Shmup with most moving objects on screen at once?
I thought about this last night, and tried to remember through all the shmups I've played: Which one is the busiest in terms of bullets/medals/enemies on screen, in motion, at any one time?
For me I always thought it could have been Giga Wing 2, but it's been a while since I played it. And more recently DeathSmiles 2 has shitloads going on as well...
Suggestions?

Hard to define a "moving object" I'm afraid. Say, those explosion rings in Super Aleste, Battle Garegga etc. are made of multiple sprites, but fixed upon backgrounds rather than moving independently the way bullets move. Nonetheless, they create an illusion of circular movement and you perceive them as moving objects. Then there's shrapnel effect in Raiden, Garegga and the likes. Smoke in Flying Shark. All those things you don't take into account as objects to either pick up or avoid, but they certainly take some computing power to be displayed in motion.
I think Ibara would be up there.

A motion object, so anything like a sprite moving independently of the background tiles, but yeah I see your point with shrapnel in Raiden, Ibara etc. These look like they create a bunch of little moving bits, but the debris is probably all just the one animation! Maybe I should change the thread title to 'Shmup with busiest display' or something...Obiwanshinobi wrote:Hard to define a "moving object" I'm afraid. This question is meaningless until the TC defines it more clearly.
Sprite count? Definitely one of the later SH3 Cave games.
Animation fluidity and detail? Raiden DX is a possibility.

You mean from a technical perspective the SH3 board can render more moving sprites than say, Naomi?Estebang wrote:This question is meaningless until the TC defines it more clearly.

I think i wanted to keep it a little less technical otherwise we start splitting hairs like polygons/ sprites etc.
I guess the game that the brain perceives to be the busiest in terms of stuff to be processed I suppose (by your brain, not the CPU).

Going by that definition the answer would probably be Futari BL God as there are many points in big scoring spots where the hardware can't even display all the sprites and has to remove certain elements like the player's character.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Hard to define a "moving object" I'm afraid. Going by sheer bullet count I'd say this craziness

Borderliner, but Bangai-O HD would be a definite contender. It's enough to give the 360 slowdown at times.

I recall Crimson Clover demo being a confetti bukkake in 640x480.
Don't know whether slowdown in Bangai-O HD is artificial or caused by hardware limitations, but that game's native resolution is higher than in most coin-op shmups and doujins, which doesn't necessarily make it look busier, but certainly does require more horsepower.

DFK BL is way worse in this regard.Gus wrote:Going by that definition the answer would probably be Futari BL God as there are many points in big scoring spots where the hardware can't even display all the sprites and has to remove certain elements like the player's character.

there are few moments in the new akai katana DVD where in the arcade+ mode (i dont know what its actually called) sometimes even the xbox360 chugs along and sprites flicker.. thats gotta be way up there no?

Pesonally, I find Garegga and Ibara to be very visually 'dense' and difficult to play because of it.
Guwange can have a ton of stuff going on very frequently as well.

I think the prize actually goes for Diadra Empty, especially for pulling it off at 1024x768 and eating computers for breakfast. IIRC, above the fps counter you had the total sprite count of the map, which is technically 3-screens big.

(clickable thumbnail)
Extra Level Chapter 5 probably has the greatest object count around with a boss casting not only bullets but an entire army of enemies and mid-bosses along. Playing this game on a 40" display is a sight to behold.

NOW REACHES THE FATAL ATTRACTION BE DESCRIBED AS "HELLSINKER". DECIDE DESTINATION.

That's definitely a lot of stuff, but the thread title specifically says "On screen", not "Off screen in different parts of the map"

YGS2000 has a bullet count on the side of the HUD. Not sure how accurate the levels are to the originals but some have 2000+ bullets on screen at any one time.

Yeah, that's when you set the level to 99 and it becomes impossible.
Also, since you don't actually shoot in YGS2000, it's not really a shmup. More like .. dodge-em-up.
DISQUALIFIED >:O
