Shmup stinkers
Re: Shmup stinkers
To be honest, most PCE shmups are not worth one's time, at least on default difficulty settings.

And Axelay is far from being the best shmup on the system. It's only an average game regardless of its genre. R-Type III and Macross are both superior Snes efforts, and even Pop n' Twinbee too.
Oh, and Gradius III if you enjoy the feeling of being repeatedly raped.

You must be thinking of the arcade version cos the SNES version is easy to loop.Skykid wrote:Oh, and Gradius III if you enjoy the feeling of being repeatedly raped.
Re: Shmup stinkers
I can agree on any of the others as contenders for best shooter on the SNES, but Pop n twin bee? boooooring........
Re: Shmup stinkers
A little, but not as dull as Axelay. Neither qualify as stinkers though, if that helps any.Kollision wrote:I can agree on any of the others as contenders for best shooter on the SNES, but Pop n twin bee? boooooring........

I have never beaten any Gradius game. I'm still looking for a wise Tibetan monk to teach me the ways of mastering Gradius.
I can't 1cc Thunder Force III either (though I can at least beat it), which I've heard makes me an unskilled player who might as well quit shmupping.
... I never believed in quitting though!

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Check out the 1-sissy for Gradius Rebirth. Won't make you a Jedi, but I found it pretty helpful.Edmond Dantes wrote:I have never beaten any Gradius game. I'm still looking for a wise Tibetan monk to teach me the ways of mastering Gradius.

Cotton 100% is too easy and repetitive. The "Tea Time" transitional minigame is neat, but its random element completely kills scoring, and would be more at home in a Warioware.
Re: Shmup stinkers
If I had to criticize MUSHA for something it would have to be all those popcorn enemies constantly trying to snipe my ass.

That's probably more due to the dodgy hit detection than the actual difficulty of the port.Skykid wrote:I still get raped by it.Paradigm wrote:You must be thinking of the arcade version cos the SNES version is easy to loop.Skykid wrote:Oh, and Gradius III if you enjoy the feeling of being repeatedly raped.

Lol, pop'n twinbee better than axelay? I think axelay is excellent. Not the most challenging game ever, but great presentation, music, and weapons.

Don't put words in my mouth (that's happening a lot recently), I only said "not as dull."dunpeal2064 wrote:Lol, pop'n twinbee better than axelay? I think axelay is excellent. Not the most challenging game ever, but great presentation, music, and weapons.

Pop n' is pretty fruity but a bit long winded, Axelay is impressive for about a minute until you realise the 3D stages have a sucky depth perpective and the weapons are wank.
The hori sections are really nice though.

Re: Shmup stinkers
I'll agree that the vert levels have a funky perspective. I liked the weapons though.
I dunno, not the best on the system, but not stinker material in my book.
I just misread that, since the other 2 games you posted were great, I thought maybe you were putting twinbee on their level.
RSG a stinker though? Thats just silly.

Re: Shmup stinkers
People love to rag on RSG because it's held in high regard, is ridiculously tough and doesn't conform to the same conventions that a bazillion other shmups do. There's no point in ragging on a game for attempting to do something fresh (and that also happens to be mindbogglingly spectacular.)dunpeal2064 wrote: RSG a stinker though? Thats just silly.
If you want a plain old STG there's hardly a shortage, leave Silvergun alone.

Adding Eco Fighters (Capcom). Default controls (two rotate buttons) are horrible. Using an analog stick (PS2) for 360 degree firing control makes things slightly better. This is supposed to be able to be done in one credit? But all the weapons are too slow and too weak!

Did Capcom ever make a good shmup, besides the NES version of 1943?

Re: Shmup stinkers
It's quite an unusual one, but I'm not sure it qualifies as a stinker. We're talking games that are wretchedly boring and dull or outright broken.toaplan_shmupfan wrote:Adding Eco Fighters (Capcom). Eco Fighters is great. I hope opening a score board for it will motivate more people to play it sometime.

Incidentally, I cannot beat the 2nd level of Eco Fighters

Re: Shmup stinkers
Yeah, if only all the stages had been horizontal! The round vulcan is a really cool weapon (is there another shooter with anything like it?) but the weapon choices are unbalanced.Skykid wrote:Axelay is impressive for about a minute until you realise the 3D stages have a sucky depth perpective and the weapons are wank.

As is, I still think it might be my favorite on SNES. R-Type III often has better design but a truly terrible stage 4 that I find hard to forgive.
