvy Anakin and that, I think, turned me off most. Still haven't watched the Revenge...
I'm with Obiwanshinobi. I read the book, and aside from the midichlorians and the virgin birth (seemed to be trying to fit in too many myths and legends with that one), the plot isn't all that bad. A conniving senator manipulates some greedy corporate thugs to beseige his homeworld, manipulating his queen to initiate a vote for a new supreme chancellor, thus ensuring that he gets the sympathy vote and putting himself in charge of the galactic government. The Jar Jar antics weren't too bad, although they go overboard a bit and the "exqueeze me" line was terrible. I was expecting a "baking powder?" followup after hearing that. Those accusing Jar Jar of being a negative racial sterotype seemed to have overlooked the fact that he was played by a black guy. They could have kept the character but not made him quite so cartoony. I liked the concept of a slave boy winning a chariot race in order to save the queen. The underwater city was beautiful as well as the alien technology it contained. Coruscant was beautiful, and I remember reading the Han Solo books as a kid and how it described an endless flow of starship traffic and I could hardly envision it. Seeing it on the big screen was cool. The Yoda puppet was terrible in TPM, so redoing that for the Blu Ray is an improvement for sure. The movies had some decent actors, and the acting could have been better if 1. it wasn't directed by Lucas, and 2. if they had actually built sets so that they weren't standing in front of green screens constantly.Obiwanshinobi wrote:If Phantom Menace was without midichlorians and tacky computer animations, I wouldn't speak ill of it at all.

I know this was before Lucas officially sucked, but wow -- wonder what that would have turned out like? One of the best movies of all time directed by one of those worst directors of all time.Francis [Ford Coppola] … had bought the ["Apocalypse Now"] rights so George could make it. He eventually got tired of waiting and did it on his own, of course.”

And this improves things, how? The fact that Bojangles was black doesn't make Shirley Temple movies any less racist. JarJar remains more racist than a minstrel show. Moreover, virtually every alien in the prequels is based on pure racial stereotype. The jewish junkyard owner, the japanese trade federation people, the italian restaurant owner (though to lucas's credit, he mitigates this somewhat with a pirate voicegreg wrote:Those accusing Jar Jar of being a negative racial sterotype seemed to have overlooked the fact that he was played by a black guy.
Unfamiliar with the reference. But I'd guess the difference is between something *about* racism, vs. something that *employs* racism. It can be a very fine distinction and there are borderline cases. GTA:SA treated the topic of black west coast gang wars. Now, you could certainly argue that it exploited that topic, but it'd be a very difficult argument.Obiwanshinobi wrote:How come GTA:SA wasn't racist, but when Total Overdose came out, suddenly enough was enough?
